Sheffield Wednesday could boost their midfield by signing George Moncur

Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping things get a lot better with the team sat in a miserable 16th position.

In the Championship, a run of results good or bad could leave your team in a very different position and Sheffield Wednesday could soon find out the hard way.

Steve Bruce has inherited a poor, disheartened team that needs re-energising and the best way for that to happen is if the manager looks to spend in the January transfer window.

With improvements possible in almost every position, a player who could do very well at Hillsborough is Barnsley’s George Moncur, seeing as he has the ability to be useful in a number of positions.

Moncur, (who is valued at £675k on Transfermarkt) would be a great addition for Sheffield Wednesday and an option better than many out of their current midfielders.

The 25-year-old can play in the centre, more attacking or even out-wide as a winger. Versatility like that would be very helpful for Steve Bruce given that he has to chop and change his team to exactly how he wishes, knowing still that George Moncur will do a job.

It has again been a very successful time in League One with Barnsley, because in the staggering 27 games he has already featured in this season, the midfielder has five goals and six assists to his name.

They may face a tough battle to fend off interest from teams like Sheffield Wednesday if they came in for him, with his contract up in the summer and a move likely.

In a bid to strengthen their squad, George Moncur would be an excellent addition for Steve Bruce and his team.

Forget Adams: Southampton far smarter to move for one of these two Championship forwards

According to The Mirror, Southampton are likely to bid again for Birmingham’s Che Adams, after having their first £8m bid rejected.

The Saints are clearly set on landing a new striker this month, and the 22-year-old Adams seems to be top of their list. That is no surprise given the fact that the forward has already amassed 14 goals and three assists in 28 Championship games this season.

However, seeing as Birmingham are standing strong at the moment, therefore causing Southampton to pay more, Ralph Hasenhüttl could turn his attention elsewhere. If so, here are two more options in the Championship that Southampton could look at:

Neal Maupay

Sitting in fourth in the Championship’s scoring charts with 16 goals, Brentford’s Neal Maupay is obviously a good option for The Saints. At 22 years of age, this is also a great investment for the south coast club.

However, what makes this such a good signing is that he also has six assists in the Championship so far this season. He has proven that he is also a creative force, which could prove hugely beneficial given the other strikers already at Southampton. If Maupay can work with them, there could be a huge amount of success at St Mary’s this season.

Finally, Maupay’s, and indeed Brentford’s form took a hit when manager Dean Smith left for Aston Villa earlier this season. Had the manager remained, the France under-21 international may have had more goals to his name.

Jarrod Bowen

As far as players go, there isn’t a huge amount that separates Jarrod Bowen from Adams. Both have 14 goals this season, both have three assists and both are 22. Furthermore, Hull and Birmingham are more or less in the same place in the Championship table.

However, what makes Bowen a slightly more attractive proposition is that he only has a year and a half left on his contract, whereas Adams has three and a half years, meaning The Saints may not need to spend as much.

Kurt Zouma set to face suspension as he receives a red card after the final whistle

Everton were beaten by Watford on Saturday afternoon as Marco Silva returned to Vicarage Road, however, things got worse for him after the final whistle.

The Toffees were poor throughout the game and failed to produce anything of quality in the game and to make matters worse, one of their main players was subsequently sent off after the final whistle.

According to a report by Sky Sports, Kurt Zouma was shown two yellow cards after confronting referee Lee Probert.

It is understood the Chelsea loanee was arguing the decision of the official to award Watford the corner from which they scored the winning goal.

The 24-year-old, who was arguably Everton’s best player on the pitch at Vicarage Road, will now be suspended for the game against Cardiff City.

The Verdict:

Zouma’s suspension will come as a huge blow to Silva and Everton as the pressure continues to mount at the Goodison Park outfit.

The defender has been a mainstay in the team this season during his loan spell from Chelsea and has been a key performer for the Merseyside outfit.

It will be hugely disappointing that the Frenchman’s dismissal could have been avoided, however, they will have to make do without him for the Cardiff game and hope he is not further punished – with Liverpool being their following opponents.

Leeds United lacked composure in front of goal against Middlesbrough

Leeds United were probably lucky to get a point from Saturday’s match with Middlesbrough after equalising in the tenth minute of stoppage time for a 1-1 draw.

The outcome of the match could, however, have been much better had the Whites taken all their chances on offer in the second-half.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men dominated possession at the Riverside Stadium and had a number of clear chances to find the back of net before Kalvin Phillips rescued a point deep into added time.

The home-side looked the more threatening of the two teams in the first 45 minutes but after the interval Leeds had more direction which gave them more opportunities to score.

But, poor finishing let the team down and cost them what would’ve been a valuable win at the end of the day.

Manager Marcelo Bielsa made quite a bit change in selection from the team that suffered a heavy 3-1 defeat to Norwich City last weekend, with Patrick Bamford starting as the lone striker and Kemar Roofe moving just behind him in the midfield.

