Jordan Henderson might be an awful lot better than people think

Jordan Henderson is a criminally underrated player at times and his recent performances for England have shown that.

Jordan Henderson celebrated his 50th cap on Monday night when he came on as a substitute in England’s convincing 5-1 victory over Montenegro, and it has got us reflecting on what is surely one of the most underappreciated careers in modern times.

Yes, we can admit that he hardly contributes the most exciting role on the pitch, and fans are all too prepared to remind us of that fact – but when did simplicity become a cause for criticism?

Have we moved that far away from the basics of the beautiful game, the passing, the energy, the tackling and tenacity – the very core principals we were taught as fledgeling players ourselves – that we cannot appreciate the simple arts? We think not. At least we should not have.

Gareth Southgate certainly has not, that is for sure, and we are more inclined to believe him, the man who united England and gave them their best summer in 52 years, over Joe Bloggs from the pub, weekend pundit and purveyor of all things illogical.

The England manager commented on Henderson’s milestone (via Henry Winter’s Twitter page): “he’s such an important player for us, with his winning mentality, he makes other players play well, he’s a leader”

Indeed, it must be nice for Liverpool fans to finally see their man getting some much-deserved plaudits; that long overdue recognition for the role he has performed with such admirable consistency through the years that it is hard not to appreciate him and his unbridled commitment, and discipline, to surely one of football’s most tedious roles.

Now, we want to be careful when we make this comparison – as we are hyper-aware of the huge gulf in class between the two – but you see the likes of Kante being praised no end for the simple roles they perform for their teams – so why are England fans so utterly intent on bashing Henderson?

Are we allergic to praising our domestic rivals?

Liverpool fans, is there English player better than Jordan Henderson at what he does? Let us know in the comments below…

The Verdict: Should Liverpool swoop for Ruben Neves?

[ad_pod ]

According to O Jogo, Liverpool would be interested in signing Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, who has shone in patches during the Molineux outfit’s return season in the Premier League.

But the Portugal international could set them back a staggering £110million according to reports from September and Liverpool already have a wealth of options in central midfield, few of whom – much like Neves – offer a consistent supply of creativity and goals.

So, should Liverpool swoop for Neves at the campaign’s end? Football FanCast’s writers give their verdicts below…

Billy Meyers

“I think Neves is just what Liverpool are missing in the midfield. Admittedly, they have a lot of options already, but the Portuguese midfielder is a general in the middle of the park and a man capable of dictating things from deep. He is also used to hitting long-range passes to speedy attackers at Wolves, so he wouldn’t need much time to adapt at Anfield as Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane would make life easy for him.”

James Beavis

“Liverpool already have a plethora of midfielders who are decent defensively – Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Naby Keita – but don’t offer enough going forward, and Neves hardly breaks that mould. Yes, he is capable of getting up and down the pitch, dictating the play from deep and scoring the odd brilliant goal, but he hasn’t shown that he has that creative brain in the centre that the Reds are crying out for next season. In truth, he’s no better than Wijnaldum. Maybe in another year’s time a move could happen, but he isn’t ready yet.”

Ben Goodwin

“With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming back, Jurgen Klopp now has two options in each of this 3 midfield positions. The “6” can be occupied by Henderson or Fabinho, both of whom can also fill the box-to-box role usually occupied by Wijnaldum or Milner, while Oxwlade-Chamberlain will return to compete with Keita for the most advanced midfield spot. There is simply no room for a big money signing who will expect to play week in week out.”

Jack Saville

“I can’t see why Klopp would be interested in a move for Neves. Liverpool’s squad is stacked with quality options in central midfield and Neves’ influence has diminished as the season has developed. The early season hype was thoroughly justified but he has been overshadowed by the brilliance of Joao Moutinho. That in itself is enough to suggest Neves could damage his career by trying to play his way into an incredibly competitive midfield unit – just look at Keita.”

Huddersfield fans call for Sabiri to be given a chance

[ad_pod ]

Huddersfield Town fans on Twitter have been calling for Abdelhamid Sabiri to be given a chance in the first team amidst rumours that he is ready to leave the club.

The German midfielder told MeinWerder: “I want a fresh start, the Bundesliga is my goal.”

Sabiri hasn’t had the best of times in England making only three appearances for Huddersfield in all competitions so far this season.

He is a Germany Under 21 international who signed for the Yorkshire club from Nuernberg in 2017.

The midfielder has fallen entirely out of favour at the John Smith’s Stadium under Jan Siewert and now aged 22 he obviously feels that it is time to move on for the good of his career.

Sections of the Huddersfield fanbase have called for him to stay, stating that he has potential and citing and the club’s imminent relegation to the Championship as a chance for him to get first-team action.

[ad_pod ]

Sheffield Wednesday fans on Twitter are already up for the Sky Bet Championship trip to Preston North End later in April after a club ticketing update on the match was issued.

The Owls have received a generous allocation of a whopping 5,540 for the clash, which will take place on Saturday 27 April with a 3pm kick-off.

Supporters have been informed of how and when they can buy tickets for the away trip and how much the trip to Lancashire will set them back.

The last game of the month could be key for Wednesday in their push to make the play-off places under Steve Bruce as they currently sit six points off Bristol City in sixth.

