Rangers target who already has Ibrox offer won’t play for his club again

After a deal to sign Jose Cordoba collapsed, Rangers have turned their attention towards another South American defender, who already reportedly has an offer on the table from Ibrox.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers looked destined to sign Cordoba, before a deal ultimately collapsed with Norwich City now the leading candidates to land the young defender's signature. He would have followed Jefte through the door to complete Rangers' second signing in a matter of weeks to start their summer transfer window with a bang, but Philippe Clement has now been forced to find another option.

That's not to say that Rangers have given up on the South American market following their Cordoba failure, however. In fact, it's quite the opposite. According to Chilean outlet Despliegue Fútbol, Rangers have presented an offer to Thomas Galdames, who has reportedly played his final game for Godoy Cruz in Argentina, winning 4-0 against El Porvenir this week.

Clement already personally eyeing new Rangers moves after Cordoba collapse

The Gers aren’t wasting any time…

ByTom Cunningham May 29, 2024

The 25-year-old left-back, who can also play as a centre-back, also reportedly has offers from Belgium and must now make his decision. With Rangers looking to fill the role that many believed Cordoba would, Galdames could emerge as the perfect option at Ibrox this summer.

Having already filled their left-back role with the arrival of Jefte, it will be interesting to see whether Clement would opt to turn Galdames into a central defender on a permanent basis if he completes a move to Scotland this summer. On paper, it's a risk, but it could be one worth taking if the Chilean finds his feet quickly and becomes the defender that the Gers are clearly after.

"Confident" Galdames can make up for Cordoba collapse

The Gers certainly aren't wasting any time feeling sorry for themselves after missing out on Cordoba, turning their attention straight to Galdames. And if Nathan Joyes' praise is anything to go by, dubbing the defender as "confident in the final third" among other positives, then those at Ibrox should be hoping to see Rangers get this one over the line.

If the aim isn't for Galdames to arrive and step into the centre-back role, then he will be left competing with Jefte and question marks will naturally begin to rise regarding the future of Ridvan Yilmaz, who has been linked with an Ibrox exit in the past.

Ridvan Yilmaz

It's certainly solid planning from Rangers, either way. On the one hand, they'll have a left-back ready to compete if Yilmaz leaves, and on the other, Clement could mould a top centre-back.

The German champions view the young midfielder as a key piece in their long-term plans, and they are reportedly keen on securing his services as they continue to build a squad capable of dominating both domestically and in Europe.

  • WHAT LOTHAR MATTHAUS SAID

Speaking as a pundit on , Matthäus suggested that Wirtz should remain at Leverkusen until after the 2026 World Cup. The former World Cup winner believes that staying in a familiar environment would be beneficial for Wirtz as he prepares to represent Germany on the world stage in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

"I think it would be best for him to prepare for the 2026 World Cup in a familiar environment," he said. "Will he have the same position as he did in Leverkusen if he goes to Liverpool, Manchester or Barcelona? There is only one category for him. That's why I would recommend that he stay until 2026. Then he will be 23 years old and will have 10 more wonderful years abroad. He is still at an age where he hasn't won that many championships. The Champions League games this year are also experiences that will make him even stronger. Hopefully, he stays injury-free."

