Man Utd ready to make £100m+ offer to sign "high quality" Real Madrid star

Manchester United are in desperate need for reinforcements, and may return to an old hunting ground to land one this summer, it has emerged.

Red Devils ship sinks at Chelsea

Two goals from Cole Palmer in the 99th and 101st minute saw Manchester United throw away a 3-2 lead against Chelsea to lose 4-3 on Thursday night, in a game that often resembled a League One clash from a quality standpoint, rather than a Premier League game.

United boss Erik ten Hag then claimed that he felt his side were 'fantastic' and 'dominated the game', but they conceded 28 shots (10 on target) and threw away another three points just days after conceding in the 97th minute against Brentford.

ByCharlie Smith Apr 5, 2024

It means that now no side in Europe's top five league has faced more shots in 2024 than the Red Devils' 225 (an average of 22.5 per game) and though there are certainly mitigating circumstances with two more defenders going off injured last night, it feels very much like Ten Hag's regime is nearing its end.

They sit sixth in the Premier League as things stand, but understat claim that going by expected points they could in fact be as low as 13th, between Nottingham Forest and West Ham United, and that they have been riding their luck to even be in a European football spot for next season.

But despite all the woe on the pitch, the arrival of new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has brought hope off it, and this summer is his first chance to make his mark on a sleeping giant.

United eye marquee deal for Real Madrid star

Now, 90min claim he is planning to do just that, with the INEOS chief weighing up a move for Real Madrid sensation Rodrygo.

Unlike Casemiro and Raphael Varane, Rodrygo would be making the move from the Santiago Bernabeu to Old Trafford in the prime of his career, with the Brazilian having scored 15 times already this season, with his latest two strikes earning high praise from Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.

The impending arrivals of both Endrick and Kylian Mbappe to bolster the Real Madrid frontline has left plenty feeling that Rodrygo will be the man to miss out, and the Brazilian could see himself needing to leave the club to gain regular football once more.

As per reports in Spain [Via 90min], the Red Devils are "ready" to throw their hat in the ring for his services, and could offer up to 120m euros (£103m) to get the deal done and make the 23-year-old the crown jewel of their future project.

With plenty of work to do on the rest of the squad and a lack of Champions League football, a mega-money move looks unlikely in truth, with Liverpool and Arsenal both also thought to be keen on the Brazilian should he become available.

West Brom could have perfect Furlong heir in gem starring out on loan

West Bromwich Albion are confident that they will battle it out in the Championship playoffs at the end of the regular campaign, Carlos Corberan's Baggies now eight points clear of seventh spot after a 2-0 win against Bristol City.

That victory demonstrated West Brom's effective nature at being able to grind out three points under the pressure of keeping their grip tight on a top-six spot, with the West Midlands outfit now unbeaten in the second tier since losing to Southampton in mid-February.

Darnell Furlong put in another understated but stellar display against the Robins, keeping up his sterling individual campaign – which has seen him become a trusted member of the Baggies back four – by winning seven duels to make the win less nervy.

Yet, despite the West Brom number two continuing to be dependable, Corberan and Co will have one eye on the future in the form of an exciting loanee who could, one day, oust the 28-year-old defender.

Ethan Ingram's time at West Brom

Able to play anywhere down the right-hand side, whether that be as a disciplined right-back or further forward as a gallivanting winger, 20-year-old Ethan Ingram is highly thought of in the West Midlands.

Ingram hasn't just accumulated 82 games in and around the U18 and U21 sides by fluke, showing off his knack of being creative even when playing in defence in the Premier League 2 just last campaign with four assists from 19 games.

In total, the 6 foot 1 starlet has managed to pick up nine assists in these age brackets with his sparkling performances even being recognised here and there by Ingram being given chances in the first-team fold at West Brom.

Before a move to League Two Salford City on loan came about to test himself in the men's game further, Ingram had made three senior appearances for the Baggies.

Unfortunately, the last of those came in August of this season with Corberan opting to give fellow homegrown product Tom Fellows more opportunities to shine over picking Ingram.

