Pakistan exile is devastating for next generation – Wasim Akram

Wasim Akram, Pakistan’s legendary left-arm fast bowler, has echoed the concerns voiced by Misbah-ul-Haq on the eve of the Edgbaston Test, that the continuing exile of Pakistan’s cricketers from their homeland is having a devastating effect on the next generation of players coming through the ranks.Wasim, who claimed 414 wickets in 104 Tests, cemented his legendary status by bowling Pakistan to victory in the 1992 World Cup. However, his big break came after being discovered by Javed Miandad as a raw and rapid net bowler in November 1984, and was propelled into the national team at the age of 19, within weeks of claiming 7 for 50 on his first-class debut against the touring New Zealanders.Such a scenario would be virtually unthinkable now, he says, because of the disconnect that has been created between Pakistan’s domestic set-up and the national team, who have been forced, due to security concerns, to play their home matches in the United Arab Emirates for the best part of a decade.”It’s impossible now,” Wasim told ESPNcricinfo. “My fourth first-class game was a Test match [against New Zealand at Auckland], and that won’t happen now. Javed Miandad saw me, then Imran [Khan] met me when I went to play for Pakistan and took me under his wing, then Waqar [Younis] came along and we ruled the world for ten years. But that opportunity isn’t there for youngsters anymore.”Under Misbah’s leadership, Pakistan have risen above their off-field issues to become one of the leading Test teams in the world and they are virtually unbeatable in their home-from-home in the UAE. But, as Misbah pointed out last week, such achievements are hollow if they do not resonate with the fans.”If you are not watching the heroes and the top stars in the world in the grounds and you are not meeting them… without that, it’s really difficult for the Pakistan Cricket Board and it can really hurt them financially also,” he said.Wasim agreed wholeheartedly. “There’s been no cricket in Pakistan for seven or eight years, and cricket is struggling in Pakistan in general,” he said. “Imagine when I was young, I used to go to Lahore’s Gadaffi stadium. I watched England playing there … Bob Willis, Graham Gooch, Mike Gatting … I watched India there in 1978 and 1982, when I was in class ten, with [Sunil] Gavaskar and Kapil Dev … Australia with Allan Border.”They motivated me, but for Pakistan’s budding cricketers, there’s no cricket there. Everything is played in the UAE on bland, placid wickets and nobody is watching cricket there. One-day cricket gets a bit of support, and T20s over three hours, but for Test cricket it is mostly empty stadiums, so it has affected Pakistan cricket big-time.”One potential solution to Pakistan’s disconnect with its fans could lie in the nascent Pakistan Super League, which made a successful debut in the UAE in February 2016, with Wasim’s team, Islamabad United, beating Quetta Gladiators in a sold-out final in Dubai. There have been tentative discussions about introducing some elements of next year’s competition to Pakistan, with potentially the knock-out stages to be held in Karachi or Lahore. However, much would rest with the willingness of the team’s star players to travel to the country. One big name, Andre Russell, recently admitted he would be willing, but “scared” if asked to go.”The PSL was a great success,” said Wasim. “It was the second most watched event in Pakistan television history – 68% of the country watched it, and that is a lot of ratings.”The idea is to gradually take the PSL to Pakistan – maybe the final, or the semi-final – and see what happens. But if the PSL happens in Pakistan, every game you will get 50,000, 80,000 watching from the ground.”Things are better in Pakistan security-wise,” he added. “I live there, and things are better. If teams decide to tour there, then cricket in Pakistan will evolve to a different level.”But the sooner this happens, the better. Not just for Pakistan cricket, but for world cricket, because if Pakistan cricket evolves, it will improve world cricket. The PCB and the Pakistan government are trying, things are getting better, and hopefully soon someone will put their hands up and say ‘let’s tour Pakistan’ and see what happens.”

Celtic’s £480-p/w Teen Is The "Real Deal"

Scottish champions Celtic endured a day to forget in Saturday's Old Firm derby away to bitter rivals Rangers, with the treble hopefuls suffering a disappointing 3-0 defeat to slip to just their second league loss of the campaign.