Cricketers' mental health charity faces £250,000 shortfall

A charity which provides mental health services to professional cricketers past and present in the UK is facing a “quarter of a million pounds” funding shortfall because of the Covid-19 lockdown. As with many charities, the ban on mass public gatherings has forced the cancellation of most fundraising events for the Professional Cricketers’ Trust, the charity arm of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA). The Trust pays for mental health treatment for PCA members and was aiming to collect around £250,000 (US$306,000) for this year before the pandemic hit.Ian Thomas, PCA Director of Development and Welfare, said the organisation, which represents current and former cricketers, would have to address a hit to the budget right at a time when demand for mental health services had spiked.”We’re going to have a tough year ahead,” Thomas told ESPNcricinfo. “We’ve lost all of our fundraising events, we’re going to lose the best part of what we’d aimed to raise, about a quarter of a million pounds, and we will not see a single event, auction or anything that will allow us to raise those funds.”We’ve got some challenges ahead as a charity to maintain the levels of support that we’ve put in place and I’m sure we’ll get through it and the cricket fraternity will try to help our charity as much as it can as well.”ALSO READ: ‘It’s ok to ask for help’ – Dom BessLast year, 85 people sought mental health support from the PCA Trust, including 40 current players, and all 85 received treatment. That compares with 72 cases in 2018 and 59 in 2017.Thomas said that this year, the Trust had seen the usual seasonal rise in cases experienced by mental health charities in the post-Christmas period of January and February followed by a lull in March when lockdown was introduced. In the past week or so, however, there had been a marked increase in mental health referrals.”Interestingly, I’ve heard this with other sports,” Thomas said. “I have a fear it may have gone quiet initially because we were in lockdown, there was other things to focus on, but the worry for me amongst our members is people will face hardship from this situation.”There’s an economic downturn, there’s job losses out there. I think it’s a long game. The important thing is we have the support in place for a long time to come because the effect of this situation isn’t just going to be an eight-to-12-week lockdown, it’s going to be a two-year recovery … I’m making an assumption it’s two years, it could take a lot longer.”Sporting Chance founder, Tony Adams MBE talks with PCA Director of Development and Welfare Ian Thomas•Getty Images

One way in which the Professional Cricketers’ Trust differs from many mental health charities is that it is able to refer members to private mental health treatment almost immediately through a partnership with Sporting Chance, the organisation founded by former international and Arsenal footballer Tony Adams.Thomas said treatment usually consisted of six to 12 therapy sessions but in some cases, as with a former player earlier this year, it could include residential treatment. The majority of cases involve depression and anxiety, although help is offered for a range of issues, including gambling addiction. While in practical and financial terms the Trust is only able to help its members, the PCA is able to reach the wider community through members telling their stories. Young England spinner Dom Bess recently spoke out about his battle with depression, while former England batsman and Professional Cricketers’ Trust director Marcus Trescothick has become a staunch mental health advocate following his own experience of anxiety and depression.Marcus Trescothick: saved lives, changed his sport•Getty Images

Trescothick said the ability to speak about mental health “comes down to trust”. Whether that trust is found among team-mates or outside came down to individual preference.”You’ll have potentially one or two people in that changing room environment where you potentially can feel a bit more open, where you can explain something,” Trescothick told ESPNcricinfo’s Switch Hit podcast.”For me, it was quite an easy thing to do. I didn’t feel it was a problem for me. I appreciate that’s not the same for everybody because it’s so individual how people cope. But I felt better by telling people in the changing room what was going on. Because then we could laugh and joke about it, normalise it as much as we could, and really take the sting out of it.”I could let everybody know, ‘lads, I need to disappear off and see my psychologist today, I’m really struggling at the moment,’ and that worked great for me.”I also played with other players who never mentioned a word in the changing room to any cricketing friends, in that environment, because they didn’t want to. And that’s fine, because that’s their way of dealing with it. There’s no right or wrong way, it’s just whatever way you find you can cope.”The PCA operates a telephone helpline but Thomas said the majority of mental health referrals came either through people contacting the organisation directly or via one of six personal development managers.

Mark Boucher excited 'to see the guys grow a bit' in white-ball cricket

The South Africa head coach mentioned that the lockdown in the country hasn’t “really disrupted our plans”

After a period of uncertainty and flux, the South African team is enjoying some stability under the care of coach Mark Boucher•Getty Images

