Wells and Goodwin punish Yorkshire

Luke Wells and Murray Goodwin both made centuries as Yorkshire’s decision to put Sussex in badly backfired

29-May-2011
ScorecardLuke Wells and Murray Goodwin both made centuries as Yorkshire’s decision to put Sussex in on the first day of their County Championship tussle at Hove badly backfired. Wells enhanced his reputation as one of the best young batsmen in the country with his third hundred in only his eighth Championship game, while Goodwin scored his second century of the season as Sussex closed on 295 for 2.Yorkshire skipper Andrew Gale probably felt a pitch with an even covering of grass would assist his seam attack and Ajmal Shahzad, who is one of the contenders to replace James Anderson in the England squad for the Lord’s Test, did take the scalp of the in-form Chris Nash in the ninth over with one which nipped back.Wells was only opening because Nash’s regular partner Ed Joyce is playing for Ireland. Joyce is due back in time for the third day and his nominated substitute, Joe Gatting, struggled to take his chance.Gatting failed to score off 40 of the 44 balls he faced before he drove loosely at Steven Patterson and was well caught by the diving Joe Sayers at cover. But that was as good as it got for Yorkshire.Wells, briefly becalmed before lunch, reached his 50 with a cover-driven boundary off Patterson and during the afternoon session he and Goodwin made serene progress. Wells had one alarm on 79 when he was knocked off his feet by Ryan Sidebottom’s yorker but umpire Richard Kettleborough adjudged the ball was sliding down the leg side. The 20-year-old left-hander reached his century off 198 balls with successive boundaries when leg-spinner Adil Rashid obligingly dropped short and added seven more boundaries after that. He will resume on 143, having so far faced 286 balls and hit 23 fours.Goodwin lost little in comparison to his partner although he did have one alarm on 49 when he edged between the two slips off Patterson. Otherwise Sussex’s vice-captain looked in total control, feasting when he bowlers dropped short to play his favourite back-foot shots. He reached his 46th hundred for the county, in 217 balls, with his 13th boundary in the final over of the day and so far the third-wicket pair have added 217 in 71 overs.Sussex are giving Championship debutants to two South Africans. Left-armer Wayne Parnell only arrived at 6.30am on an overnight flight from Johannesburg to replace Pakistan’s Rana Naved as overseas player, while all-rounder Kirk Wernars, who qualifies because of his Dutch passport, was also included.

Malik and Naved appeals adjourned

The appeals lodged by former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan against their one-year bans by the Pakistan Cricket Board have been adjourned to a later date

Cricinfo staff22-May-2010The appeals lodged by former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan against their one-year bans by the Pakistan Cricket Board have been adjourned to a later date. The one-man tribunal, chaired by Irfan Qadir, announced that Malik’s hearing will now take place on May 29, while Naved’s is scheduled for June 19.”Malik’s lawyer completed his arguments and the lawyer for the Pakistan Cricket Board wanted time for some legal matters so the appeal has been adjourned for May 29,” Qadir told . He added that Naved’s appeal was adjourned until June 19 after his lawyer filed two more appeals and wanted to know constitutional points about the inquiry.Seven Pakistan players were penalised, for various reasons, by the PCB in the aftermath of a winless tour of Australia. Younis and Mohammad Yousuf, who has retired from international cricket, were banned indefinitely. Malik and Naved were banned for a year while the Akmal brothers and Shahid Afridi were fined and placed on a six-month probation. Each of the players, with the exception of Yousuf, have appealed against the punishments. Younis and Yousuf were accused of “infighting” and having a “negative influence” on the team.Younis’ appeal has been adjourned to Saturday May 29. Pakistan cricket is already under crisis with revelations of the infighting and discord within the team, after a video of the PCB’s inquiry committee was leaked to a television channel. Qadir said the hearings with the players were also being recorded in the interest of the players and PCB.”In my personal opinion the proceedings should be open but on the request of players and the PCB we have not made it open,” Qadir said. “For transparency we are keeping video recordings of the proceedings.”

Australian export Brownlie thriving for New Zealand

Dean Brownlie spent the first 25 years of his life in Australia. Now he is trying to thwart them in Test cricket.

