Rishabh Pant will feature in the fourth and fifth matches of India A’s one-day series against England Lions on January 29 and 31 in Thiruvananthapuram. The series will also give Ajinkya Rahane, who has been out of favour in ODIs of late, a chance to push his case for World Cup selection. Rahane will captain India A in the first three one-dayers on January 23, 25 and 27.Rahane hasn’t featured in ODIs since the end of India’s tour of South Africa in February 2018. Before that, playing mostly as the reserve opener, he had made 725 runs at an average of 48.33, including a hundred and eight fifties, in his last 17 ODIs.Pant, India’s Test wicketkeeper, is not part of the limited-overs India squads currently touring Australia and New Zealand. According to MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, Pant was “very much” part of India’s World Cup plans, but was left out to give him rest after a grueling Test series in Australia. Pant will effectively have had just over three weeks of rest between the conclusion of the fourth Test in Sydney and the fourth one-dayer against England Lions. Also part of the squad for the first three ODIs is Krunal Pandya, who will later fly out to join the India team in New Zealand ahead of the three-match T20I series, which begins on February 6.The selectors also named a Board President’s XI, which will play a two-day warm-up match against England Lions ahead of the two four-day games that the visitors will play against India A in Wayanad and Mysore. That team will be led by the wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan. The India A and Board President’s XI squads do not feature any players from Karnataka, Saurashtra, Vidarbha and Kerala, the four Ranji Trophy quarter-finalists.India A squad for 1st, 2nd and 3rd one-dayers: Ajinkya Rahane (capt), Anmolpreet Singh, Rituraj Gaekwad, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Ankit Bawne, Ishan Kishan (wk), Krunal Pandya, Axar Patel, Mayank Markande, Jayant Yadav, Siddarth Kaul, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep SainiIndia A squad for 4th and 5th one-dayers: Ankit Bawne (capt), Rituraj Gaekwad, Anmolpreet Singh, Ricky Bhui, Siddhesh Lad, Himmat Singh, Rishabh Pant (wk), Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel, Rahul Chahar, Jayant Yadav, Navdeep Saini, Avesh Khan, Deepak Chahar, Shardul ThakurBoard President’s XI for two-day warm-up game: Ishan Kishan (capt & wk), Akshath Reddy, Dhruv Shorey, Ricky Bhui, Siddhesh Lad, Rinku Singh, Priyam Garg, Saurabh Kumar, Rahul Chahar, Jayant Yadav, Aniket Choudhary, Ankit Rajpoot, Rajesh Mohanty

Sri Lanka collapse against pace after Tom Latham's 264*

Latham became the first New Zealand batsman since Glenn Turner in 1972 to carry his bat through a completed Test innings

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy17-Dec-2018

In six Tests at the Basin Reserve, Sri Lanka have been at the receiving end of four double-hundreds. Martin Crowe, Lou Vincent and Kane Williamson had done it before, and on Monday it was Tom Latham’s turn. Having gone past 200 for the first time in his Test career, he went on to finish on an unbeaten 264, becoming the first New Zealand batsman since Glenn Turner in 1972 to carry his bat through a completed Test innings.Watch LIVE on ESPN+