Mark Boucher has called South Africa’s win over Australia in the ODI series in March the “light at the end of the tunnel” after a difficult first season in charge of the men’s national side. Boucher took over in December and oversaw South Africa lose a Test and T20 series to England, draw a rain-affected ODI series, lose a T20 rubber to Australia and finally win the ODI series 3-nil, which gave Boucher hope that South Africa are progressing, albeit mostly in shorter formats. With back-to-back T20 World Cups in the next two years and the 2023 fifty-over tournament marking the end of Boucher’s contract period, that’s no bad thing and is so far allowing for the talent pool to deepen.”The exciting thing was in white-ball cricket, to see the guys grow a bit. We gave quite a lot of opportunities to youngsters and they started to gel as a team and not allow one particular guy to carry them through,” Boucher said. “Our performance against Australia was the light at the end of the tunnel but it’s not that it’s the finished product.”To get there, Boucher wants to continue up-skilling his players and is hopeful he will still be able to make use of the expertise of batting consultant Jacques Kallis and spin-bowling consultant Paul Harris, whose short stints with the national side have come to an end. The duo were brought in on a temporary basis for the 2019-20 summer to supplement the coaching staff made up of Boucher, assistant Enoch Nkwe, bowling coach Charl Langeveldt and fielding coach Justin Ontong.”I’m not too sure what will happen with Jacques Kallis and Paul Harris, but hopefully can sort something out contractually because we would be stupid not to make use of their experience,” Boucher said.ALSO READ: Cricket South Africa to advertise for selection convener, national coachesExpanding the support staff would likely be dependent on Cricket South Africa’s budget, which will be squeezed following the departure of Standard Bank as a sponsor at the end of this month. The organisation has indicated they are in talks with a new corporate backer but remain cautious about their financial position, as is the case with many entities worldwide.CSA have been slightly less affected than most, with the shutdown coinciding with the end of the summer. As a result, they will not suffer losses from postponed tours and may even save some money if their scheduled visit to West Indies for the A side and both the men’s and women’s national teams, scheduled between June and August do not go ahead.Despite those uncertainties, the rest of South African cricket has been largely unaffected by the current situation, having lost only two ODIs in India and the women’s home series against Australia so far. “I don’t think it has really disrupted our plans. We were always going to be having a break at this time,” Boucher said. “The plan was to give the guys some off time, to travel a bit, spend some time with the families, they are certainly spending some time with the families now but not traveling and there’s time to get rid of a few niggles their bodies have picked up.”But it’s not all rest and relaxation. South Africa’s players will all go through fitness tests as when the country’s lockdown ends – at the moment this is due to happen on April 16 – and will be expected to have maintained their conditioning. “We have put in some programs with regards to keeping fit and strong around your household,” Boucher said. “We are putting new fitness clauses in contracts so you need to be fit.”

Club expected to offer "extraordinary" new Eto’o to Everton in swap deal

An "extraordinary" player who has been compared to Samuel Eto'o "could interest" Everton in the summer transfer window, with a player-plus-cash deal mooted.

Everton transfer news

The Blues have been linked with a host of players in the summer, with former Celtic youngster Karamoko Dembele one player who has emerged as a possible target. He has even been likened to Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Jack Harrison joined Everton on loan from Leeds United last summer, and having done well overall in his first season at Goodison Park, it looks as though Sean Dyche is keen to make his temporary move a permanent one. They are believed to be in pole position to snap him up.

In terms of long-term additions, 16-year-old Mason Melia has also been backed to join the Blues in the near future, with the St Patrick's Athletic forward seen as a huge prospect in his homeland of Ireland.

Now, it looks as though Everton are in the mix to acquire the signature of a player who is known around the world.

Everton could be offered "extraordinary" ace

According to Sport [via Sport Witness], Barcelona youngster Ansu Fati "could interest" Everton this summer, with the Spaniard one of four names mentioned in the report, along with Fermin Lopez, Clement Lenglet and Sergino Dest.

He could arrive in a player-plus-cash deal involving Amadou Onana, who has been linked with a move to Barca endless times in recent months.

Fati is on loan at Brighton currently, but his time at the Amex Stadium hasn't gone to plan, only starting three games in the Premier League this season, with 15 appearances coming his way overall. Barcelona are expected to offer up the four players for Everton to take their pick from, hoping to lower the sum required for their own deal for Onana.

The Barcelona ace is still only 21, however, so it would be foolish to write him off, especially as he has been compared to Barca legend Samuel Eto'o in the past. He has also been lauded by former manager Xavi.

Given his age and ceiling as a player, Fati would be an exciting option for Everton to take a punt on, and the fact that the above report states that he needs to "find a new club" this summer suggests he is the most likely candidate in any player-plus-cash deal for Onana.