Now, however, he could be in the West Brom manager's plans going forward based on his excellent displays as a loanee at the Peninsula Stadium to date.

Ethan Ingram's time at Salford City in numbers

Obviously, it would be a big jump-up in quality for Ingram if he was thrown into Championship or even Premier League football for that matter next season.

But, there will come a time for Ingram to shine if patience is exercised after taking to the fourth tier swimmingly.

Labelled as an "outstanding" talent by ex-Salford boss Neil Wood before his dismissal at the back-end of 2023, Ingram has shone playing both as a right winger and right-back in his new location.

The 20-year-old has even managed to net his first-ever senior goal playing for the Ammies, bombing forward with pace to burn to then curl home a strike against Swindon Town in October.

Away from his marauding runs paying off, Ingram has also slotted into the set-up at Salford as a reliable defender who can provide gritty displays much like Furlong can back at the Hawthorns.

Averaging 4.6 duels won per game in League Two from 21 appearances so far – alongside showing off his attacking prowess with four big chances created overall – Ingram could be knocking on the door for more opportunities at his parent club next season.

Still, with Furlong at the very top of his game this campaign, the Baggies should enjoy their ever-reliable 28-year-old whilst they can before any talk moves to Ingram taking his position when the number two does begin to wane.

Uh oh: Journalist shares "big" Alonso to Liverpool update from top sources

As the Anfield faithful prepare for life without Jürgen Klopp, it seems that Liverpool have already faced a major set back in their quest for a new manager.

Liverpool braced for rebuild this summer

It appears that the sudden news of Klopp's departure was the starter pistol for a mass exodus at Liverpool with a number of top talents now linked with a move away from the Premier League side.

With rumours swirling about who will occupy the dugout from next season, Liverpool are also preparing for a slew of key players to also walk out of the door at Anfield. The contracts of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are all set to expire in 2025, with the latter two already tipped for a move away from Liverpool.

Whilst the playing staff focus on the domestic and European competitions still up for grabs, it appears that FSG have begun their mammoth task of shaping the post-Klopp era on Merseyside. Liverpool have looked to tempt ex-sporting director Michael Edwards back into his old post, although there is no guarantee that he would be interested in returning.

Facing a to-do-list a mile long, FSG appear to have been dealt a significant blow in their quest to find the man to suceed Klopp at Anfield.

Development in Liverpool's manager search

According to Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, well-placed sources have stated that Xabi Alonso currently prefers a move to Bayern Munich rather than Liverpool. The current Bayer Leverkusen manager played for both sides during his illustrious career however, now appears to favour staying in Germany rather than moving to Merseyside.

Xabi Alonso in action for Liverpool.

The sources told the outlet that Alonso and his family are “happy and comfortable” in Germany in a "big" update in Liverpool's search for a manager. It is an open secret that the Spaniard is FSG's first choice to take over next season but it is reported that the club are also looking at other options.

The Spaniard's Leverkusen side currently sit top of the Bundesliga with a ten-point lead over Bayern Munich. Scoring almost 2.5 goals per game, it is clear that Alonso would be well-equipped to inherit and continue Klopp's brand of 'heavy metal' football.

The 42-year-old already received a massive vote of confidence from Klopp himself earlier this month when the German tipped Alonso to become one of the great managers.

With the praise of an Anfield legend and one hand on the Bundesliga title, there is no doubt that Alonso would be a celebrated arrival on Merseyside. However, with the competitive and often ferocious nature of the Premier League, Alonso staying in Germany to wrap up a couple more league titles may not be the worst idea.

"It’s an honour" – 44 year-old has now "heard" that Liverpool want him

It's all change this summer at Liverpool, starting with the emotional exit of Jurgen Klopp alongside his backroom staff, which includes assistant manager Pep Lijnders. Meanwhile, the Reds will also be forced to search for a new sporting director once again, having been forced to do so last summer, following Jorg Schmadtke's departure.