One of English football’s lesser known rivalries was reignited on Saturday thanks to an unlikely source. Check out the video above to find out which one…

And fans of the Yorkshire club were absolutely lapping up the update on social media, with comments such as “all over it” and “always a decent away day at Preston” flying around the Twittersphere.

Below is the pick of the supporter reactive tweets to the news…

The two most important things Unai Emery said at today’s Arsenal press conference

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal will look to maintain their place in the Champions League qualification spots on Sunday when they face Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Going into the weekend the fourth-place Gunners are only above London rivals Chelsea on goal difference, with Manchester United two points further back.

The north London outfit’s manager Unai Emery spoke to the press (13:44) prior to the trip to Merseyside, and these are two most important things the Spaniard said.

Granit Xhaka injury update

After scoring against Manchester United and then for his country during the international break, the Switzerland international missed the clash against Newcastle United on Monday through injury.

Judging by Emery’s latest update, it seems unlikely that he will be in the starting XI on Sunday.

The 47-year-old said: “We are waiting on tomorrow’s training, some players – Xhaka, Koscielny – didn’t train with us today. They are working with the physios.”

The fact the man that is becoming more and more of a vital player for Arsenal missed training two days before the match is hardy promising, and others may well need to step up to the plate again at Goodison Park.

Poor away form

The former Sevilla boss was also asked why his team’s results on the road have been nowhere near as good as they have been at home in the Premier League, a fair point considering they have taken 44 points on their own patch compared to 19 on their travels.

Emery said: “We don’t set up differently. In all my career I did the same but not for me, I also watched other teams. Usually every team gets more points at home than away. Every team.

“After is how we can take our best performance and results away. It’s our challenge. The last matches in the Premier League: Huddersfield, Tottenham. We had good performances. Good results.

“The first is we need to feel our moment now, getting better. Above all, being competitive at home. We want to be the same away.”

No explanation perhaps, but it is telling that Emery hints that he almost doesn’t believe in his team to be as good away from home as they are at the Emirates.

That attitude needs to change if Arsenal want to challenge the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title in the coming years.

Stefan Johansen as Samu Saiz’s replacement

Marcelo Bielsa has established himself as a hero at Elland Road this season having taken Leeds from a mid-table side to automatic promotion challengers. Of course, there’s still a long way to go from here on in until the end of the season, but the Whites are certainly on the right track.

Leeds managed to climb above Sheffield United earlier on today by securing a convincing victory over Millwall in front of home support, with Norwich now firmly in their sights.

Although, it looks as if Bielsa has turned his attention towards a possible summer transfer move, as according to Football Insider, Leeds are plotting a swoop to sign Fulham’s Stefan Johansen, who is set to be available on a free.

The Norway international has struggled to adjust to life at the Hawthorns after joining on loan back in the January transfer window. But, that shouldn’t scare the Whites away as he was simply sensational in the Championship with his parent club Fulham as he produced eight goals and eight assists.

Johansen is very different to a normal central midfielder as he operates in more of a playmaker role by making use of his creativity and finishing ability. So, the attack-minded midfielder could be the man to replace Samu Saiz in the summer, as according to a report from El Gol, Valencia are interested in the Spaniard.

Of course, Tyler Roberts has impressed in the No.10 role in recent times at Elland Road, but Johansen would be a great alternative. He also has plenty of experience from his time in England having made over 100 appearances for the Cottagers, so he could be a real asset for Leeds, regardless of whether they secure promotion.

Great achievement: West Brom fans laud youth team despite cup exit

[ad_pod ]It appears West Brom are finally getting back on track and that goes for all levels of the club. After Darren Moore’s sacking there had been plenty of negativity but after three wins from three in the James Shan era the Hawthorns is surrounded by positivity once again. That was evident by the way a host of supporters reacted to the exit of their U18 side from the FA Youth Cup.The Baggies knocked out one of the favourites in Arsenal earlier in the competition but came up short against a Manchester City boasting players who have come through academies at some of Europe’s top sides.Supporters were quick to hail the efforts of the club’s young players with one fan calling for them to be recognised during half time of their next home match. One individual urged whoever the new manager was to play some of the upcoming players in the first team whilst another asked for the best of the bunch to go out on loan next season. Was Darren Moore’s sacking unfair? Tottenham fans want Man United to sign Trippier

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United are eyeing a summer swoop for Tottenham ace Kieran Trippier, and fans of the north London outfit are praying the move happens.

According to The Mirror, United are lining up Trippier as an alternative to Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Red Devils are in need of several reinforcements this summer, including at right back, where Wan-Bissaka’s incredible breakout season surely makes him the number one choice.

The report claims Trippier is of interest too though, due to Crystal Palace’s reluctance to lose their rising star.

Mauricio Pochettino appears to be open to revamping his full back ranks a little bit, with the likes of Ryan Sessegnon linked, so could that overhaul start with offloading Trippier?

Even at 28, his success with England and proven Premier League experience would command a respectable transfer fee, a sum which can of course be reinvested into better, younger players.

Spurs fans are absolutely loving the news, and they’re particularly excited by the prospect of tricking United into signing Trippier to then go an use the funds received to sign United’s first target, Wan-Bissaka.
