Tottenham can’t afford to get caught up in managerial rumours

According to The Independent, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino would be the number one target if Man United were to sack José Mourinho.

Whilst this must be flattering to Pochettino, and Tottenham in a way, this could be extraordinarily dangerous for the club.

To make things clear, this is not saying that Pochettino should take over at Man United, how well he would do, or who should replace him in north London. That is because it seems almost impossible that he would leave The Lilywhites not only at this point in the season, but at this point in his time at the club. However, these rumours could trouble the club.

Just as Watford struggled last year once manager Marco Silva became embroiled in rumours linking him with the Everton job, Tottenham must make sure the same thing does not happen to them.

All this hysteria surround the Argentinian will wear him out and distract him from the job he has to do at Tottenham. The Lilywhites have had a mixed start to their season, winning some big matches, but equally losing some crunch games too. They cannot afford to let these rumours gather momentum and sabotage the club whilst their season hangs in the balance.

He isn’t simply linked to any club, he is linked to possibly the most famous football club in the world. The hype and mania surrounding this could become insufferable for Tottenham.

Chairman Daniel Levy should make it very clear to the press and to Man United that their man is not going anywhere under any circumstances. He needs to put the matter to bed before any more speculation builds.

Pochettino will not be going anywhere soon, but the rumours may be enough to upset his season.

Liverpool fans willing to be patient with Fabinho due to Klopp’s success with Robertson

Fabinho was the surprise signing of the summer for Liverpool as he was barely linked with the Anfield club in the media. The defensive midfielder was warmly welcomed by the Reds faithful, but he is yet to really get a run-out in the team. The Brazilian has made just three appearances in all competitions, and none of them were in the Premier League.Fabinho made substitute appearances in both of Liverpool’s Champions League games so far, and he started the EFL Cup tie that ended in defeat to Chelsea. The 24-year-old struggled to impress during his full debut, suggesting that he needed more time to find his feet in Jurgen Klopp’s style of play.In an interview withÂLiverpool’s official website, Fabinho admitted that he is still learning to adapt to the manager’s system and the ferociousness of English football.[brid autoplay=”true” video=”304908″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Spurs’ Impressive Run & A Premier League First”]Since the season began, plenty of Liverpool fans have questioned why Fabinho has been warming the bench, but now it seems that they are willing to be patient. On Twitter, some supporters likened the situation to that of Andrew Robertson, who was purposefully left on the sidelines by Klopp in order to get up to speed following his arrival last year.

Between The Lines: Manuel Pellegrini hints there will be more signings at West Ham in January

In his pre-Tottenham Hostpur press conference on Thursday (via Football.London) West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini was asked about the recent rumours from Calciomercato that the Hammers were keen on making a move for Edin Dzeko.

What did he say?

“I cannot answer you about the amount of players who are coming in to West Ham. At least you can talk about five or six players, lots of players want to be here and are linked to West Ham.

“I know him (Dzeko) very well but we are not thinking about him at the moment.”

What did he really mean?

Considering West Ham brought in no fewer than nine players over the summer, one could be forgiven for thinking they wouldn’t feel the need to do any business in January. With Pellegrini claiming that lots of players wanted to make the move though, and that he couldn’t answer about how many players were coming in, it would seem that the plan is to bring in new faces in the winter window.

The Hammers started the season poorly with four losses in their first four Premier League games, but with all the new faces things look like they are starting to click. However, with just three fit central midfielders in Declan Rice, Mark Noble and Pedro Obiang, this could be an area that Pellegrini looks to improve.

Not ruling anything out

Whilst he certainly played down the rumours linking Dzeko with the East London club, Pellegrini did not rule anything out completely and arguably added fuel to the fire with his hedging tactics of ‘at the moment’.

Dzeko won two Premier League titles during his time at Manchester City, one of which was under the Chilean in 2013/14, and there is no doubt that even at 32-years-old he would be a fantastic signing for the Hammers in January.

