Arsenal 21 y/o Wanted By German And English Clubs

Journalist Charles Watts has revealed that young Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is likely to leave this summer having "caught the attention" of clubs in England and Germany.

Who will Arsenal sell this summer?

Mikel Arteta and co will likely be set for a busy summer with a number of new incomings expected. For instance, £200m might be needed to land targets Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo.

Of course, though, some exits will happen too and Granit Xhaka is one player who could bring in some money – around £13m to be exact – as he looks set to join Bayer Leverkusen.

The Premier League club will offload over lower-profile players too, and it seems as though 21-year-old goalkeeper Okonkwo could be on the list of summer departures.

Indeed, when talking on his YouTube channel, the journalist how the youngster has caught the eye both at home and abroad with some impressive loan spells.

He explained (5:40): "Arthur Okonkwo, obviously the very young goalkeeper at Arsenal – very highly rated.

"My understanding is there's lots of interest in him this summer. A move looks very likely, he's had a very good loan spell – two very good loan spells in fact.

He added (6:27): "He's caught the attention of a lot of clubs, both in England, but abroad as well, especially in Germany; I believe there's lots of interest in him. he's only got a year left on his contract."

Who is Arthur Okonkwo?

Last summer, the goalkeeper went on loan to Crewe Alexandra before then heading to Austria in January to finish the campaign with Sturm Graz.

He evidently impressed a great deal in that period as Watts now reports he has suitors in both countries ahead of a possible exit from Arsenal.

He played 26 times for the League Two side, keeping 10 clean sheets while in the Austrian Football Bundesliga, he has played 14 games, losing just four times and winning the rest with four clean sheets to his name too.

An England youth international at under-18 level (who can also present Nigeria), Okonkwo has been at the club since joining the Hale End Academy as an eight-year-old but has yet to make a competitive senior appearance for the Gunners (but has played in pres-eason matches).

Aaron Ramsdale and Mikel Arteta

With Aaron Ramsdale and Matt Turner ahead of him in the pecking order though, he might feel as though his career will be better off if he leaves this summer with the promise of regular minutes at a new club.

Mahmud conduit between players and coach – Hassan

BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said the decision to include Bangladesh team manager Khaled Mahmud in the selection committee was a result of lack of communication between the players and coach Chandika Hathurusingha

Mohammad Isam22-Jun-2016

‘The only person who could have a problem with the manager in this committee is the captain. But he is fine with it, so why does the selector have a problem with it?’ – BCB president Nazmul Hassan•BCB

BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said the decision to include Bangladesh team manager Khaled Mahmud in the selection committee was a result of lack of communication between the players and coach Chandika Hathurusingha. In a heated press conference in Mirpur on Wednesday, Hassan said he was tired of explaining why he changed the selection structure from a three-member to a six-member committee.Explaining the reason behind the manager’s inclusion, Hassan mentioned an incident during the World T20, when he attended a team meeting and found the Bangladesh players not challenging Hathurusingha. He said the players often used Mahmud as their envoy to push for suggestions regarding team selection but they were not approaching Hathurusingha directly.Hassan said Mahmud, after informing him of these suggestions, would relay the message to Hathurusingha. To relieve himself of getting too involved in selection matters, Hassan has included Mahmud in the selection committee, where he will act as the captains’ representative.”I have to explain this out of disappointment,” Hassan said. “You know that I am very much involved with the players. During the World Cup and the World T20, I attended the team meetings. I saw there that the coach gives a strategic plan for every aspect of the match, in a lot of detail.”Unfortunately, I saw that our players didn’t challenge the coach but when I got out of their meeting room, couple of the players walked out with me. They told me that there has to be some changes made, mainly about selection. I asked them, ‘Why didn’t you tell him in the meeting?’ But they don’t get into any argument with the coach, whether it is the captain or the other players.”When I don’t attend these meetings, they communicate via the manager Sujon [Mahmud], who conveys it to me and I have to tell the coach. I don’t want to be involved in these things. So I thought that I should have lesser involvement in these matters. We can’t run things in this way so this is why I have included the manager in the selection committee. The only person who could have a problem with the manager in this committee is the captain. But he is fine with it, so why does the selector have a problem with it?”It is extremely rare for a BCB president to reveal such details from within the Bangladesh dressing room. Hathurusingha has been hailed as instrumental to the team’s successes in 2015, with many players suggesting he has given them freedom to express themselves in every match situation. While Hathurusingha has had public fallings-out with the chief selector Faruque Ahmed and former cricket operations chairman Naimur Rahman, he has never publicly criticised any Bangladesh player. Nor has any player spoken of communication difficulties with Hathurusingha. When contacted, a number of Bangladesh players refused to comment on the board president taking about the team’s private matters. Hassan admitted he wasn’t supposed to reveal such information in a press conference but he succumbed to the continuous questioning about Mahmud’s inclusion in the revamped selection committee.”Is it a good thing that I just said that our captains and players are scared of the coach?” Hassan said. “This news will now spread around the world but you won’t leave me alone until I say all these things.”

