Sold for £7m: Leeds struck gold selling talent who’s now worth just £600k

Leeds United have endured huge success in such a short period of time, most of which has occurred ever since Marcelo Bielsa’s time in charge at Elland Road.

The Argentine transformed the club on and off the pitch, uniting the fanbase after numerous years of discontent, giving them a reason to be proud of their side, and helping them end their 16-year Premier League absence.

Even though the Whites have since dropped back into the Championship, current boss Daniel Farke deserves a huge amount of credit for building a side that looks to be closing in on a top-flight return.

He’s built an impressive side, boasting the best goalscoring record in the division, but also the second-best defensive tally, showcasing their all-round talent in England’s second tier.

As impressive as the recent form has been under the German, the hard work and foundations were laid for their success many years ago, enabling Bielsa to take the club to the heights he did.

Leeds United’s transfer window in the summer of 2016

Despite Bielsa joining the club in the summer of 2018, many of the key additions to his side were made a couple of years before his arrival in Yorkshire.

Pontus Jansson moved to the Whites on loan from Italian side Torino during the summer of 2016, making 36 appearances during his temporary stint at the club.

Former Leeds defender Pontus Jansson.

He would be so much of a key addition that he would join permanently the following season, notching a total of over 100 games during his three years at Leeds.

Luke Ayling was another player who moved to Elland Road during that summer, moving from Bristol City in a six-figure deal – with no supporter envisaging how much of a fan-favourite he would become.

The right-back featured over 250 times, playing a key role in the promotion-winning campaign, maintaining his place as a starter in the Premier League before eventually leaving in January last year.

However, one other player has departed Yorkshire in recent times, making a huge impact during his time as a player at Elland Road, with the hierarchy also making the right call in offloading him.

The player who Leeds struck gold offloading

Strikers have often been the players who receive the most love but also criticism from the Leeds faithful, having huge pressure to deliver and fire them to success.

Joel Piroe and Patrick Bamford are two players who have endured such an experience within the current first-team side, but they aren’t the only ones to go through such a period.

Kemar Roofe joined the Whites from Oxford United in 2016, costing a fee in the region of £3m – with real expectations of transforming their forward line after what was then a big-money investment.

His first season in Yorkshire was somewhat of a disaster, scoring just three times in 49 appearances across all competitions – appearing to be a huge waste of money given his lack of goal return.

However, he would quickly turn his fortunes around, registering double figures in the two following campaigns, with his goals firing the club to a third-place finish in his final year with the Whites, leading to journalist Derek Clark dubbing him “sensational”.

Roofe would subsequently depart in a £7m deal to join Anderlecht in the summer of 2019, allowing the board to more than double their investment – offloading the striker whilst his stock was at its highest.

However, fast-forward nearly six years, the 32-year-old has just joined Championship rivals Derby County on a free transfer after his release from Rangers in the summer – now only valued at £600k by Transfermarkt.

Given his huge decline in value since his departure from Leeds, the club certainly made the right call in offloading the forward, especially considering they secured promotion the year after he completed the switch to Belgium.

Roofe was a superb option for the Whites during his three-year stint at Elland Road, with the supporters undoubtedly happy to see him get his career back on track after his lengthy period without a club.