While the result ultimately matters little in the grand scheme of things with the title having already been wrapped up by the Parkhead outfit, manager Ange Postecoglou will still have been deeply frustrated to see his side produce such an uncharacteristically poor display.

Among those to have perhaps let the side down was summer signing, Alexandro Bernabei, with the promising Argentine having formed part of what was a rather shaky, second-string backline, in the absence of the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Alistair Johnston and Greg Taylor.

With the latter man dropping to the bench, Bernabei had been afforded a rare chance to impress at Ibrox, albeit with the £3.75m addition ultimately looking 'uncomfortable' and 'unsettled' throughout, as per Football Scotland's Mark Hendry, having notably lost possession on 27 occasions as a marker of his woes.

As ex-Hoops star Kris Commons noted in his Daily Mail column following the match – as per The Scotsman – the 22-year-old has proven a 'disappointing signing' thus far, having been unable to dislodge Taylor as the first-choice pick.

Although the former Lanus man still has time on his side to turn things around in Glasgow, the 5 foot 7 speedster should perhaps be wary of sliding down the pecking order even further amid his recent struggles, particularly with teenage sensation, Matthew Anderson, having been tipped to make his mark on the first-team sooner rather than later.

Who is Celtic's Matthew Anderson?

The exciting 19-year-old has only recently come to wider attention after receiving notable praise from Postecoglou back in January, with the Greek-Aussie stating that the club have "high hopes" for the young left-back, following the news that he had signed a new contract extension at the club until 2025.

The former Yokohama F Marinos boss also claimed at the time that the youth starlet was among those who "over the course of the next sort of six to 12 months" will "start to make an impact at first-team level."

A chance to impress in the senior ranks has yet to emerge for the 'B' team skipper, although Anderson can take encouragement from the recent promotions of both Rocco Vata and Ben Summers, with the latter pair showcasing that there is a pathway to the first-team squad.

Celtic's Alexandro Bernabei

The Scotland U21 international has been highly-regarded for a number of years now having previously been the subject of interest from Leeds United back in 2021, with Blantyre Soccer Academy chief Jimmy Whelan stating that the full-back is the "real deal" and "one to watch".

Whelan also went as far as to suggest that the £480-per-week teen "could be like Kieran Tierney" and go on to establish himself at Celtic Park, having thus far shown his quality in the academy with four goals and five assists in 30 games across all fronts this season – a better record than what Bernabei has achieved in the first team (one goal and three assists).

That attacking prowess should well have piqued the interest of Postecoglou, with Anderson potentially not too far away from making a senior bow – particularly following Bernabei's high profile, Ibrox woes.

Man United Linked With "Incredible" £150k-p/w Star

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United are still "internally" discussing Adrien Rabiot as a summer target.

What are the latest MUFC transfer rumours?

The Red Devils moved one step closer to securing Champions League football this weekend as they picked up a 2-0 win in the Premier League against Wolves.

Of course, if they can finish in the top four, that will likely make the club much more attractive for potential signings, as well as freeing up more funds to splash on targets.

And it seems as though, United already have their eye on one player in Rabiot – in fact, they've had their eye on the Juventus man for some time.

Indeed, in a new update shared on his YouTube channel, Romano has now revealed the latest on the club's transfer interest.

He explained (4:37): “This season he's doing incredible things at Juventus as one of the best midfielders in Serie A – Adrien Rabiot, for sure.

"And so, Erik ten Hag saw something in Adrien Rabiot before everyone. So he wanted Rabiot at Manchester United last summer, they had an agreement on the contract details, on the personal terms, with the player's side.

"But what we can say is that Adrien Rabiot remains a player of interest of Manchester United. At the moment, it is not something agreed, it is just a name they appreciate and they've discussed internally.

"Also Adrien Rabiot is asking for some time before making his final decision on the future. He has a contract proposal from Juventus because they want to extend this contract.

"But the dream of Adrien Rabiot, as always said here, is to play in the Premier League. So he wants Premier League move as a priority."

Will Rabiot join Man United?

As Romano alludes to, the Red Devils were heavily linked with Rabiot last summer and Sky Sports even reported a deal had been agreed before it eventually collapsed.