Surely though if the Bosnian international were to arrive, one of either Javier Hernandez, Lucas Perez, Michail Antonio or Andy Carroll would have to depart the London Stadium.

Liverpool sent scouts to watch Kerim Demirbay

Liverpool will have been impressed by a player’s performance in the Champions League on Tuesday night if rumours are to be correct.

It is understood that the Premier League outfit had sent scouts to watch Kerem Demirbay in action for Hoffenheim against Olympique de Lyonnais, according to reports by Turkish-Football.

The media outlet have claimed in the past that Jurgen Klopp is interested in bringing the Germany international to Anfield and has been keeping close tabs on the player.

The 25-year-old has been in fine form since returning from injury for the Bundesliga outfit, which has also attracted the attention from other sides as well.

Despite having signed a new contract to remain with Hoffenheim, it is also believed that he has a minimum fee release clause of just £28million (€32m), as per Bild, which would be considered a bargain in today’s transfer market for a player of Demirbay’s quality.

The Verdict:

Demirbay is certainly a quality player and could give Liverpool an extra creative option to help take the Anfield outfit to the next level.

The midfielder has created three assists in his last four matches for Hoffenheim and makes a number of driving runs from the middle of the field, which could make him an even more attractive option.

Klopp and the 25-year-old know each other well as both spent time at Borussia Dortmund together, which the German manager may look to use to his advantage if other clubs come calling for him, especially with a fee of just £28m required.

Deal for Thorgan Hazard could halt Silva’s need for a striker

As it stands, Everton don’t really have a top quality out and out striker despite playing summer recruit Richarlison through the middle in the last few games.

In Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun, Everton have two strikers who will never become forwards who can score 20 or more goals in the Premier League. Marco Silva has played summer signing Richarlison through the middle in the last few games and it seems as though the youngster could well be a good fit as the club’s main forward.

Moreover, with Everton being linked with a move for Borussia Monchengladbach winger, Thorgan Hazard, who like his brother, is having a fantastic year.

The Breakdown

The Bundesliga attacker has turned himself into one of the best forwards in Germany over the last few years after a solid two-year spell with Belgian side Zulte Wargeem.

Last year in the Bundesliga he had a superb season as he scored 10 goals to go with eight assists in 34 league games. This year, he’s scored seven in all competitions while creating a further four.

Although he may not have the dribbling ability of his brother, his ability to score goals as well as create them is a trait that not many possess in Europe.

With Bernard on the left, Sigurrdson through the middle and Richarlison up front, Silva could have one of the most attacking team in Europe if he adds the Belgium international. The 25-year-old is valued at £22.5 million and could be a superb piece of business for the club, especially as he’s within the last two years of his deal.

A slice of Premier League genius: Shay Given

Each week on Football FanCast we will be celebrating those special breed who lit up the Premier League with their unique brand of utter genius. This time out we pay homage to a number one who keepered like God intended.

It is admittedly a very odd thing to say about a goalkeeper who played just shy of 500 times in the top flight, made 134 appearances for his country, and was twice included in the PFA Team of the Year but Shay Given was a player with a fault-line that ran throughout his entire career.

The flaw in question – that Given never really addressed right up until his retirement in 2016 – was a reluctance to leave his line and thus dominate his box. Maybe this was due to his smallish stature as a kid, leading to a lifelong habit that became ingrained in him. But whatever the reason for it was, it resulted in two completely polarised consequences.

The first repercussion was that the Irishman never got to play for a top tier elite club – a Manchester United or Arsenal – because to win titles you did need a number one with an intimidating presence who would command his area like a beast and gobble up crosses. A Lehmann say or a Schmiechel.  This is a shame because in terms of pure ability Given was easily one of the top three goalkeepers in the Premier League for at least a decade. Instead he played for Newcastle an impossibly long time then Manchester City for a short spell before downgrading to Aston Villa and Stoke.