Good day's work for Middlesex as batters share fifties around

Simpson reaches 92 as Eskinazi, Higgins add half-centuries at Leicestershire

ECB Reporters Network20-Sep-2022

Half-centuries from John Simpson, Steve Eskinazi and Ryan Higgins combined to give Middlesex what they will regard as a satisfactory opening day’s work as they seek to clinch promotion from Division Two of the LV= Insurance County Championship with two matches left.Middlesex, who started the penultimate round on 188 points – 27 behind leaders Nottinghamshire but 12 ahead of third-placed Glamorgan, finished the day on 293 for 8 with Simpson falling for 92 after Eskinazi had scored 64 and Higgins 53.Having chosen to put Middlesex in on a pitch that made batting tricky for much of the day, Leicestershire mostly bowled well as Michael Finan finished with 3 for 54, with Tom Scriven and Callum Parkinson taking two wickets each but paid dearly for some sloppy fielding, dropping Eskinazi on 11 and Simpson on 29.Middlesex had been four down for 91 at lunch after Leicestershire enjoyed a good morning with the ball but recovered to 196 for 5 at teaFinan, the 26-year-old left-arm seamer plucked out of National Counties cricket, caught the eye again in his third first-class match, beginning the day by removing both Middlesex overs in an impressive opening spell with the new ball.He dismissed Mark Stoneman with his fifth ball, which straightened enough to have him leg before, and then bowled Sam Robson behind his legs. He would have had a third but wicketkeeper Harry Swindells spilled a chance off the glove offered by Eskinazi.Scriven, another recent addition to Leicestershire’s bowling resources, had Pieter Malan caught behind two balls after he’d got away with a streaky edge that second slip probably should have claimed. Skipper and left-arm spinner Parkinson, heeding some criticism about delaying his introduction against Durham last week, was on after 75 minutes and struck in the last over before lunch when his decision to install a short leg for Max Holden reaped a dividend as Sol Budinger took an excellent one-handed catch.Eskinazi completed a 94-ball half-century soon after driving Chris Wright through extra cover for his ninth four. After a watchful start to the session against another testing spell by Finan, a double bowling change allowed Simpson to get into his stride. A couple of boundaries off Scriven were particularly easy on the eye.Leicestershire were handed a gift when Eskinazi threw away his wicket. Presumably trying to create a different angle, he walked down the pitch almost before Scriven reached the crease and left his stumps completely exposed. It was the cricket equivalent of an open goal and Scriven gratefully converted it.It ended a 49-run partnership for the fifth wicket but by tea Simpson and Higgins had added another 56, Simpson having been the beneficiary on 29 of another dropped catch, this time put down at mid-wicket off Ed Barnes.A six down the ground by Simpson off Rehan Ahmed’s leg spin straight after tea was followed by the wicketkeeper-batter’s seventh boundary, eased past extra cover off Scriven, taking him to a 104-ball fifty, his eighth of the season. The sixth-wicket pair built patiently thereafter against some tidy Leicestershire bowling, but their partnership was broken on 99 when Higgins, having just completed a solid 94-ball half-century with a well-timed clip through mid-wicket for four, took a stride forward to a ball from Parkinson that turned just enough to find the edge, Colin Ackermann holding the chance at slip having dropped the one at mid-wicket.With that, Parkinson held back on asking for the new ball, Ahmed justifying the decision as Luke Hollman top-edged an attempted sweep straight to backward square, leaving Middlesex 248 for 7.When the new ball came, Simpson seemed to enjoy the return of pace on to the bat but after moving into the 90s by driving a gift full toss from Finan down the ground for his 10th four he went to sweep the next ball and lived to regret it, sending up a top edge that Budinger safely pouched in the deep. The day began with both teams forming a guard of honour for umpire Nick Cook, who is standing in his last match on this ground ahead of his retirement at the end of this season at the age of 66. Born in Leicester, Cook took 395 first-class wickets for Leicestershire as a left-arm spinner, as well as 52 in 15 Test matches.

Sri Lanka spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana are set to make their CPL debuts in the forthcoming season after having been signed by defending champions St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Trinbago Knight Riders respectively.Hasaranga, who was the No.1-ranked T20I bowler not too long ago, was lined up to play for Patriots last season, but a clash with South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka meant that he had to stay back home for national duty.Related

Hasaranga, however, will not be available for the entire CPL 2022 and will join the squad late, with 19-year-old Pakistani offspin-bowling allrounder Qasim Akram filling in for him in the early exchanges. Akram, who captained Pakistan in the Under-19 World Cup in the Caribbean earlier this year, boasts a T20 strike rate of 153.08. In PSL 2022, he shellacked a 26-ball 51 not out for Karachi Kings against an Islamabad United attack that had Imad Wasim, Mir Hamza, Chris Jordan and Mohammad Nabi.South Africa allrounder Dwaine Pretorius will reunite with his Chennai Super Kings team-mate Dwayne Bravo at Patriots. Much like Bravo, Pretorius has a collection of slower balls in his repertoire, which was on show during IPL 2022.Dewald Brevis, the South African batter who can also pitch in with legspin, will also join Patriots in what will be his first CPL stint. Brevis is only 19 and has played just 16 T20s so far, but his big-hitting in the Under-19 World Cup in the West Indies and the following IPL have turned him into a T20 globetrotter already. He has also been drafted by Kandy Falcons for the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL).Eighteen-year-old Afghanistan legspinner Izharulhaq Naveed will boost the spin attack even further. Naveed was recently part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s net-bowling contingent in IPL 2022, where he worked with the franchise’s head of scouting Malolan Rangarajan. Notably, Malolan also works as the strategy and assistant coach at Patriots.Evin Lewis, who was recently omitted from West Indies’ white-ball squads for the ongoing series at home against Bangladesh on fitness grounds, has been retained by Patriots along with Dominic Drakes.Maheesh Theekshana played for CSK in IPL 2022•BCCI