Adrien-Rabiot

Well, now 12 months later, his £150k-p/w contract is set to expire in June and so the Red Devils could pick him up without having to pay a transfer fee.

Seeing as he's had a pretty impressive season – looking like a man "reborn" for France as they made the World Cup final, while also starring for Juventus with the highest average WhoScored rating (7.15) in Serie A this season across the team – it looks as though this could end up being a great deal for Man United.

What's more, if the Premier League really is his "dream" this could be a relatively easy transfer to complete.

Aston Villa Eyeing New Striker Target

Aston Villa are thought to be showing an interest in Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, according to 90min.

What’s the latest news on Villa and Gimenez?

Gimenez will turn 22 years of age later this month and has enjoyed a fine first season with Feyenoord after joining last summer. The Mexico international, now valued at a career-high €9m (£7.9m) by Transfermarkt, has scored 22 times and provided three assists in 41 appearances. His latest goal came on Wednesday evening against Ajax, which led to one media outlet describing him as a player “on fire”.

The left-footed forward appears to be catching the eye and has netted five times in the Europa League, with Feyenoord progressing to the quarter-finals.

90min reporters Lizzy Becherano and Graeme Bailey provided an update regarding Gimenez in the last 48 hours. They stated that Villa, along with Premier League rivals Brentford, Brighton, Leicester and Crystal Palace are all keeping an eye on the forward after his standout season in the Netherlands. The report adds that sides in France, Germany and Italy are also interested, name-checking Lille, Frankfurt and Napoli.

Why do Villa need someone like Gimenez?

Chief executive Christian Purslow is expecting a busy summer in the transfer market ahead of Unai Emery’s first full season in charge in the Midlands, with Ashley Preece stating that ‘a new No.9 to partner Ollie Watkins is at the top of Villa's shopping list’.

Watkins has been enjoying a purple patch in front of goal in recent months, scoring eight of his 11 Premier League goals in the last 10 games. However, despite his fine form, you can see why Emery is looking at bringing in another forward over the coming months. The Spaniard has just Watkins and teenager Jhon Duran as his only centre-forward options at this moment in time, while another youngster in Cameron Archer is out on loan with Middlesbrough.

Therefore, another experienced attacker alongside Watkins could be beneficial after selling Danny Ings in January, with Emery looking to take Villa to the next level. He has worked wonders so far and has taken the club to seventh in the Premier League table, picking up 32 points from his 16 top-flight games in charge.

Villa are still the joint-lowest scorers in the top half alongside Fulham with 39 goals in 29 games, so if the club are to push for European football next season, you’d expect they will need to increase that figure, something Gimenez could help with.

Ten Hag must ditch Man United’s £65k-p/w wage burner

Manchester United have enjoyed an impressive resurgence under manager Erik ten Hag this season, with the Dutchman having already guided the club to Carabao Cup glory, with further honours still potentially on the cards.

One member of the first-team squad who has largely been a bystander to proceedings at Old Trafford of late, however, is academy graduate, Brandon Williams, with the versatile full-back having fallen way down the pecking order in recent years.

While still only 22, it remains to be seen if the Englishman has a future under the former Ajax boss having made just a solitary, five-minute appearance this season in the League Cup triumph over Burnley back in December.

Although injury has hampered the youngster's involvement throughout the campaign, the fact that the Manchester-born menace has rarely featured in the matchday squad when he has been fit is telling of his woes, with it having been no surprise that the defender was seemingly open to a loan exit in January.

Despite such a move having failed to pan out, it would seemingly be wise for Ten Hag to allow the forgotten figure to move on at the end of the season, with it looking unlikely that Williams will be able to dislodge either Tyrell Malacia or Luke Shaw at left-back any time soon.

What salary is Brandon Williams on at Man United?

In truth, if the former England U21 international is now surplus to requirements at the Theatre of Dreams, it should well be something of a priority to move him on come the summer, with United currently having to fork out to pay his reported £65k-per-week salary.

That is a rather hefty amount for a player who appears unlikely to get a look in this term, with Williams set to have cost the club roughly £10.1m in wages by the end of the current campaign, as per FBref.