The subsequent reckoning however was that at Newcastle in particular he was loved not in the traditional manner that goalkeepers usually are – with a kind of detached admiration and, if they are really good, a gratitude – but as a hero. He was adored like a striker is adored. He was Shay.

Why was this? Again it comes down to his predilection to remain on his line because by doing so it necessitated that Given was a reactive keeper rather than one that prevented danger at source. He was then a shot-stopper; an agile, sometimes acrobatic and occasionally spectacular flinger of body and twister of back and stretcher of finger. He was box-office, relying on razor-sharp reflexes and finely tuned wiles and what is more he was a purist. Come at me. Let’s see what you’ve got. I’ll put everything I have on the line to keep you out.

On countless occasions at St James’ Park they rose as one to acclaim another incredible point-blank stop from their hero. No-one ever paused to consider that if Given had thundered from his six yard line and collected the ball – rather than set himself and allow the striker to get a header in from close range – not only would Newcastle be in possession of the ball but there would be no need to defend a corner after he had somehow tipped that header over the bar.

This all sounds very negative. A slight on a legend. It’s certainly not meant that way and indeed is intended as a plus.

Because frankly who cares if over a highly distinguished 23-year career a few points could have been saved here and there with more pro-activism to crosses. Who cares when out-weighing that is an anthology of brilliant, feline stops that stole the breath right out of your body.

To summarize: so many players celebrated in this series are revered because they played professional football with the unrestricted joy of a 5-a-sider. Why shouldn’t that apply to a goalie too?

It is February 24th 2002. The Magpies are enjoying a fabulous season under the tutorage of Sir Bobby Robson that will see them finish fourth and here they lead Sunderland on Wearside in a ferociously fought derby.

Moments earlier Nikos Dabizas has put the visitors ahead but Sunderland’s will has not been dented: it’s not allowed to be with 48,000 proud Mackems urging them on.

On the left side of the edge of the box the ball falls to Kevin Phillips. He takes a touch and hits a curled effort with pace that is destined for the far corner. It’s the kind of goal he scored time and again. A trademark.

Only this time a hand is flung out and a body is slung. The action is so speeded up its impossible to be certain on first viewing which arm is extended but surely it will be in vain? Such a shot, propelled by such speed and travelling with such accuracy ends up rippling the net. That’s how it always transpired in this vignette. First the thwack, then the ripple, then the celebration.

Not this time though. This time the ball is parried over the ball and the crowd as one put their hands on their heads in utter disbelief.

“What a save,” the commentator wails. This is followed by a ‘well…’ and then silence. Only the very, very best leave a man whose job it is to orate speechless. Shay Given was one of the very, very best.

Rangers fans react to Jon Flanagan’s poor performance in loss to Spartak Moscow

[ad_pod ]

Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to criticise Jon Flanagan’s performance in the Europa League loss to Spartak Moscow on Thursday evening, with the left-back at fault on many occasions as Steven Gerrard’s side shipped four goals.

The former Liverpool full-back, who you could argue was playing out of position on the opposite side of his favoured right-back berth, struggled considerably against the Russian giants.

Rangers took a 3-2 lead into half time in matchday four of their European campaign, only to slip behind by four goals to three just before the hour mark, conceding twice in two minutes in embarrassing fashion.

The loss sees the Glaswegian giants slip to third in Group G with just two games left to play. Whilst the whole team was culpable for the defeat, the Ibrox faithful set their sights on the summer signing as the main culprit.

Let’s take a look at how the Scottish side’s fans reacted to the 25-year-old’s display…

Opinion: Kevin de Bruyne is tailor-made for Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola’s philosophy has completely transformed the global landscape of football ever since he stepped into the Barcelona hot-seat in 2008 and, when historians look back to dissect one of the most revolutionary eras in the history of the sport, Guardiola’s influence will unquestionably be at the centre of the narrative.

