Bye Jordan: The 2 Liverpool players who should be skipper ahead of Henderson

Liverpool were able to reclaim top spot in the Premier League following their 0-0 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford over the weekend, though pressure looks like it is starting to take its toll.

The Independent reports in detail Jurgen Klopp and Jordan Henderson’s touchline row following the England midfielder’s initial refusal to shake his manager’s hand after being substituted off.

Klopp, however, remains adamant that whatever pressure Liverpool are currently feeling is a positive kind. “Of course there is pressure. Actually, from my point of view, it is a very positive pressure, but I don’t have to play – I only sit here and say dumb things, so that’s easy,” the Liverpool boss told Sky Sports after the game.

Whatever the case, following their touchline incident, here are two potential replacements for Henderson as Liverpool captain should Klopp ever decide a change is needed.

Virgil van Dijk

There have already been calls from some sections of Liverpool’s support for Virgil van Dijk to be made club captain, and it is not hard to see why.

Van Dijk, who is currently the captain of the Netherlands national team, is a real leader at the back.

The 27-year-old can often be seen marshalling the rest of Liverpool’s defence while instructing goalkeeper Alisson when and where to play it short and when to get rid of the ball.

Ultimately, van Dijk is both the model central defender and leader. The former Southampton man looks destined to one day lead Liverpool as a permanent skipper.

James Milner

Already the vice-captain in the squad, Milner would probably be the natural choice as successor if it ever came to Henderson being stripped of the captaincy.

The 33-year-old has earned his stripes as vice-captain and certainly deserves to be in the conversation for the honour above given all of the experience he has amassed down the years as well as his displays on the pitch.

Milner works extremely hard whenever given the opportunity to play, making no complaints about being used as a makeshift right-back, left-back or wherever Klopp has deployed him.

If van Dijk is the model player when it comes to central defenders, then Milner is the model professional when it comes to all footballers.

By no means should Henderson be removed as Liverpool captain after a small incident such as the one at Old Trafford. But if he is — now or in the future — Liverpool have more than one player ready to come and step in.

Tom Eaves would be a superb addition at Fratton Park

Portsmouth are still doing everything they can to ensure they have the best chance at achieving promotion back into the Championship next season.

Although earning a move up the football league system now seems difficult to do via the automatic spots, the play-offs still offer a chance for Portsmouth to make it back.

It’s been an extremely tough start to 2019 for Pompey and they quickly want to get back to winning ways.

Goals have dried up and for a team that couldn’t stop scoring before the New Year, that will be a concern.

Whether they stay in League One or go up into the Championship, a striker who could offer a tremendous service is Gillingham’s Tom Eaves, a player out of contract this summer.

Eaves, (who is valued at £90k on Transfermarkt) has enjoyed, on a personal note, a brilliant campaign with the Gills this season, notching up goal after goal.

Despite his side being 17th in the table, Tom Eaves has somewhat kept them afloat with 17 goals himself, plus an extra four assists as well.

Portsmouth have clinical strikers of their own but since the turn of the year, that statement may no longer be true. Jamal Lowe has 11 for the season, Ronan Curtis ten, but if Tom Eaves could replicate that form with a move to Portsmouth, that’s an offer they can’t look past.

Especially with Omar Bogle and James Vaughan only at the club until the summer, Tom Eaves gives them the security of not having to worry as much when next season comes around.

With his contract up, Eaves would be free to take his goals elsewhere and whether Portsmouth find themselves in the Championship or League One, they can be confident in the 27-year-old firing on all cylinders.

Balague claims Tottenham star Eriksen could join Real Madrid

[ad_pod ]

According to Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague, new Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane wants to bring Tottenham Hotspur attacker Christian Eriksen to the Bernabeu in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

On Monday, it was announced that Zidane had been reappointed as Madrid head coach, just 10 months after leaving the same role.

It seems likely that Los Blancos will spend big this summer as they look to improve on what has been a turbulent and disappointing 2018-19 campaign.

According to Balague, who posted a video on his official Twitter account, Zidane is keen to bring Eriksen to the Spanish capital in this summer’s transfer window.

The Denmark international will see his current deal with Spurs expire at the end of next season.