Ahead of some vital decisions, the Reds have now heards the thoughts of one of their potential replacements in the roles away from the pitch.

Liverpool's next sporting director

When you think of Liverpool sporting directors, the name Michael Edwards instantly springs to mind. Edwards was a central part of the rebuild that took place at Anfield, producing genius transfers which helped shaped Klopp's historic run. The responsibility then fell the way of Julian Ward, who always had an impossible task when attempting to replicate the work of Edwards.

Following Ward, Schmadtke was handed the role on a short-term basis last summer, overseeing Liverpool's midfield evolution, welcoming Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch. The German can consider his short spell a great success, with the Reds back at the summit of English football after a disastrous campaign last time out. But now, the search for another sporting director is on once again.

One name linked so far has been West Ham United's Tim Steidten, who has since publicly reacted to the rumours, via Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg. Steidten has been West Ham's technical director since last summer and previously had experience in the Bundesliga with both Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen, perhaps making him an ideal candidate for those at Anfield.

Steidten's West Ham success

The 44-year-old was instantly thrown into the deep end at the London Stadium, with Declan Rice's big-money departure creating pressure to get deals done and the right ones, at that. Now months later, it looks as though Steidten and all involved got things fairly spot on, given the names that they welcomed in the summer window.

Mohammed Kudus

€43m (£38m)

Edson Alvarez

€38m (£32m)

James Ward-Prowse

€35m (£30m)

Konstantinos Mavropanos

€20m (£17m)

Andy Irving

€2m (£2m)

Kudus has been particularly successful and with Salah's current Liverpool contract set to expire in the summer of 2025, Steidten's West Ham link could provide the Reds with a major boost should they look towards Kudus to replace the Egyptian. Kudus' stats – 13 goals and three assists in all competitions – certainly show promise.

Whoever does come in to replace Schmadtke this summer has been left in a solid position, rather than being handed a complicated task. Klopp, Schmadtke and others already began the formation of Liverpool 2.0 last year, meaning that Steidten or potentially another option would just have to pick up where they left off.

United endured a period of uncertainty after winning the FA Cup, as it was unclear if Ten Hag would stay on as manager. THE BIGGER PICTURE

As INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe attempted to gauge interest from potential successors, the reports that United spoke to Silva. The Fulham boss guided his side to a 13th-placed finish last season and discussions were held over him potentially making a stunning move to Old Trafford.

In a chaotic period, United also held talks with former Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino following his Chelsea exit. Gareth Southgate was also seen as a frontrunner if he were to leave England after Euro 2024.

Ten Hag appears to be in talks over extending his contract at United, although that has yet to be announced. In the meantime, Silva will continue to prepare for 2024-25 with Fulham.

Man Utd could’ve signed “monster” Casemiro replacement to partner Mainoo

Manchester United failed to make any new additions to their squad in January.

A striker was the priority for the month, however, the last two matches have highlighted both a problem and a solution to Erik ten Hag's midfield.

With that in mind, let's take a look at the player United missed out on who could have elevated the side dramatically.

Man United's midfield dilemma

In the last week of the transfer window, reports indicated that the Old Trafford outfit were in talks to sign Morten Hjulmand.

The Danish midfielder only joined Sporting CP in the summer from Lecce, but he has already excelled in his new surroundings. The Portuguese club have slapped a £68m release clause in the player's contract, which ultimately meant that the Red Devils couldn't sign him in the winter.

However, in an alternate reality, the 24-year-old could have been walking onto the Old Trafford pitch against West Ham United on Sunday in place of Casemiro.

The Brazilian returned to the United squad last Sunday against Newport County, and his performance left a lot to be desired. Throughout the game, the 31-year-old was sluggish, wasteful, and completely off the pace, as highlighted by his four fouls and 64% pass accuracy.

Casemiro's performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers this week was slightly better, but his inability to lock down the midfield on his own was glaringly obvious. The former Real Madrid man was dribbled past four times, committed a penalty, and only won five of his 12 ground duels.