On recent evidence, that simply appears money wasted due to the defender's lack of action, with the 5 foot 7 man having also struggled somewhat on loan at Norwich City last season, with talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino stating that the full-back had "gone backwards" after his initial promise.

The peripheral dud had previously burst onto the scene under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the 2019/20 campaign, racking up 17 Premier League appearances in that breakthrough season, notably scoring in exquisite fashion in the 3-3 draw away to Sheffield United.

Williams-Man-United-Ten-Hag-Solskjaer-Premier-League

Despite also emerging as a regular fixture in both domestic and European cup competitions that season, Williams was unable to build on that early success in the following campaign, having made just four top-flight outings in total.

The player himself suggested that the lack of crowds during that Covid-19 impacted year was a contributing factor in his struggles, although his subsequent form for the Canaries – where he provided just one assist in 26 league appearances – was also rather uninspiring.

As such, it must surely be time for the former youth star to be moved on by Ten Hag sooner rather than later, with it looking increasingly unlikely that Williams will be able to ever establish himself back in the side.

Wolves: Cunha should be back for Spurs

Wolves have been handed a big boost ahead of their game against Spurs this weekend, with Julen Lopetegui confirming that Matheus Cunha should be available after recovering from injury.

Will Cunha be available for Wolves?

There was a lot of concern for the January signing when he was forced off on a stretcher in the recent 1-1 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

He would miss out entirely when the Old Gold lost out to Liverpool at Anfield in midweek but it now seems as if he could make a surprise comeback against Spurs after returning to training this week.

Liam Keen, who covers Wolves for the Express and Star, provided an update after Lopetegui’s press conference on Friday afternoon, suggesting that the Brazilian is better and “likely to be available” tomorrow.

Since signing from Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window, the 23-year-old has made 10 appearances, in which he has no goals and one assist.

While the new signing has failed to break the striker curse at Molineux, which has seen the likes of Raul Jimenez and Diego Costa go a significant period of time without finding the back of the net in the top flight, he has looked more likely to score, registering 1.9 shots per game in the Premier League thus far.

This ranks him joint-top in Wolves’ squad, which emphasises the positive influence he has had on the Old Gold’s attack, and his willingness to shoot will surely soon be rewarded with a goal.

The “extraordinary” Cunha – as dubbed by Paolo Tramezzani – still has a big part to play in Wolves’ battle for survival in the Premier League, and given the disappointing form of both Jimenez and Costa, it is undoubtedly a boost that Lopetegui’s own striker signing will be back fit on Saturday.

If he can rediscover the form he has shown in the Bundesliga in the past, which saw him hit 13 goals and ten assists in just 40 appearances for Hertha Berlin, then there is no doubt that he can be a positive influence on Wolves’ struggles in front of goal.

Despite improving following the World Cup break, Lopetegui’s side are still ranked as the joint-lowest scorers in the division, so the Spanish manager needs as many attackers fit as possible if he wants to buck that trend.

Therefore, having the Brazilian dynamo fit and available for selection would be a big boost for the head coach and, hopefully, the gem can start to find his best form and begin to deliver goals and assists on a regular basis.

West Ham: Coufal let David Moyes down

West Ham United slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday, meaning they have won just once in the top flight since Christmas, and David Moyes must surely be feeling the pressure with his team dropping into the relegation zone.

A goalless first half had West Ham still in the contest, while a win would have moved them out of the relegation zone, but goals from Emerson Royal and Heung-min Son shattered those ambitions and left Moyes with much to ponder.

Angelo Ogbonna had a game to forget, receiving a team-low Sofascore rating of just 6.1/10; while the Evening Standard’s Malik Ouzia was even more damning, giving him a rating of 4/10 due to his culpability in the two goals that the Irons conceded.

During his 81 minutes on the pitch, the Italian made just one tackle, two clearances and one interception while also taking 33 touches, only two more than goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

The 35-year-old won just one aerial duel all day and generally had a game to forget, although fellow defender Vladimir Coufal also underperformed.

How did Coufal perform against Tottenham Hotspur?