Latham’s efforts earned New Zealand a 296-run lead and set them up to push hard for an innings win. By the end of day three, that outcome looked even likelier as Sri Lanka, needing to negotiate 14 overs until stumps, lost three top-order wickets to the swing and cunning of Tim Southee and Trent Boult.Boult struck first, straightening one along a stump-to-stump line to have Danushka Gunathilaka lbw playing around his front pad. Then, Southee, having bowled largely outswing until then, got one to nip back in off the surface and breach Dhananjaya de Silva’s defensive gate. When Dimuth Karunaratne fell to a top-edged hook for the second time in the match, Sri Lanka were 13 for 3. Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews saw out the last 5.4 overs of the day, adding only seven runs to Sri Lanka’s score, and the pressure from New Zealand’s quicks will likely remain as intense when play resumes tomorrow morning.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Overshadowed by Williamson for much of the second day, Latham eased himself into the spotlight with a classic Test-match innings that turned a strong position at the start of the day into an unassailable one by the time New Zealand were bowled out. There were three distinct phases to his batting on day three. While quick to put away anything loose, he was largely watchful in the first session, often leaving good-length balls inches wide of off stump, even when Suranga Lakmal was angling them into him from around the wicket. After lunch, as the double-hundred neared, he gathered his runs unobtrusively against well-spread fields, scoring at a strike rate of nearly 56 even while only hitting two boundaries in the session. Then, post-tea, with the lower order for company, he widened his range of shots to score his last 40 runs off only 38 balls. The day began brilliantly for Sri Lanka, with Dimuth Karunaratne’s stunning reflex catch at short leg sending back Ross Taylor in the first over of the morning, fast hands somehow intercepting a full-blooded flick near his left shoulder. That, though, was Sri Lanka’s only success of the session, as Latham and Henry Nicholls settled in calmly on a pitch that had flattened out considerably since the first morning. The only moments of anything approaching panic came when the unflagging Lahiru Kumara found the edges of both batsmen – Latham first, then Nicholls – with his extra bounce in his second spell of the day. The match situation, however, limited the number of catchers Sri Lanka could employ behind the wicket. The first edge flew through the vacant gully region, which prompted Dinesh Chandimal to move his second slip there, and the second edge promptly shot through the newly created gap.Latham, certainly, had earned the right not to have an extra man in the cordon. He was batting on 136 when he played that uncharacteristic jab away from his body, and until then had been inch-perfect with his judgment outside off stump. This didn’t mean Latham didn’t pounce when the quicks overpitched, even marginally. His driving – always meeting the ball right under his eyes, with a punchy, full-faced finish – was a feature of the morning’s play, particularly to the right of mid-off. He kept finding that gap with such regularity that Sri Lanka eventually stationed their extra-cover straighter, almost as an auxiliary mid-off.At the other end, Nicholls carried on the form he had shown during his triumphant tour of the UAE, chugging along at a 60-plus strike rate and looking Latham’s equal at driving off the front foot. His favoured area, however, was straight back past the bowler – three of his boundaries came in that direction, two off the quicks and one after a foray down the wicket to Dilruwan Perera’s offspin. There was also a withering pull shot off Kumara, a strong roll of the wrists ensuring the ball stayed down despite being met above shoulder height.Nicholls fell near the start of the second session, soon after reaching his half-century, holing out to long-on while trying to go after Dilruwan. Kumara then sent back BJ Watling for a duck with a well-directed short ball that the batsman popped to the keeper, ducking awkwardly with eyes off the ball. The fifth-wicket stand between Watling and Latham was the first sub-50 partnership of the innings.Sri Lanka could have had another soon after when Colin de Grandhomme edged a flashing drive off Dilruwan, but Karunaratne didn’t react quickly enough at gully as the ball flew past his left hand. De Grandhomme would go on to clatter 49 off 53 balls, pulling Kasun Rajitha for three big sixes, and adding 73 at close to five an over with Latham.

De Kock, Morris need to step up before the World Cup – Graeme Smith

The former South Africa captain also said Test cricket would be safe till Virat Kohli kept it as his priority

Sreshth Shah at Eden Gardens03-Nov-2018

Associated Press

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith is disappointed with the career graphs of his two countrymen Quinton de Kock and Chris Morris. Smith also praised India, and the captain Virat Kohli, on their recent away performances, while delivering the second annual Jagmohan Dalmiya Lecture at Eden Gardens on Friday. While Smith stated wicketkeeper-batsman de Kock’s career was “stagnating” after a rollicking start when he smacked three centuries in a row before he had played 20 ODIs, he wondered if it was a “mental thing” or a “heart thing” that was missing from Morris’ development as one of the world’s best allrounders.”Recently, our bowlers have done well,” Smith said while expressing where the strength in the current South African team lay. “We hope to squeeze a few more years out of [Dale] Steyn as well, but it’s the batting department that worries me. Quinton de Kock – I feel he is stagnating in his career. I would’ve liked to see him grow into the top echelons like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.”And also Chris Morris. He’s a guy who’s not quite lived up to his expectations. Whether it’s a mental thing or a heart thing, I don’t know. But I really want them to step up ahead of the 2019 World Cup.”Since January 2017, de Kock has scored 1223 runs in 26 ODIs with two hundreds and nine half-centuries. His average since then has been 48.92 – compared to his career average of 45.25 – but it’s his potential that remains unfulfilled which has bothered Smith. In the same period, the people who Smith compared de Kock to, average 72.59 (Rohit) and 95.07 (Kohli) in ODIs, in 40 innings each.Morris, 31, made his international debut in December 2012, but in the last six years has played four Tests, 34 ODIs and 17 T20Is. His search for extra speed during South Africa’s tour of England in 2017 caused a back injury that sidelined him for four months. He injured his back once again in April 2018, during the IPL while representing Delhi Daredevils, and had to pull out of the tournament after just four games. Since then, Morris has also missed South Africa’s contests with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. In 19 ODIs since January 2017, he has taken just 19 wickets at an average of almost 42. His high score in the period is only 37, with an average of 20.08.Morris recently returned to the field after five months to represent Titans in first-class matches and T20s. In two four-day games, Morris bowled 56 overs and took 12 wickets at 16.33, but could not impress as much with the bat. He was soon brought back in the limited-overs sides for the Australia tour.Smith also praised the performances of India’s Test team in tough conditions on away tours this year. There was no lack in ability in the Indian camp, according to Smith, but he felt that the team lost key moments or took decisions that went against them during the tours of South Africa and England, eventually hurting the overall Test results. Smith, however, backed India to win the Test series in Australia if they took the “right” decisions.Getty Images