How Hjulmand could have unleashed Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo has been United's most consistent performer over the last month or so, and it is clear that Ten Hag has realised just how important he is to the side, as he has played every minute of the last four games after he was substituted at half-time against Nottingham Forest.

The 18-year-old skillset is extremely well-rounded, and he has been utilised as a defensive midfielder mainly since coming into the side. However, his last two matches have indicated that his best role may be slightly further forward as a box-to-box number eight, as he has scored in both of them, including a last-minute winner on Thursday, where he showed the world what he's truly capable of and why he's such a "special" prospect, as per analyst Ben Mattinson.

Having Hjulmand in the side would allow Mainoo's creative traits to flourish, as well as his ability to affect the game in the final third. The table below Hjulmand's statistics from this Europa League season proves why.

As you can see, Hjulmand is the definition of a "monster" out of possession, as alluded to by journalist Zach Lowy, due to his athleticism and ability to cover ground, unlike Casemiro. The Danish international reads the game brilliantly and mops up in the middle of the pitch, as shown by his interceptions and tackle statistics.

Just by fielding Hjulmand in the starting XI, United would be much more defensively secure in transition, which is where they are currently caught out with Casemiro in the team, and what is preventing the number 37 from pushing on. Therefore, Mainoo could move further forward to provide support to the attacking players while also having the option to drop deeper to get on the ball.

Kobbie Mainoo

Giving the academy graduate the freedom to express himself anywhere on the field could just see him develop into United's best midfielder since the days of Paul Scholes.

Trailblazers clinch last-ball win despite Harmanpreet cameo

Two big stars of Indian women’s cricket took centrestage in Jaipur as the multi-team Women’s T20 Challenge kicked off with a final-ball thriller, much like how the one-off exhibition game had ended in Mumbai last year. Except this time, Trailblazers captain Smriti Mandhana’s enterprising 90 trumped her opposite number Harmanpreet Kaur’s unbeaten 46 as Supernovas fell short by an agonising two runs.Chasing 19 off the last over, Harmanpreet nearly pulled off an encore of her performance on her Lancashire Thunder debut at last year’s Kia Super League, when she struck a last-ball six in a chase, carting Jhulan Goswami for four fours off the first five balls, the last one landing only inside the rope. Needing three off the last ball, Harmanpreet slashed hard but couldn’t connect with the length ball outside off, and the attempted bye ended with wicketkeeper R Kalpana catching non-striker Lea Tahuhu short of her ground at her end.The near-perfect Harman-Devine showWhen Harmanpreet walked in at No. 4 after eight overs, Supernovas’ asking rate (7.16) was only a shade above their run rate 6.87. With Trailblazers shelling several chances, little suggested Mandhana’s side won’t have to pay for the drops. Keeping to her scratchy-at-first-sublime-thereafter template, Harmanpreet scored six off her first 10 balls. An unforgiving punch off Harleen Deol in the 12th over fetched Harmanpreet the first of her eight fours, the same number collected by the six other Supernovas batsmen.During her 48-run stand with No. 6 Sophie Devine, Harmanpreet was off the strike for the major part as Devine herself, with her 22-ball 32, looked set to hand Trailblazers the finality. Having taken Supernovas to 122, Devine was trapped in front by Sophie Ecclestone. Devine used the review, the first of the tournament, but it wasn’t overturned. The dismissal, eventually, proved a match-winning one as Ecclestone rounded out her 20th birthday with 2 for 11 that played a key role in victory for her side.Below-par fielding a worry for TrailblazersA misfield in the third over from Deepti Sharma handed Jemimah Rodrigues her first four. In the sixth, Deepti dropped the same batsman on 16, the ball popping out of her hands over her head at mid-on after she got both hands to it, and it was just the start of more telling shoddiness that was to follow.Chamari Atapattu got two lives in the eighth over, bowled by Shakera Selman. Stafanie Taylor first put down a straightforward chance at deep square leg on the first ball before D Hemalatha ran in hard from sweeper cover two balls later, but couldn’t hold on despite getting her hands under the ball. The first drop had Mandhana clutch her knees, the second brought out a huge sigh (of disbelief) from Selman. But then came a moment of brilliance, courtesy Selman herself. Anticipating the striker Atapattu’s call for a quick single on the leg side, Selman swooped in while carrying on from her follow-through, and put in a full-length forward-stretch to fire a direct hit at the wicketkeeper’s end to catch Rodrigues well short of her ground, for a 19-ball 24.The drop that nearly cost them the game came in the 17th over. Harmanpreet, on 25, launched Taylor down the ground, where Hemalatha went to her left from long-on and shelled her second catch of the night. Four drops, yet ending on the winning side? Trailblazers should be thanking their stars captain.Mandhana magic: sedate and scintillatingMandhana lived up to her reputation with an uncharacteristic 67-ball 90, her second-highest T20 score. If her maiden T20 ton, for Western Storm in KSL 2018, against Harmanpreet’s Lancashire Thunder was all menace, the magic took time to unfold on Monday. It wasn’t until the 35th ball of her innings that Mandhana’s strike rate touched 100. That was largely down to Harmanpreet persisting with spin for the major part of that period, and Mandhana’s early struggle was borne out in the seven runs she scored off her Maharashtra team-mate Anuja Patil, the offspinner. Her first two fours – in a combined tally of 10 fours and three sixes – came 23 balls apart. As she loves pace on the ball, the four she broke her shackles with came off the first delivery bowled by Tahuhu. Thereafter, her willow oozed the class the 22-year-old is famed for. The highlight of her 119-run second-wicket stand with Deol (36 off 44) was the six – the first of the match – off wristpinner Poonam Yadav that floated over the extra cover boundary. Dragging her side to a respectable total has become second-nature to Mandhana in the recent past, thanks to India’s middle-order woes. But on Monday, her knock also cushioned her side amid an otherwise deplorable fielding performance.