There has been plenty of speculation to suggest that the Wales international striker is registering on the recruitment radar at SToK Racecourse. Wrexham are being linked with another frontman after seeing Paul Mullin ruled out of their pre-season tour of North America by surgery on niggling back and hamstring injuries.

Bradshaw is a proven EFL performer and has spent the last six years playing in the Championship with Millwall – scoring 42 second tier goals for the Lions. The 31-year-old would be another notable addition at Wrexham, but his current boss is eager to bring the exit rumours to a close.

WHAT HARRIS SAID

Harris has told of the gossip surrounding Bradshaw: “You [SLP] articulated a really good piece last week on Tom – how much he loves the club and how much he’d like to extend his stay here with his family settled in the area. Then, 48 hours later, someone puts it out that Tom Bradshaw has been linked with various clubs. I did read that and have a little chuckle to myself.

“He [Bradshaw] is an infectious character. He gives a real energy and buzz around the place. I’ve really enjoyed coming back and working with Tom because he has developed so much as a character and a player since I signed him seven years ago. His game has slightly changed now. I look forward to continue working with him. Tom is with us and a massive part of the plans moving forward.”

Wrexham may decide to focus on other areas of Phil Parkinson’s squad ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, as they already have Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Steven Fletcher, Jack Marriott and Sam Dalby on their books. South Africa, looking to rebuild after a terrible ODI World Cup, have an entirely new-look squad – four of their players are uncapped in T20Is and two are yet to play any international cricket – led by a new captain, Quinton de Kock.India, meanwhile, seem to be stepping away from their old, ODI-influenced T20I template, with their selections pointing towards a desire for increased batting depth. The wristspin twins, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, have as a result given way – temporarily at least – to a plethora of spin-bowling allrounders. For both teams, the series gains extra significance with a T20 World Cup coming up in just over a year’s time. That World Cup will be played in Australia, and if any Indian ground can simulate Australian T20 conditions, it is Mohali. The resemblance isn’t as much to do with the pitch, which is usually true and flat rather than fast and bouncy, as with the vast outfield, which gives bowlers a little more leeway and adds a bit more of a tactical dimension to matches, with sixes a slightly scarcer commodity than usual. In the spotlightHardik Pandya has batted 61 times in 66 matches for Mumbai Indians, but only 24 times in 38 T20Is. How have India underutilised his hitting skills to this extent? Will their new emphasis on batting depth also free up the top order to take more risks? He didn’t have the greatest of World Cups, and he’s slipped away from the spotlight in the months since while the world has raved about Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer. Latest Wolves transfer news: £60m Neto claim, exciting replacement eyed

Football FanCast brings you the latest Wolverhampton Wanderers transfer round-up.

In typical Wolves fashion, the club left any transfer dealings until the last minute in the January transfer window, which meant they failed on their main aim to get a striker in before the deadline. However, things weren't made easy though, as FFP concerns heavily weighed on the shoulder of Gary O'Neil with Premier League giving Nottingham Forest and Everton a slap on the wrist.

Despite the lack of signings, Wolves have been in superb form under O'Neil of late, and even stand a chance of pushing for an unlikely European place from here on in.

Latest Wolves transfer rumours

Wolves forward Pedro Neto in Premier League action.

According to former Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers, the Midlands club could look to sell Pedro Neto in the summer transfer window for around £60 million.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Wolves are showing an interest in signing Arsenal youngster Amario Cozier-Duberry.

Also, Fotbol Direkt claim that Wolves were ready to launch a late bid for Lucas Bergvall in the winter transfer window, but he had already given his word to Spurs so joined them.

Wolves 2023/24 transfers

This summer just gone was a bit of a nightmare if you're a Wolves fan or Julien Lopetegui, as the threat of FFP and balancing out the books took the limelight.

The Midlands club did manage to sign Matheus Cunha after his loan spell last season, but they had to make plenty of sacrifices, as the likes of Ruben Neves, Matheus Nunes and Nathan Collins all secured exits.

Wolves managed to raise around £144 million in the last two transfer windows, which massively helped in their bid to escape any kind of punishment from the Premier League for FFP rules.

The most notable exits were the likes of Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes, who had both grown to be important players at Molineux.

One other big departure was Conor Coady finally leaving after captaining the side to a number of successful seasons.