“Across the board, India’s seam attack is one of the best one can see,” he said. “And if India toured South Africa today, they’d be certainly outstanding. We know how dominant India can be at home, and they would’ve been disappointed not winning a Test series in South Africa and England, because – from a bowling and batting perspective – the ability is there. India can challenge teams away, and hopefully those two tours of South Africa and England have given them some lessons to take into Australia.”It’s not an ability thing. If the captain and coach get the right combination, I expect India to be very successful in Australia. Lessons learnt, the availability of key players and making better decisions during key moments – like the decision to drop Ajinkya Rahane for the Cape Town Test. If they do those right, they’ll certainly win in Australia.”Smith also addressed the everlasting debate on the health of Test cricket. He said that Test cricket needed the game’s superstars to embrace the format for it to survive. Alluding to Kohli’s distinct desire to excel in Test cricket, Smith said that as long as the India captain remained interested in the longest format, the format will remain sheltered.”Kohli is an asset for Test cricket,” Smith said. “The world game is lacking a huge amount of superstars. We’ve seen AB [de Villiers] retire and yes, there are some up and coming players who could become the Souravs, Laras or Azharuddins, but I think Virat is that guy.”Virat wants to excel in Tests, and he’s doing well to keep Test cricket relevant in a country which loves T20s and the IPL. As long as Virat keeps Test cricket as a top priority, the format will be safe.”The lecture, named in honour of the former Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president who also served as BCCI president and the ICC president, has been a brainchild of Sourav Ganguly, the current CAB president. Ganguly’s “desire” to have an annual lecture in the name of one of India’s greatest cricket administrators came into effect last year when Kapil Dev, India’s first World Cup winning captain, delivered the inaugural lecture. The event on Friday also featured a panel discussion with some protagonists of the 1993 Hero Cup, whose final was held almost exactly 25 years ago at Eden Gardens where Anil Kumble’s 6 for 12 helped India trounce West Indies in dramatic fashion. Two members of that West Indies squad – Brian Lara and Carl Hooper – and Mohammad Azharuddin joined Ganguly and India’s T20 captain Rohit Sharma after Smith’s lecture to take part in a light-hearted discussion. Ganguly also promised that the lecture would continue annually, most likely just before an international game in Kolkata.India play West Indies on November 4 at Eden Gardens for the first T20I before the series moves to Lucknow and Chennai to end the tour.

Boost for Kompany: "Fantastic" Burnley ace back from injury in new update

Burnley and manager Vincent Kompany have been handed a welcome boost to one of their injured players this week, according to reports.

Burnley injury news…

The Clarets haven’t had the best of starts to the Premier League campaign, currently sitting in the relegation zone with just one victory in nine top flight fixtures. Most recently, Kompany’s side made the trip to Brentford and fell to a 3-0 defeat, however, they were once again without a number of first team players who have been missing had a due to injury.

Michael Obafemi, who made his move to Turf Moor permanent over the summer, has been missing since June where he suffered a serious hamstring injury while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland. He featured 14 times for the Clarets last season on loan from Swansea City, and it looks as if his first appearance as a permanent Burnley player could be just around the corner following a positive development.

Reporter Matt Scrafton of the Burnley Express shared a Michael Obafemi injury update on Tuesday, stating the forward has now returned to make his first appearance for the U21 side in what represents a boost for club, player and manager.

Obafemi featured in a derby clash against Blackburn Rovers at the Burnley Training Centre alongside fellow first-team players Lawrence Vigouroux, CJ Egan-Riley, Han-Noah Massengo and Darko Churlinov, with Churlinov and Will Hugill scoring in a 2-0 Central League Cup win.

How good is Michael Obafemi?