And it was Bamford and Roofe who had the best of chances to scoring but the pair squandered their opportunities with Bamford in particular missing two sitters right in front of goal.

Leeds were also not helped by Jack Clarke who was substituted at half-time after the 18-year-old complained to the manager of feeling unwell.

Clarke had to spend the night in hospital, but fortunately, he was released on Sunday and is now in the process of recovering.

Pablo Hernandez replaced Clarke for the second-half but even he failed to really trouble Middlesbrough keeper Darren Randolph.

Bielsa, however, will not be very happy with the fact that his team had 70% of the possession on the day and had a total of 17 shots on goal with only four of them on target.

Leeds have been clinical in front of goal this season and the manager will be hoping someone like Roofe will soon get back to his good goal-scoring form, which has benefited the team quite tremendously this season. Indeed, it seems like Bielsa’ plan is still working, it’s just the forward players letting him down right now.

Leeds should be looking at Andreas Skov Olsen if they return to the Premier League this season

Leeds fans will still be hopeful of finally earning promotion back to England’s top division in May.

The Whites have enjoyed a fantastic season in Marcelo Bielsa’s debut season in the country but will be pushed all the way in the title race by the excellent Norwich City. The Canaries opened up a lead at the top of the table after beating Leeds last week but there is plenty of football still to be played. Bielsa will welcome a host of players back from injury which could provide his side with the boost they need to push on in the remainder of the campaign.

Should they finally achieve promotion, the former Argentina boss is likely to be backed significantly in the transfer market. Adding quality reinforcements will be key to avoiding a swift return to the Championship. Bielsa should move quickly to identify potential targets that could help his side beat the drop.

One man Leeds should consider signing is Nordsjaelland wonderkid – Andreas Skov Olsen. Valued at just £1.58m by Transfermarkt, the academy graduate has blossomed into a crucial first-team player for the club during the current campaign. The 19-year-old has been one of the world’s most in-form forwards which should make the Leeds scouting team sit up and take notice.

The youngster has netted an incredible 16 goals in all competitions this season as well as registering four assists for his team-mates. Strong on either foot, the winger is extremely quick and blessed with excellent technical ability. The Denmark U21 international would give Bielsa another quality option in the final third as Olsen is capable on the left or the right as well as through the centre.

Still developing and improving – the Dane could become a great under the former Chile boss’ tutelage at Elland Road.

Liverpool fans react to the Champions League draw

It took them until the final matchday to get there, but Liverpool topped their Champions League group to qualify for the next round of the competition.

They did that thanks to a 2-0 win in Austria against RB Salzburg. It was a difficult first-half for the Reds – they faced six shots on target – but Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita got the job done after the interval.

The draw for the round of 16 was conducted on Monday, with four English clubs being pulled out. Chelsea will face Bayern Munich, Tottenham were drawn against RB Leipzig and Manchester City will play Real Madrid. Liverpool, meanwhile, will play Los Merengues’ city rivals Atletico.

Some fans are confident that they can navigate their way through the two fixtures.

In all fairness, they are the current holders of the competition, and are flying at the top of the Premier League. Los Rojiblancos, meanwhile, are fifth in the La Liga table and have scored just 18 goals so far this term. For context, only five sides in the division have netted less.

Other fans, though, are slightly less optimistic, and they believe it could be a difficult couple of fixtures.

They are probably right to be cautious. Even though Atletico are struggling this term, Diego Simeone has made them a tough team to beat over the past few years. Despite not being at their best this season, they have still conceded just 10 goals, the lowest in Spain’s top tier.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

Of course, the Reds will be returning to the Wanda Metropolitano, where they beat Tottenham in the final last year. This has not gone unnoticed by some supporters.

It was written in the stars, wasn’t it? Less than a year after that memorable night, they will be back at the stadium where they triumphed last time out.

It will be interested to see whether they can get the same result this time around.

Newcastle should be looking to sell Dwight Gayle and Ki Sung-Yueng

Newcastle find themselves in a respectable ninth place in the Premier League and who knows where they could end up this season if some reinforcements arrive in January.

Whether Steve Bruce plans to go shopping for Christmas or not remains to be seen but at the other end of the spectrum, there are some names he should definitely be looking to ship off during the winter.

So with that in mind, Football FanCast looks at two players the Magpies would be wise to part ways with in a couple of weeks’ time…

Ki Sung-Yueng

2019/20 has been extremely harsh on the 30-year-old midfielder and it’s not looking likely to change any time soon.

The Korean has fallen behind in the pecking order and Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff have made it almost impossible for him to get a consistent supply of first-team action under his belt.

He’s managed just 136 minutes of game-time and doesn’t appear to have much of a fan in Steve Bruce, so once the January transfer window opens Newcastle may as well sell – especially considering Ki’s contract will expire at the end of the campaign.

Dwight Gayle

The 29-year-old centre-forward managed to bag 24 goals and assist a further eight during his stay with West Brom in 2018/19 but that hasn’t been enough to earn him a key role in Newcastle’s Premier League campaign.