Chris Kavanagh Booed As Newcastle Lose 2-0

Journalist Ciaran Kelly has noted that the entire Newcastle United home crowd booed referee Chris Kavanagh after the full-time whistle against Arsenal.

What's the latest on Arsenal and Newcastle United?

With both teams inside the top three coming into the encounter, it wasn't a surprise to see the Premier League game played with real intensity and competitiveness.

Indeed, the Magpies are still fighting to confirm Champions League qualification while the Gunners are working to keep their title hopes alive.

In the end, Arsenal managed to outclass Eddie Howe and co as they took their chances and won the game 2-0 thanks to a fine effort from Martin Odegaard and then an own goal from Fabian Schar.

Understandably, the St James' Park faithful weren't happy with the result, but it seems they were also left annoyed by Kavanagh's refereeing performance.

Indeed, reporting from the stadium, journalist Kelly wrote on Twitter: "Boos from all four corners as referee Chris Kavanagh makes his way off at full-time.

"Nufc just didn't take their chances in a niggly, feisty game. Stay in third and remain three points clear of Liverpool with a game in hand. Leeds away next.

How did Chris Kavanagh do against Newcastle?

Perhaps the most obvious contentious issue was when

VAR helped the referee to overturn a penalty early on in the game.

Kavanagh had actually pointed to the spot but replays showed that the possible handball by Jakub Kiwior had actually hit his thigh.

No doubt it would have annoyed fans to see this decision changed and with fans not able to get replays of the incident in the game this could explain the boos at full-time.

The home crowd were also likely angered by Arsenal's dark arts as well as the Gunners looked to waste time and hold on to the three points late on in the affair.

Arsenal's Jorginho in action with Newcastle United's Callum Wilson

Football writer Henry Winter explained: "AFC time-wasting/game-management annoying #NUFC players and fans. Burn complaining to fourth official Taylor. Botman and Joelinton complaining to ref Kavanagh. Trippier's fuse burning."

It's interesting the perspectives different viewers can have on the same game of football, however, as journalist Charles Watts noted that Arsenal were "kicked" throughout the game.

Indeed, he said on Twitter: "That's a really, really fantastic win by Arsenal. That was a hell of a game. They were kicked all over the place and they stood up to it. Proper performance."

Newcastle fans can complain all the like but they shouldn't forget that they have won many points this season – including one at the Emirates – by employing the "dark arts" too.

And in the end, the away team just had more quality to pick up the win.

£65k-p/w Star Booed Brutally By Tottenham Fans

Journalist Alasdair Gold has claimed it was "uncomfortable to watch" as Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez was booed by his own supporters in the club's most recent game.

What's the latest on Davinson Sanchez and Spurs?

While it hasn't exactly been a smooth season for Spurs, a spot in the Champions League is certainly still on the cards.

Indeed, the north London club played host to Bournemouth in the Premier League with plenty to play for as the race for a place in the top four heats up.

And Tottenham got off to a good start as Son Heung-min scored the opener after good work from Ivan Perisic. Before halftime, however, the Cherries had levelled things up thanks to Matias Vina.

That goal came in the 38th minute only three minutes after Sanchez came on for the injured Clement Lenglet. To make things worse, the 65k-per-week star inadvertently prodded the ball through to Dominic Solanke as he raced through on goal to give Bournemouth a 2-1 lead.

In the aftermath of the goal, the Spurs fans booed Sanchez in brutal fashion, as noted by Gold on Twitter.