The Tottenham fans have recently questioned whether the 27-year-old wants to still be at the club and it is shaping up to be a very interesting summer transfer window.

What would Tottenham be losing?

It would probably be fair to say that Eriksen has not been at his best in recent weeks.

The playmaker has still contributed seven goals and 12 assists in all competitions this season, though, and his overall record for Tottenham is excellent.

Indeed, the Dane has managed 63 goals and 81 assists in 264 appearances for his English club in all competitions since a 2013 switch from Ajax.

It would not be a surprise if the reported interest from Real Madrid had turned his head, with the reigning European champions sure to spend heavily this summer.

Spurs need to be careful that Eriksen’s exit – if it indeed happens – does not start a trend of key players moving on in search of pastures new.

Indeed, teams will be closely monitoring the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, particularly if the north London outfit fail to progress past the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Transfer Flashback: Kenedy

Newcastle United looked to have played a blinder last summer after they re-signed Chelsea’s Kenedy on another loan deal.

The 23-year-old spent the second half of the 2017/18 Premier League campaign at St. James’ Park where he impressed, giving supporters reason to be excited about his swift return to Tyneside.

And fans were not the only ones who were glad to see Kenedy return with Rafael Benitez also unable to contain his delight.

“I’m really pleased to have Kenedy back with us. I’m sure every fan will be happy with this signing,” the Newcastle boss told the club’s official club website. “Hopefully he can keep playing at the same level that he reached with us last season. I wish him all the best for his time here.”

Unfortunately for Benitez and co, though, Kenedy has been unable to live up to all of that expectation.

Having scored just one goal and provided a sole assist in the Premier League this term, the Brazilian has been extremely disappointing and now finds himself far from the starting XI.

At 23, Kenedy still has plenty of time to find some consistency in his game, while he has already shown he is capable of performing in English football’s top flight.

Newcastle, however, no longer looks to be the place where he can achieve that.

Brands must bring Piroe to Goodison Park

Not many Everton fans will be pleased with their side’s recent form and Marco Silva’s team selection has been an issue too, with Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun still receiving minutes.

Of course, it’s obvious that the Toffees need to bring in reinforcements in attacking areas as they’ve struggled to get the best out of a number of attackers in recent times, so the summer transfer window could prove key.

Interestingly, it appears as if the Merseyside club have their eye on an attacker, as according to Calciomercato, Everton are interested in PSV Eindhoven’s Joel Piroe.

Worryingly, Juventus are already in talks with the youngster who is available on a free transfer in the summer, but Marcel Brands could hold the key to a potential deal for Everton as he took up the role of sporting director at the Dutch club prior to his move to the Premier League.

Many fans won’t be aware of Joel Piroe’s qualities but he’s quickly established himself as one of the most promising attackers at the Dutch club, having produced an impressive 12 goals in 25 appearances with the Under-21 side.

Indeed, the 19-year-old could quite easily become a Goodison Park hero if Brands manages to bring him to the Premier League as he has one quality that not many of the Toffees’ current batch of attackers are showing, which is the ability to find the back of the net on a consistent basis. He’s a well-rounded striker who could excite Everton fans as he has the ability to operate on either wing, with the pace and skill to pose a constant threat.

One slight worry is that Marco Silva hasn’t exactly turned to youth in the current campaign, so his chances may be limited for now.

Everton fans, would you like to see Piroe rock up at Goodison Park?

Not the answer: Paulo Dybala would be a terrible fit for Liverpool

[ad_pod ]

Paulo Dybala. A player who is obviously a world-class talent, that much goes without saying.

The Juventus man has forged a career from excelling in the No.10 role, showcasing exquisite dribbling skills and an uncanny eye for goal that has seem him rise from mere obscurity at Palermo to a footballing icon at Juventus.

Recent reports have been linking the Argentina international with a move to Liverpool, who are quite clearly in need of some depth in attack with just Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge available as backup.

Are the media letting Jurgen Klopp off lightly for his lack of silverware? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

However, Jurgen Klopp has his formidable attacking trident of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, a trio which works extremely well and would be foolish to disrupt.

This is where the problem lies. Firstly, as aforesaid, the Reds need depth. But it is somewhat of a catch 22 when looking to sign a player to solve this, as any potential arrival would need to understand that they may not be starting week in, week out.