Obafemi may have made 14 appearances for Burnley last season, however, when it comes to minutes played, the forward has only featured for under 300 minutes in a Burnley shirt. (Michael Obafemi stats – Transfermarkt)

He has been hailed as “fantastic” by Russell Martin while at Swansea, with the now Southampton boss saying that Obafemi’s “pace is something that really scares opponents”. Meanwhile, Kompany also appears to be a fan of the forward, saying after signing Obafemi on loan at the beginning of the year:

“We have done this transfer in a way that is smart for us as a club. There is a big upside and little risk.”

Therefore, with Burnley struggling for goals in the Premier League, scoring just seven goals in nine games so far, having Obafemi back from injury could be the boost they need heading into the New Year, and it’ll be interesting to see when he is fully fit to feature in a first team squad.

Taunton pitch 'below average verging on poor' – Lancashire's Paul Allott

Lancashire have accused Somerset of producing a pitch that is “below average verging on poor” after 22 wickets fell on the first day of their Championship match at Taunton

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Sep-2018Lancashire have accused Somerset of producing a pitch that was “below average verging on poor” after 22 wickets fell on the first day of their Championship match at Taunton.Questions about the quality of the surface could leave Somerset open to a points penalty, as it is less than 12 months since they were reprimanded by the ECB for producing a “below average” pitch for their final game of the 2017 season. With Somerset second in Division One and attempting to keep pace with leaders Surrey, any deduction would likely have an impact on the title race. The result at Taunton could also have repercussions at the other end of the table. Lancashire went into the match in fifth, but only nine points ahead of bottom-placed Worcestershire, having played a game more.Although Paul Allott, Lancashire’s director of cricket, admitted that there had been “indifferent batting” on both sides, he referred directly to ECB regulations when interviewed on BBC Radio Lancashire. Having asked for and won a toss, Lancashire chose to bat only to be dismissed for 99, left-arm spinner Jack Leach taking 5 for 28; Somerset were then bowled out for 192, and Lancashire lost two more wickets before the close, both to Leach.”It’s the beginning of day two, so the game is still fully in progress,” Allott said. “And I’d just like to start by quoting the ECB pitch regulations.”The precursor to these is quite clear, it says for the purpose of maintaining the highest standard of pitches in all matches, the relevant provision is the following: ‘Each county shall actively seek to prepare the best quality cricket pitch that it can for the match that it is staging.’ And I firmly believe that that is not the best possible pitch that could have been prepared for this game”It’s disappointing because obviously the situation for both teams is an intriguing one, it’s hugely important for Somerset and for Lancashire. Somerset looking to put pressure on the leaders and try and win the County Championship and Lancashire obviously in a dogfight to avoid relegation.”I will say that yesterday even though 22 wickets fell there was some indifferent batting and that Somerset overall edged us in performance. But to be perfectly honest that pitch is below average verging on poor in my view. It looks like a fifth day Test match pitch, it’s worn, it’s pitted and there are some areas in it that are hugely conducive for spin bowling.”Paul Allott, Lancashire’s director of cricket, discusses the Taunton pitch with Cricket Liaison Officer Dean Cosker•Getty Images

After the first day, Jason Kerr, Somerset’s head coach, said he was not worried about a pitch penalty and suggested many of the wickets had gone down as a result of “very bad cricket”. He added: “I have not spoken to the Cricket Liaison Officer and probably won’t do so until the end of the game, but I don’t foresee a problem.”Any decision about the state of the pitch will rest with Dean Cosker, the former Glamorgan spinner who is the CLO present at Taunton, after discussion with the standing umpires, Paul Baldwin and Jeremy Lloyds. However, the threat of a penalty hangs over Somerset, after they were marked down for the pitch provided for their match against Middlesex last year – a relegation decider in which Somerset’s 231-run victory helped preserve Division One status by a single point.”I’ve no issue with what Jason Kerr says, it’s not my prerogative to agree or disagree with him,” Allott said. “All I can say is that in my view that pitch is not the best that could have been prepared and it’s disappointing to come all this way down to Taunton and be confronted with those conditions in such an important game.”

Chelsea star now "set to leave" in January as club begin replacement search

It is believed that another Chelsea star is "set to leave" in the January transfer window, and the Blues are already searching for his replacement.

Chelsea players leaving in 2024

Stamford Bridge transfer chiefs Todd Boehly, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley have already overseen a major clearout this year, with Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi coming as the Chelsea players sold or loaned out in 2023.