Despite Bruce often talking up the poacher, he’s only handed Gayle 62 minutes after starting the season sidelined through injury.

Newcastle haven’t exactly suffered without him in terms of results and considering Gayle is so well-established at Championship level, Newcastle may be better off cashing in rather than having him sit third or fourth in the pecking order all season.

Transfermarkt value him at £10.8m and that would be a decent addition to the winter kitty if Bruce has signings in mind.

Man Utd fans hail Fred after another impressive midfield masterclass against Burnley

Having arrived from Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk when Jose Mourinho was in charge, Fred endured a difficult first campaign at Manchester United. The Brazil international made just 25 appearances across all competitions, with just 17 of them coming in the Premier League.

And having missed the club’s pre-season tour too due to his wedding, there may have been some eyebrows raised within the United camp about whether he had the dedication and attitude to really cut it at the elite level. But particularly in these last few weeks, the £19.8m-rated man has set about trying to prove why he is deserving of being in the Red Devils’ first-team.

Can you get full marks on the Ultimate Man United Quiz? Test your knowledge below…

This campaign has seen him feature 21 times already, whilst quite significantly, he has played and completed the full 90 minutes in United’s last 13 Premier League games. And against Burnley at the weekend, he was near faultless, winning seven duels, registering a 90% pass accuracy and completing all three of his attempted dribbles. After seeing his performance, fans of the Manchester side flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the midfielder.

A couple of fans hearkened back to the decision to let Ander Herrera go earlier this year, and suggested that Fred is showing that he is more than capable of filling that void.

A few United supporters were also quick to praise Fred’s work ethic and how he has simply knuckled down in trying to get better rather than moaning about his lack of opportunities.

With Scott McTominay out injured for the foreseeable future, it will be up to Fred to really carry the workload in the Scotland international’s absence. And if performance against Burnley is anything to go by, then he is most certainly up to that gruelling task.

Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has raved about this Manchester United starlet after his performance against Burnley.

Liverpool fans react to links with Ousmane Dembele

Ousmane Dembele has failed to fully live up to expectations at Barcelona since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2017.

The France international joined the Blaugrana for £135.5m, but has scored just 19 goals and provided 17 assists in 74 games. Not exactly terrible form, but not what you expect from a player who cost so much, and one that had 29 goal contributions in his one campaign with Die Schwarzgelben.

Now, he could depart the Camp Nou, and it is being reported that Liverpool are the ones interested in his signature. Barca are even prepared to let him leave as long as they receive €100m (£84.9m) for his services.

The Reds supporters, though, do not want him to join their side, it seems.

Their reaction is rather comprehensive. And given the stories that have emerged about him in Spain, such as his consistent tardiness for training and his addiction to video games and junk food, they certainly have a point.

The big fat Liverpool quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Anfield?

Others are particularly worried about his injury record.

During his time with Barcelona, the 22-year-old has missed no less than 58 matches thanks to eight separate injuries. That is the not the kind of fitness that Klopp can rely on.

One fan, meanwhile, is worried what this could mean for one of the Reds’ current stars.

If Dembele were to be drafted in as a potential replacement for Mane, Liverpool would no doubt be weaker. The Senegal international just picked up the African Player of the Year award and finished fourth in last year’s Ballon d’Or rankings, cementing his place as one of the world’s best players.

For now, though, this is just speculation. It remains to be seen what happens.

In other news, Liverpool are interested in youngster “worth €300m”.

Leeds’ potential XI against Arsenal

Leeds United play against Arsenal on Monday in what would usually be one of the most important games of the Whites’ season.

Unfortunately, the match has had a bit of the shine taken off of it as the Yorkshire outfit have bigger fish to fry at the moment.

As nice as a cup run would be, promotion has to be the priority at Elland Road, and after the fixture congestion of the festive period, Marcelo Bielsa should consider heavily rotating his side.

Here’s how we think he should line up on Monday.

This is a great chance for Illan Meslier to get some practice in between the sticks.

The Frenchman may be called upon in the near future if Casilla does receive his ban, so giving him a chance to get rid of any rustiness could be a great idea.

Leeds’ defence doesn’t have all that much depth to it, so there aren’t too many changes.

Luke Ayling and Liam Cooper keep their spots, while Phil Hay has previously stated that he expects Barry Douglas to take Ezgjan Alioski’s left-back spot, which was then confirmed by Bielsa on Saturday.

The Argentine noted other team news too over the weekend, revealing Alioski will play, but on the wing and in place of Helder Costa.

Gaetano Berardi comes in to replace Ben White as the Brighton loanee has started every league game this term, so could probably do with a period out of the action.

Jordan Stevens keeps Jack Harrison out, while Kalvin Phillips retains his spot.

Robbie Gotts is expected to make his debut in the midfield, and he plays alongside the returning Jamie Shackleton after his injury issues.

After Eddie Nketiah was recalled by the Gunners, Patrick Bamford starts up top.

In other news, Leeds fans have been raving about one man’s performance against West Brom.