Another issue is replicating Firmino’s role in this system. Few strikers have the mindset that the Brazilian possesses, as he is a player who always puts the team first and finds himself in areas that a forward should be alien to, all to help the team.

Firmino’s tendency to drop deep – very deep – and drag centre-backs infield with him is vital in helping Mane and Salah score the amount of goals that they do; note that the two Africans have both hit 20 goals in successive seasons, whereas Firmino’s tally is a lot lower as he sacrifices personal statistics for the good of the team.

Would Dybala, or anyone else for that matter, arrive at Anfield and immediately throw themselves and their reputation under the bus so Mane and Salah can score goals? Think of it this way: if Dybala arrived in a big-money deal, and only scored around 10 goals, he would be regarded as a flop even if he was allowing Mane and Salah to hit 20 goals yet again.

Firmino’s role is understood well by the Liverpool fans and by most of those interested in the Premier League, and it is a unique one that helps keep the Reds’ attack finely balanced.

In searching for a back-up option, Klopp should perhaps set his sights a little lower than such a huge, world-renowned name like Dybala, in order not to upset the dynamics of the side.

Adrian Durham finds it "a little odd" when Pablo Hernandez absent from TOTY

[ad_pod ]Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay took to Twitter on Friday to have his say on Pablo Hernandez as he missed out on making football writer Daniel Storey’s Championship Team of the Year having also missed out on the official EFL one earlier this week, and talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham was quick to have his say.

What’s the word, then?

Well, despite scoring 10 goals and providing a further 11 assists in 31 league outings this season, he has been a notable absentee from a number of XIs documenting the best players in the division this term, including Storey’s latest effort.

Hay highlighted this particular decision via his official Twitter account and said that he was surprised that the Spaniard appears to continually be overlooked by different individuals, and Durham was quick to reply and agree with him, stating that he also found it “a little odd”.

Are they right?

They certainly are.

The stats speak for themselves and given the Whites have been challenging at the top end of the Championship table throughout the entire campaign, it is hard to fathom why Hernandez isn’t present in these chosen sides.

One of his main issues is that he is considered a midfielder and some teams will prefer to pick three strikers, which of course limits his opportunities when he is up against the likes of teammate Kalvin Phillips, who has been similarly outstanding.

Durham is someone that loves to stir the pot – it’s his job as an employee of talkSPORT of course – but he is absolutely spot on in this instance, omitting the experienced Spaniard is indeed “a little odd”.

Masterstrokes: Two of the smartest Rangers transfers in recent years

Being known as second fiddle to Celtic in Scottish football, it has been a little trickier for Rangers to pull off some truly memorable singings in recent. However, with times constantly changing, it may be time to see just how big Rangers can go if the signs under Steven Gerrard continue to show promise.

With the appointment of Gerrard as manager and the real strides forward that the club have made, there is no doubt that it is an exciting time to be a Gers fan.

Yes, there’s a rebuilding project in place at Ibrox but the recent additions of Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis hint at more ambition behind the scenes. If the Light Blues can continue to add pretty big names, as well as some more astute additions, the famous 55 may be coming home.

With that in mind, here’s a couple of men that have been brought in over the last few years to get them back and challenging at the top:

Scott Arfield

Not having the most illustrious career under his belt, many had wondered just what the 30-year-old will bring to the new Gerrard era at the Ibrox.

However, he has hit the ground running for Rangers, becoming one of the starting names on the matchday squad. Bringing an unexpected turn of pace, and an eye for a pass on goal, the midfielder has proven that he has what it takes to help push them over that line in the coming seasons.

Arfield is yet another free, yes FREE transfer, coming into the Scottish Premiership, proving that Rangers know exactly what they’re doing when it comes down to finding cheap talent.

Martyn Waghorn

Martyn Waghorn is certainly a player that will be remembered at Ibrox. Joining back in 2015 for a fairly substantial fee at the time, there must have been speculation mounting as to whether a Premier League reject could hack it in the depths of the Scottish Championship.

Well, as much as there were speculation, there were goals.

Scoring a total of 28 goals in all competitions in his maiden season, also helping win promotion for Rangers, he truly showed that he was worth every penny.

What could have been if he were still there now?