Brydon Coverdale06-Dec-2011The pavlova last year, Dean Brownlie this year – Western Australia’s finest have been ripe for the poaching by New Zealand recently. Then again, from Russell Crowe to Keith Urban, from Ruth Park to Rebecca Gibney, Australians have been claiming New Zealand’s best as their own for decades. It’s about time a few went the other way.Brownlie might have missed the news stories last December when the Oxford English Dictionary determined that pavlova was a New Zealand invention and was not, as Australians had asserted, created at Perth’s Esplanade Hotel in 1935. If he hadn’t caught up with those reports it would be understandable. This time last year, Brownlie was just settling in to his second season with Canterbury. He had lived in Perth for the first 25 years of his life, his primary connection with New Zealand the fact that his father was born in Christchurch. Now, he is not only playing Test cricket against Australia, but thriving: in the first Test he was New Zealand’s leading scorer, with a fighting 77 not out in the first innings and 42 in the second. It was the kind of performance that made onlookers wonder how Brownlie had spent so long in Perth club cricket without earning a place in Western Australia’s side. He played some junior cricket with Shaun Marsh, but by his own admission wasn’t seriously in the reckoning for a state call-up.”I don’t think I was that close,” Brownlie told reporters in Brisbane, before the team flew to Hobart for the second Test. “I was scoring a few runs, but given the quality of players in WA, probably didn’t score enough runs to demand a spot. It was more a cricketing decision [to move to New Zealand]. I just wanted to give it a go and see what happened. If I got a first-class game – awesome.”Brownlie’s efforts in the Gabba Test certainly left more of a mark on Michael Hussey than any grade performances in Perth over the past few years. Hussey said he didn’t remember playing club cricket against Brownlie, but he was impressed by his work in Brisbane.”I thought he played very well,” Hussey said. “He showed great temperament, against some pretty hostile bowling there for a while, coming in for the second innings in particular when the team was under extreme pressure, I thought he applied himself really well. It is a shame we couldn’t keep him in Australia … but I thought he played really well, showed a great temperament and a good, solid technique as well.”Brownlie, 27, has now scored two half-centuries from his two Tests and appears to be one of the most stable parts of a faltering batting order. He hopes he can continue to thwart the Australians, his countrymen for most of his life, when the second Test starts at Bellerive on Friday.”Two years ago I was playing club cricket in Christchurch. I never thought I’d be at the Gabba playing a Test match. It was awesome,” he said. “I haven’t really had too much to do with them [the Australian team], so it wasn’t really a change of scenery. It was an awesome experience.”And it was one that wouldn’t have come without gambling on a trip across the ditch.

Donald praises Zimbabwe seam attack

Allan Donald, the South Africa bowling coach, has praised Zimbabwe’s attack, saying that their performance in the one-off Test against Bangladesh is a testament to the “hard work and time the guys behind the scenes are putting in.”It’s a really good attack and definitely gives them something to work with,” Donald told ESPNcricinfo. Donald coached Zimbabwean franchise, the Mountaineers, last season and was recently in the country with the South Africa A side when they participated in a triangular series also featuring Australia A.Donald made special mention of the new-ball pair of Brian Vitori and Kyle Jarvis, both of whom impressed in taking five wickets each in the Test. Donald had seen both of them when he was in Zimbabwe and said he spotted their talent early on.”I saw Brian when we played the Southern Rocks, he was playing for their second team and I saw him warming up one morning by himself and wondered why he wasn’t in the first side. He had such good discipline.” Vitori appears to be the most competent left-arm bowler to play for Zimbabwe since Bryan Strang, who last played a decade ago, and his unique angle brought immediate results.Together with Jarvis, Vitori formed a promising partnership, with his swing and Jarvis’ pace the key elements of their pairing. “I am so happy for Kyle, especially because he had such trouble with his back last year,” Donald said, referring to Jarvis’ stress fracture, which kept him out of the game for several months and is said to have cost him a yard or two in pace. “All he did was hang around the grounds and try and learn.”With two such determined characters taking the new ball for Zimbabwe, Donald thinks they may have found the ideal combination, after having been through a fair number of seamers recently. That list includes Shingirai Masakadza, younger brother of Hamilton, who Donald thinks will come back strongly after being dropped for this series, although he was part of Zimbabwe’s World Cup squad. “He gets some serious gas, he’s up there at about 138 or 140 [kph] and is a very good athlete,” Donald said. With the number of young quicks coming through the franchise system, the likes of Chris Mpofu and Elton Chigumbura will have to “improve” significantly to keep pushing for their places, even in the 50-over format. “You need two good guys who will have pace and can knock people over,” Donald said, indicating that he felt Vitori and Jarvis should keep their spots for the five-match ODI series against Bangladesh.”As they saw in the Test match, with Bangladesh, you pick up one or two and that can become three, four and five. They play loose shots although some days they can play serious cricket and beat you all ends up.”

Bishoo puts Windes ahead on bowlers' day

Legspinner Devendra Bishoo added to his burgeoning reputation with a probing debut spell that befuddled Pakistan’s batsmen on the second day in Providence and gave West Indies a handy, and unexpected, lead