He wrote: "Boos from around the stadium for Davinson Sanchez when he next touches the ball after the kick-off, and again soon after. That was uncomfortable to watch."

Why was Sanchez booed by Spurs fans?

Journalist Charlie Eccleshare also noted this toxic atmosphere and actually condemned it, writing: "Sanchez getting booed. Really harsh."

Perhaps out of pity, or maybe frustration, interim manager Christian Stellini made things even more embarrassing for the centre-back as he subbed him off in the 58th minute, meaning he lasted just 23 minutes.

Sadly, as Sanchez walked off the field, his departure was met with huge jeers and cheers from the home crowd as he cut a sorry figure.

In his brief spell on the pitch, he picked up a lowly 6.2 rating (as per Sofascore) and was dribbled past one. Even so, with his 21 touches he didn't actually do that poorly. Indeed, the defender completed 16/18 passes, lost the ball twice, won two of three attempted ground duels.

However, it seems as though he just didn't pass the eye test for the fans in the fans making up the home crowd, with journalist Kevin Palmer calling him "one of their most expensive mistakes" and simply a "dreadful defender".

To be fair, you can see why some supports may have lost patience. After all, Spurs have conceded inside the first 15 minutes on the last three occasions Sanchez has been substituted on in the Premier League, according to OptaJoe (via LastWordOnSpurs),

Still, the crowd reaction certainly was brutal.

Tottenham manager news: Ryan Sessegnon would be reborn under 52 y/o

Tottenham Hotspur have recently begun the search for their next manager as Antonio Conte's days are numbered in north London…

What's the latest Tottenham manager news?

The Italian is likely to depart the Lilywhites at the end of his contract in June, though his recent outbursts could lead to that happening sooner rather than later.

Plenty of names have been linked to the potential vacancy, including former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and another ex-Chelsea manager in Thomas Tuchel.

However, according to the Daily Mirror's chief football writer John Cross, unemployed Luis Enrique, who is reportedly keen to manage in England, is likely to be sporting director Fabio Paratici's leading choice to take over from Conte.

Who could benefit from Luis Enrique at Tottenham?

The 52-year-old is currently out of work after he stepped down from his role at Spain after Morocco beat his side in the last-16 of the World Cup in December 2022.

Previously in charge of FC Barcelona, the Gijon-born tactician won two LaLiga titles, three Copa del Reys and a Champions League during his three-year tenure at the Nou Camp, where he also graced the pitch as a player.

Enrique – once hailed as "remarkable" by Arsene Wenger – is undoubtedly the best manager available right now and his arrival at Hotspur Way could be wonderful news for a player like Ryan Sessegnon, who should have evolved in Conte's wing-back system – but hasn't.

Tried-and-tested veteran Ivan Perisic has often gotten the nod instead, given the pair enjoyed plenty of success together at Inter Milan, but he has shown worrying signs of his age in recent months, meaning that a departure alongside Conte should ultimately happen in the near future.

Enrique's favoured system is a wide and attacking 4-3-3 – the antithesis of the Italian's defensively-minded philosophy – and Sessegnon could act as his next Jordi Alba, who provided six goal contributions across 38 appearances as they won LaLiga and the Champions League.

Tottenham paid Fulham around £25m for the 22-year-old back in August 2019 but are yet to fully see him live up to that price tag, with the wing-back managing just two goals and two assists in the Premier League across the last 18 months.

Despite being hailed as a "huge talent" by his former Cottagers teammate Stefan Johansen, Sessegnon is yet to truly get a sustained chance in the Spurs XI and the arrival of Enrique could not only see him get that but it may also be what he needs to finally fulfil his potential.

His pace and dynamism will help in playing a high back line, whilst his weaknesses of holding onto the ball and discipline will not be as exposed as Enrique will prioritise link-up play over him being the main creator of this team, unlike with Conte, where the wing-backs are crucial to his machine.

Therefore, if Paratici does get his way, it seems as if Sessegnon should be a very happy man heading into next season, given the evidence above.

West Ham: Emerson has been a disaster

West Ham were clearly in need of a new left-back in the summer but the signing of Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea looks to have been a huge waste of money.

After Aaron Cresswell’s performances towards the end of last season became costly, with the experienced defender receiving red cards in vital Europa League ties against Olympique Lyon and Eintracht Frankfurt, it became clear that David Moyes needed cover in that position.