Those exits raised around £230 million in total and helped to balance the books after a summer of serial spending. However, Chelsea want to sign a striker and are plotting further incomings for manager Mauricio Pochettino next year, meaning yet more of the Argentine's squad could be forced out the door. According to recent reports, there are a few candidates already.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Veteran defender Thiago Silva could leave Chelsea as his contract expires next summer, while left-back Marc Cucurella may also depart. Centre-back Trevoh Chalobah is "90%" likely to quit Chelsea too, according to reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Left-back Ian Maatsen, whose current deal expires in 2025, was another name mentioned but those links died down when Chelsea took up the option to extend his contract by an additional 12 months. However, it appears murmurs of a departure for the Dutchman have resurfaced this week.

Ian Maatsen "set to leave" in January

Having spent the 2022/2023 season on loan at Burnley, where he played a heavy hand in their promotion to the Premier League, Maatsen has been favoured by Pochettino on occasion this campaign. While his limits have been somewhat limited, the left-back's featured over six league appearances in total, with Chelsea's manager heaping praise on Maatsen for his intelligence.

"I am so happy with him," said Pochettino in a recent press conference.

"He is a player that can play in different positions. He has quality, he understands the game, and he is such a clever player. So far, he is in my plan, yes. I am so pleased with him, as I’ve said, because of his attitude, commitment and his understanding of the game."

Regardless, TEAMtalk now suggest that his future appears far away from west London. According to their information, Maatsen is "set to leave" Chelsea in the winter window. Burnley, Liverpool and Man City are named as suitors for the versatile 21-year-old, with Boehly and co already beginning the search for his replacement in January. Indeed, it is believed Inter Milan wing-back Federico Dimarco and Boca Juniours starlet Valentin Barco lead a two-man shortlist to succeed Maatsen.

The latter can actually sign a pre-contract in two months, as he is in the last year of his current deal with Boca Juniours. As such, it is believed Chelsea are ready to approach him over such a deal soon, while Dimarco comes as an enticing option given his form for the Nerazzurri. The Italian has even scored and bagged three assists in Serie A.

Chelsea: Blues make offer to sign "spectacular" talent; they’ve had a reply

Chelsea are already looking to conduct some business ahead of the January transfer window and have received a reply to an offer for a talented ace, according to reports.

What's the latest news involving Chelsea?

Cited by The Metro, Mauricio Pochettino singled out Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer for special praise following his contribution in their 4-1 victory over Burnley on Saturday in the Premier League, saying: "He is a very talented player and he has the quality and he surprised me when I arrived, because it was the day before the transfer window closed. the way the he reads the situations and what the team needs in every situation, he can be the player who can link with his team-mates. He is still very very young but with great personality and he has the talent and the quality which we saw today."

Meanwhile, speaking on ESPN, pundit Steve Nicol claimed that Raheem Sterling's positive performance in the victory over Burnley was driven by his frustration at being snubbed by England boss Gareth Southgate for the Three Lions' upcoming double-header against Australia and Italy. Nicol said:

"I think it’s pretty straightforward what’s sparking this: not getting picked for England. I mean, it’s one thing not to be picked; it’s another thing when it’s all over the papers, it’s all over the media. And quite frankly, from the player’s point of view, it’s a little bit embarrassing, particularly when you were not just a regular in the England squad but an absolute regular starter for your country. So that absolutely fuelled his flame and he produced."

The 28-year-old has made a relatively positive impact for Chelsea in 2023/24, registering three goals and one assist in his opening nine appearances across all competitions. The club now enter the international break and various players will fly out to represent their respective countries before they return to action against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on October 21st.

Chelsea transfer news – Blues make Luis Guilherme offer

Journalist Jorge Nicola shared a Chelsea transfer update, relayed by Simon Phillips, claiming the Blues have made an offer to sign Palmeiras midfielder Luis Guilherme in the region of €35 million, which was subsequently rejected by the Brazilian giants, who are seeking to recoup a higher fee for the 17-year-old.

Bayern Munich have also been knocked back in their pursuit of the midfield talent, who has previously been labelled "spectacular" in the media.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has indicated on his YouTube channel that Manchester United are also keen on the midfielder and have scouted him in recent weeks. Guilherme has made 22 appearances for Palmeiras across all competitions since making his breakthrough at senior level, though he has yet to register a goal or assist.

Placing an emphasis on securing young talent has become a key part of Todd Boehly's approach during his tenure at Stamford Bridge, and it looks as if the Blues have plans to secure another star of the future; however, by the looks of tings, they will need to up their bid for Guilherme if they are to make his arrival a reality.