Although given a slightly better rating than Ogbonna from both Sofascore and the Evening Standard’s Ouzia, with 6.8/10 and 5/10 respectively, the right-back still struggled to cope against Spurs.

He completed just 26 of his 50 attempted passes, proving quite wasteful in a game where circulating the ball effectively would have been key to securing a positive result, while he was also ineffective going forwards, succeeding with none of his seven crosses.

He did offer a physical presence, winning 80% of his ground duels and not being dribbled past once, but in losing possession a whopping 35 times, he clearly wasn’t confident on the ball during the match, and this proved costly.

His sloppiness in possession was surprising given his decent form of late, starring in the draw against Newcastle United (7.4 Sofascore rating) and the win over Everton (7.1 from Sofascore), but on a day when a win against Spurs would’ve taken the Irons out of the bottom three, his performance proved to be rather underwhelming.

It wasn’t only the Croatian who let Moyes down yesterday, with the defence as a whole failing to cope with Spurs’ attacks. However, Coufal and co will need to put things right at home to Nottingham Forest next weekend as the Hammers look to secure only their second league win of 2023.

Chelsea had a rare howler with Neymar

Chelsea became a powerhouse over the years following Roman Abramovich’s purchase of the club in 2003 and have been one of the most successful English clubs in recent years.

Between 2011 and 2021, the West Londoners were named the joint highest-ranking club in the last decade alongside Manchester City collecting a number of trophies including two Champions Leagues, two Europa Leagues and two Premier League titles – amassing a whopping 2113 league points during this period.

The Russian owner’s ambitious nature when it came to transfers was the linchpin in the success at Stamford Bridge with no player seen as unobtainable by the hierarchy over his reign – something that Todd Boehly is clearly trying to emulate with his £600m spending spree over the last two transfer windows.

Despite often getting his own way when it came to signing superstars, it didn’t always work out when Chelsea made an approach for a player with a number of huge talents slipping through the net over the years.

Could Chelsea sign Neymar Jr?

One player who has been recently linked with a move to the London club is Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar, but it is not the first time that Chelsea have been in pursuit of the player with Abramovich keen to secure the services of the Brazilian wonder back in 2010 ahead of his move to Barcelona.

The now 31-year-old ace – hailed “exceptional” by former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel – revealed in his autobiography that Chelsea had made a ‘huge transfer bid’ to secure his signature when he was still playing in Brazil for Santos – but was convinced by the late Brazilian legend Pele to stay where he was.

Although – at the time – Neymar decided to stay with Santos, just three years later he made his monumental £49m move to Barcelona which proves that Chelsea dropped the ball in continuing to pursue and convince the player with a move to the Premier League giants following the initial rejection.

Where is Neymar now?

The wide-forward went onto become one of the biggest stars in world football, forming one of the most famous front-line’s in modern football alongside Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi at the Nou Camp – winning two La Liga titles and a Champions League before completing a £200m world-record transfer to PSG in 2017.

Neymar – who has a reported price tag of €90m (£80m) – is renowned as one of the best in the world and it comes as no surprise he is held in such high regard – often put into conversations with Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – as he has scored a whopping 292 goals and registered 187 assists over 491 appearances so far.

There is no doubt that if the Brazil international had joined the Blues back in 2010 it could have been one of the greatest-ever signings in their history, providing even more trophies and success than the club has already seen and would’ve perhaps even still to this day been a source of immeasurable amounts of goal contributions as he continues to thrive in France now.

PSG manager Christophe Galtier has labelled his world-class winger an “artist” when reflecting on his return to form this season after an underwhelming campaign last year:

“He arrived back on time, in great shape, and had worked well beforehand. We wanted to put him in the best possible situation for him to be in the best possible position. He’s an artist, and when he’s on form, you can see that.”

Over the last 12 months, Neymar still ranks in the top 5% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for non-penalty goals, assists, shot-creating actions, passes attempted and progressive passes received, proving he remains one of the most influential and talented players in Europe, showing no signs of slowing down.

With that being said, Abramovich rarely got it wrong at Chelsea but missing out on Neymar could be a decision that haunts the former owner when reflecting on his tenure at the club and it will be interesting to see if Boehly continues to pursue the player in the future.