How much has Emerson cost West Ham?

Instead of searching for a young talent who could be relied upon to be the long-term heir to the 33-year-old Cresswell, the Hammers instead spent £13m to bring 28-year-old Chelsea flop Emerson Palmieri to the London Stadium.

The Italy international had been with the Blues since January 2018, when he signed from Roma, but would make just 71 appearances in more than four years at Stamford Bridge.

He would enjoy a loan spell at Lyon last season, averaging a strong 6.91 rating from WhoScored for his performances in Ligue 1 and that was clearly enough to convince Moyes that he was worth another shot in the Premier League.

However, he has managed just 13 appearances in the top flight so far this campaign and has averaged a woeful 6.39 rating from WhoScored, which ranks him as the joint-16th best performer at the London Stadium.

The full-back recovered his form somewhat with strong displays against Chelsea and Newcastle recently, notably enjoying ‘one of his best games in a West Ham shirt’ against his former employers in the words of Jonty Colman.

Sadly, he was back to his worst on Saturday as the Hammers were trounced 4-0 at Brighton, in a game which sums up how much the east London outfit have regressed from previous campaigns under Moyes.

Club legend Carlton Cole didn’t hold back in his criticism of the left-back for his role in FCSB’s opening goal in West Ham’s 3-1 win earlier this season.

He said on BT Sport (via Read West Ham): “This is schoolboy stuff. He doesn’t even look once.”

Considering a 33-year-old Cresswell has been Moyes’ first choice for much of this season, it seems clear that the Scottish manager doesn’t trust Emerson to be a regular in this Irons side.

The former Roma man earns a remarkable £95k-per-week at the London Stadium, which means since his signing in August, the Hammers have spent £2,185,000 on the 28-year-old, which takes his overall tally to more than £15m when you factor in his transfer fee.

Unless Emerson can drastically improve his form at West Ham, he will surely go down as another transfer disaster by the Hammers, with that £15m going well and truly down the drain.

Leeds potentially approach Pereira

Flamengo manager Vitor Pereira has emerged as a potential replacement for Jesse Marsch as Leeds United boss, according to a new rumour.

The Lowdown: Leeds on the lookout

It is now approaching two weeks since Marsch was relieved of his duties at Elland Road, with a string of poor results and performance ultimately leading to his demise.

Since then, Leeds have been linked with a number of individuals, from Marcelo Bielsa to Carlos Corberan, but no appointment has been made yet.

Michael Skubala has stepped in as interim manager for the time being but it remains to be seen how long he will be in charge for.

The Latest: Pereira emerges as candidate

According to Mundo Rubro Negro [via Sport Witness], Pereira could possibly be on Leeds’ radar, with an ‘enquiry from an English club’ received.

The Whites and Southampton are both without a manager currently, which could seemingly point towards them being the club in question, and the Flamengo boss could ‘ask to leave’ because he has a ‘dream of training in the Premier League’.

The Verdict: Interesting option for Whites

Pereira could be an intriguing appointment by Leeds if they end up being the club to have enquired about him, with the 54-year-old only joining Flamengo last month.

[freshpress-quiz id=“418869″]

He has tasted plenty of success in his career, winning two Primeira Liga titles with Porto, one Greek title with Olympiakos and a Chinese Super League with Shanghai Port – so he has undoubted pedigree.

While Skubala may be able to fill a void for the time being, bringing in someone with Pereira’s experience and nous could ultimately make the difference between Leeds staying in the Premier League or not.

Newcastle could ditch ASM for Kvaratskhelia

Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw against West Ham United on Saturday evening proved a particularly frustrating affair for fleet-footed Frenchman Allan Saint-Maximin, with the 25-year-old having seen his involvement limited on the flanks.

The former Nice dynamo had been afforded a rare starting berth as Joelinton dropped back into a midfield role to cover for the suspended Bruno Guimaraes, although the pacy winger failed to truly take his chance, having had a ‘disappointing night’ according to the Chronicle’s Lee Ryder.

While Magpies boss Eddie Howe admitted that his side “didn’t get him the ball enough”, Saint-Maximin struggled when he was in possession, as he lost the ball on 13 occasions from his 34 touches and failed to provide a single key pass.