Thirteen wickets went down on an action-packed second day at Providence which ended with West Indies ahead on a crumbling track. Legspinner Devendra Bishoo added to his burgeoning reputation with a probing debut spell that befuddled Pakistan’s batsmen, giving West Indies a handy, and unexpected, first-innings lead.If anyone was wondering whether the testing track had eased up since the first day, the answer was provided as early as the second over of the morning, when Saeed Ajmal’s delivery barely reached ankle height, fizzing through the wicketkeeper’s legs. That set the tone for a frenetic day when spin and bounce conspired to make life difficult for batsmen.Pakistan were a happy side at lunch, having wrapped up the West Indies innings for 226, before creeping to 45 for 1 with some safety-first batting. Bishoo, though, showed what a threat he was going to be right after the break by getting his second ball to spit off the pitch and fly off Azhar Ali’s edge past slip. In his next over, he got one to zip through low and Ali couldn’t get close to it as he thought of a cut.It was the more amiable bowling of Darren Sammy, though, that got the breakthrough, ending the dogged 52-run stand between Taufeeq and Ali. Sammy was getting the ball to dip in on occasion, but the wicket came off a delivery that went straight on; Taufeeq played around it and was struck in front of middle and leg. That ended Pakistan’s largest partnership and signalled the start of the slump.Misbah-ul-Haq survived a lbw call on 0 off an indipper from Sammy, but two overs later he became Bishoo’s first Test victim. Bishoo slipped in a straighter one, which Misbah looked to play off the back foot – he missed and was so plumb that he contemplated walking off even before the umpire raised the finger. In the next over, Ali inexplicably left a delivery from Sammy that ducked in sharply from outside off, and was mortified to see it take off stump. The two wickets will provide the under-fire Sammy some respite from his many critics.Asad Shafiq, another promising youngster from Pakistan, also didn’t last long, trapped on the back foot by a flat legbreak from Bishoo, who got the lbw decision after referring it to the third umpire. 57 for 1 had become 66 for 5.Pakistan’s hopes of getting close to West Indies’ score now depended on Umar Akmal, who began with a confident punch through cover for four. He had an entertaining battle with Bishoo, highlighted by the 32nd over. Even with the wickets tumbling, Akmal didn’t shelve his strokes, shuffling down the track and thumping over long-on for four, and backing that up with a powerful cut past point for another boundary. An unfazed Bishoo responded by sliding in a quicker legbreak that easily beat Akmal.Bishoo, bowling accurately with five fielders lying in wait for the edge, soon got his third wicket, with Mohammad Salman using up another referral after being adjudged lbw. Bishoo continued to produce the odd unplayable ball – combining turn and bounce to baffle the batsmen – but Abdur Rehman and Akmal survived till tea, putting on 33 to take Pakistan to 113 for 6. The final session began with several French cuts from Rehman, interspersed with some forceful hits, and despite the close calls, the pair put on 50 runs. That was when Akmal had his seemingly mandatory brainfade. Looking to swipe a short ball, he top-egded it high and only as far as the wicketkeeper. Rehman picked up a few more boundaries to finish as the top-scorer, though the Pakistan tail couldn’t put up the sort of fight West Indies’ had. The home side’s last-wicket pair battled gamely for eight overs on the morning, before Ajmal induced the inside-edge that brought him his five-for and best bowling figures in a Test.Bishoo’s control and subtle variations meant West Indies took the first-innings lead despite picking only one specialist spinner in the line-up. They still can’t rest easy though, as they have already lost two early wickets. Devon Smith confirmed he is Mohammad Hafeez’s bunny by being trapped lbw – the sixth successive innings that he has been dismissed by Hafeez – and Darren Bravo was caught on the crease by a straighter one from Ajmal. There is still the small matter of negotiating the dreaded Ajmal doosra, which none of the West Indies batsmen pick consistently. After all the controversy over the past month, tomorrow will be the day for Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan to prove the worth of all that experience.

Murali will play even with discomfort – Bayliss

Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss insists Muttiah Muralitharan will play in the World Cup final despite continued worries over his fitness. Muralitharan, who turns 39 next month, skipped practice on Thursday at the Wankhede stadium and has struggled with niggles through the course of the tournament, including a hamstring injury, a side strain, a troublesome knee and a groin issue. There was speculation that he would be rested for the semi-final against New Zealand in a bid to allow him time to be fully fit for the final, but he played despite not being in the best physical condition. The final will be Muralitharan’s last international game. “Chances are good that Murali will play,” said Bayliss. “He completed 10 overs in the semi-final, and such is the character of the man that he will play even with discomfort.”The fitness of allrounder Angelo Mathews is also a worry for Sri Lanka. Veteran seamer Chaminda Vaas and offspinner Suraj Randiv are being flown in as cover for the injured pair, but Bayliss confirmed Sri Lanka had not applied to the ICC to have them included as official replacements. “We have asked for them just to be on the safe side, but Muralitharan and Mathews will be given as long as possible to prove their fitness,” he said.Muttiah Muralitharan will play through the pain barrier in order to finish his international career with a World Cup final•Getty Images

Bayliss was bullish about Sri Lanka’s chances of winning a second World Cup title after their triumph in 1996, and suggested the pressure would be on India as the home team and tournament favourites. “We have played good cricket through the tournament and have done well against India in the past,” he said. “The pressure will be on India since they are playing at home, but we are familiar with the conditions in Mumbai.”If we concentrate on what we do the best then we can play some good cricket and if we play good cricket, we are going to be very difficult to beat. This match is 50-50 at this stage. Obviously, there will be a lot of pressure on India to perform at home. We have been able to do that in the last couple of games and come out with two good wins. The boys are quite confident about their chances in this World Cup.”Yes, we have played India on a number of occasions and have beaten them before on a lot of occasions. [But] it [the final] is a difficult assignment. In the last three years, we have played 35 matches and this will be the 36th one. We have beaten them on a number of occasions. Our guys are confident we can play well and win.”