James Harris, Dawid Malan summon fight for Middlesex

Despite being made to follow on after Nathan Buck’s five-for, Middlesex reaches 109 for 2 and with hope of saving the game

ECB Reporters Network07-Apr-2019James Harris and Dawid Malan gave Middlesex hope of saving the game at Northampton with fifties at the start and end of the third day. Harris’ first-innings 61 not out reduced the deficit to 174 and then, having been asked to follow on, Malan went to the close unbeaten on 55 as Middlesex ended a day of uniform grey cloud 109 for 2, trailing by 65.Having been dominated for the first two days of the match, Middlesex desperately needed a response and Harris provided one in the morning session. Resuming on 134 for 7, Harris and Toby Roland-Jones finally got to grips with their task and calmly added 59 for the eighth wicket through several back-foot punches and a two very sweet straight drives from Harris. The Welshman was dropped on 25 – a sharp low chance to Jason Holder’s left boot – and then went through to fifty in 92 balls with six fours. The pair occupied the first hour before Roland-Jones was trapped lbw by Nathan Buck. But Steven Finn made an enterprising, if fortuitous 34, to add another 74 for the ninth wicket before Buck wrapped up the innings four overs after lunch – Finn driving to second slip and No. 11 Tim Murtagh holing out to mid-off – to seal a five-wicket haul. Not deterred by their horrific collapse here last season, when Northants lost having asked Middlesex to follow-on, Alex Wakely sent the visitors in again and Buck struck twice with the new ball – Nick Gubbins driving to Holder at second slip before Stevie Eskinazi found third slip to fall for a second-ball duck.At 10 for 2 and still more 150 behind, Middlesex were sliding out of the game but Sam Robson survived numerous plays-and-misses to anchor the innings and Malan found some good touch at the other end. He was particularly fluent after a rain-extended tea where 64 runs came in 13 overs, cutting and driving with purpose to reach his half-century in 60 balls. The third-wicket stand had added 99 before bad light ended the day 22 overs early. With a showery forecast for the final day, Northants might be concerned about forcing a victory their performance from the first two days has set them up for.