The influx of billionaire owners, astronomical TV rights and the subsequent rise in ticket prices have shaped the footballing world since the Premier League was born in 1992, but events happening on the field have arrived in tandem with a philosophical shift instigated by Guardiola.

The parameters from which the beautiful game should be played have shifted; the proverbial goalposts have been moved. Championing a school of thought which has unanimously been accepted as one founded by Johan Cruyff, Guardiola has created a recipe for success like no other.

Manchester City’s Premier League triumph last season and their unprecedented achievement of reaching a staggering total of 100-points was just another chapter in a tale of imperious domination in European football for the Spaniard.

With possession-based principles etched into the heart of his blueprint, City’s embarrassing riches away from the field have been mirrored on the field of play, where countless victims have been put to the slaughter by an unforgiving machine which relentlessly demolishes anything that stands in its way.

Guardiola’s success at the Etihad is littered with individual success stories, with the likes of John Stones and Raheem Sterling flourishing under a leader who facilitates the development of talented young players. But it’s a player who was signed by Guardiola’s predecessor who best embodies everything that is utterly ethereal and captivating about his philosophy, namely Kevin De Bruyne.

The superlatives have been exhausted when describing the baby-faced Belgian, and rightly so. At the heart of City’s midfield, De Bruyne has rapidly established himself as one of the very best playmakers in world football – if not the best.

Combining his supreme technical talent with a willingness to press high on the opposition in a bid to retrieve possession, the Citizens faithful have been treated to countless masterclass performances from a player who possesses the physical attributes to exceed Guardiola’s unforgiving demands on a weekly basis.

While every team needs a superstar, sometimes the presence of an egotistical prima-donna can be unsettling to the squad but, in De Bruyne, City have a superstar who is humble, well-grounded and refreshingly honest in-front of the media.

Incredibly versatile, relentlessly hard-working, technically outstanding, and a genuine perfectionist, De Bruyne is the superstar talent who epitomises the most highly esteemed footballing philosophy on the planet.

Simon Mignolet expected to stay at Liverpool for the rest of the season, fans react

It has been almost a year since Simon Mignolet was dropped as Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper.

The Belgium international held the role for four-and-a-half years before Jurgen Klopp decided to make a change in January 2018.

A string of mistakes led the manager to push Mignolet down to the number two position and promote Loris Karius.

The young German became first choice for the second half of the 2017-18 season, but it was not long before he was shown the door.

After making two notable howlers in Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in Kiev, the club decided to search for a new keeper.

In the end, Brazil’s number one Alisson was bought from Roma and he automatically took the number one spot.

Karius left to join Besiktas on a two-year loan, while Mignolet stayed put as second string.

Given his lack of minutes this season, it would not have been a shock to see him leave Anfield in January.

However, according to the Liverpool Echo, Mignolet is expected to stay until the end of the season as Klopp wants him to remain as back-up for Alisson.

On Reddit, a number of Reds fans posted their thoughts on the situation.

HYS: Should Everton swoop for West Ham’s Arnautovic?

[ad_pod ]

Everton’s main ambition this season is to break into the top six, and majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri made a statement by releasing a large number of funds in the summer window.

Manager Marco Silva recruited a group of talented stars to strengthen pretty much every area of the pitch.

The attacking third was somewhat neglected, though, as the Portuguese coach did not bring in a new striker.

Cenk Tosun, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Oumar Niasse are the team’s main striker options, but none of them have made a big impression.

Due to the lack of firepower up front, Silva moved Richarlison from the wing to a more advanced position, and it has been working well so far.

Despite this, Everton are constantly being linked with a move for a new attacker with the January window approaching.

The Playmaker FC squad decided to wind-up some unsuspecting Brazil fans at the Emirates on Saturday night. Watch the hilarious results in the video below…

There have been exit rumours circling around West Ham United’s Marko Arnautovic, which has led us to ask you if Everton should make a swoop in two months’ time for a player that would strengthen their top-six ambitions.