That outing encapsulated what has been a difficult campaign so far for the £70k-per-week wing wizard, who has just one goal and three assists to his name in 18 appearances in all competitions, having made only five top-flight starts.

Those woes have followed claims made during the summer that the former Monaco ace could be allowed to depart Newcastle for a fee of around £50m, while he was subsequently linked with a move to AC Milan last month.

Any potential departure for the 5 foot 8 speedster could well be hastened come the end of the season should the Tynesiders be able to secure a suitable upgrade, with recent reports having claimed that one such target could well be Napoli sensation Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

That’s according to CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs (via his Twitter space), as he revealed that Newcastle “have looked” at the 21-year-old amid his scintillating start to life with the runaway Serie A leaders.

This follows a 90min report in December which suggested that the Magpies were one of the clubs showing an interest in the Georgian dynamo, albeit with the Azzurri said to be holding out for more than £100m if they are to cash in any time soon.

Despite only arriving at his current club last summer, the 19-cap ace has already scored eight goals and provided nine assists in just 17 league games this season, proving to be something of a “revelation” according to The Athletic’s James Horncastle.

Not only is that return of goal contributions far greater than the aforementioned Saint-Maximin, Kvaratskhelia also appears to offer far more out of possession. He has averaged 1.4 tackles per game this season, in contrast to just 0.4 per game for the current Newcastle forward.

Equally, while the latter has been a rather underwhelming performer this season with a Sofascore match rating of just 6.85 in the Premier League, the Napoli starlet has a far greater average of 7.38 per game this term.

Kvaratskhelia’s superior quality is also showcased by the fact that he ranks in the top 1% among his European positional peers for assists and in the top 11% for non-penalty goals, while Saint-Maximin ranks in just the top 19% and the bottom 5% respectively in that regard.

As such, bringing in the “untamed” and “instinctive” Georgian – as described by New York Times correspondent Rory Smith – could well be a much-needed upgrade for Howe’s side.

Leeds in "negotiations" for Weston McKennie

Leeds United are reportedly stepping up their bid to sign Juventus midfielder, Weston McKennie…

What’s the word?

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Whites are believed to be pressing on with talks in the hope of coming to an agreement regarding the USA international, albeit with the Elland Road outfit having yet to meet the Serie A side’s €35m (£31m) valuation.

Writing on Twitter about that developing situation, the transfer guru stated: “Negotiations continue between Leeds and Juventus for Weston McKennie as opening bid has been made for €28m, Juventus want €35m fee.

“McKennie has already agreed personal terms with Leeds.”

This comes amid what has already been a hectic transfer window for Jesse Marsch’s side, with the relegation strugglers having brought in Maximilian Wober and Giorginio Rutter in order to bolster their survival bid.

Marsch’s own Kante

Marsch has already used his American connections to secure the signings of both Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams in the recent past, although it looks as if the former RB Leipzig boss could well land yet another of his compatriots in the form of McKennie.

The latter man has been on the books in Turin since joining on an initial loan deal from Bundesliga side Schalke in the summer of 2020, subsequently racking up 13 goals and five assists in 96 games for the ‘Old Lady’ in that time.

Despite enjoying a profitable 2022/23 campaign thus far on a personal note, with five goal involvements in 21 games in all competitions, the 24-year-old will seemingly be allowed to depart this month amid the ongoing financial struggles that have engulfed the Italian giants.

That loss could well be to Leeds’ gain with the 41-cap machine potentially set to thrive in English football, having even been previously compared to Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante in the past by former United States international, Alexi Lalas.

That comparison is high praise indeed considering what the diminutive Frenchman has won in the game, notably claiming major honours for both club and country, while also being lauded as one of the most “influential” players in the Premier League over the last decade or so, as per pundit Joe Cole.

The 31-year-old has spent much of the current campaign on the sidelines due to injury, although the World Cup winner notably showed his class last term, averaging 2.3 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game in his 26 league outings.

McKennie also illustrated his quality as an effective ball-winner after averaging one tackle and 1.1 interceptions per 90 from his 21 league appearances in that 2021/22 campaign, while also showing his quality in possession as he completed 77% of his total dribbles – with Kante recording 73% in that same metric.

That likeness should well be of interest to those back in Yorkshire, with the Juventus “conqueror” – as described by Lalas – potentially set to bring his Kante-esque quality to Marsch’s side in the near future.