Munro, Seifert, Prasanna return to TKR
Trinbago Knight Riders also have a fairly significant Sri Lankan flavour having brought in mystery spinner Theekshana and legspin-bowling allrounder Seekkuge Prasanna.Prasanna turned 37 earlier this month and last played for Sri Lanka in 2019, but has a reputation of being a six-hitter in T20 leagues. His 22-ball half-century, studded with four sixes and as many fours, against Barbados Tridents almost carried Knight Riders into the final in 2019.As for Theekshana, he has a deadly carrom ball up his sleeve and is currently No.8 on ICC’s T20I bowler rankings. In his maiden IPL stint, with Super Kings, Theekshana fronted up to bowl in the powerplay in the injury-enforced absence of Deepak Chahar and in all claimed 12 wickets across phases in nine matches at an economy rate of 7.45.At Knight Riders, Theekshana will form a particularly potent spin combination with left-arm fingerspinner Akeal Hosein, who also regularly bowls in the powerplay. The New Zealand pair of Colin Munro and Tim Seifert and USA quick Ali Khan were also back in the TKR fold.Seifert was dropped from New Zealand’s white-ball squad for their European tour, but he did impress in the Vitality Blast for Sussex when he cracked a 55-ball century against Hampshire.Speaking to ESPNcricinfo last year, Seifert said that his stint with TKR in the middle order along with Pollard had helped him develop his game.”I started off my career in that middle order for Northern Districts and my first few tours with the Black Caps was in the middle order as well,” Seifert had said. “Obviously been at the top of the order, but I’ve had that experience in the middle order.”Yeah [batting] with one the best finishers in the world [Kieron Pollard] – it was great. It was just awesome to go out there and work away off his brain – when to attack and when not to attack, and pick the balls to go. It was awesome to be at the other end watching these massive sixes. Sometimes you try to hit them as far, but you know you’re definitely not [hitting as far]!”Knight Riders have a vastly experienced core, with Nicholas Pooran and Andre Russell joining them from Guyana Amazon Warriors and Jamaica Tallawahs respectively.CPL 2022 is set to kick off with the inaugural game of the women’s tournament – the WCPL – between Knight Riders and Barbados Royals on August 31 in St Kitts & Nevis. This match will be followed by the opening game of the men’s edition on the same day at the same venue, where Patriots will face Tallawahs.

Northamptonshire 303 and 284 for 5 (Rickelton101*, Neesham 91) lead Kent 335 (Cox 72, Denly 63, Leaning 63, White 4-62, Sanderson 4-63) by 252 runsA tense final day could be in store in the LV= Insurance County Championship at Canterbury, where Northamptonshire lead Kent by 252, having reached 284 for 5 at stumps, aided by an unbeaten 101 from Ryan Rickelton. On a see-sawing day at the St Lawrence, Kent were all out for 335, adding just 48 to their overnight score for a modest lead of 32. Jack White took 4 for 62 and Ben Sanderson 4 for 63, while Jordan Cox was the top scorer with 72.The hosts then reduced Northamptonshire to 64 for 3, but a stand of 158 between Rickelton and James Neesham batted them out of immediate danger.Neesham’s 91 came from just 100 balls and having started day three as underdogs, Northamptonshire now look a strong bet for at least a draw against their Division One relegation rivals. The hosts had ended day two eyeing a substantial lead after closing on 287 for 5, but Northamptonshire mopped up their final five wickets in little over an hour.Cox was the first man to go, having added just nine to his overnight score of 63 when he left a straight one to White and was bowled.George Linde then edged a Sanderson delivery through the slips for the four that put Kent in the lead but it was his only scoring shot as he nicked the same bowler behind in his next over.Grant Stewart went for a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it 7, hooking Sanderson to White at fine leg and when Sam Billings edged White to Ricardo Vasconcelos at first slip for 44, he repeatedly jabbed his bat into the ground in frustration.Showing little faith in the No. 11 Matt Quinn, Matt Milnes then holed out to Sanderson and was caught by Josh Cobb for 4.Northamptonshire slashed Kent’s lead to five by the lunch interval, but they lost Emilio Gay soon after, when he got a leading edge to Stewart and was caught by Ben Compton.Stewart then snared Vasconcelos, who was the victim of a tumbling catch by Billings for 19 and with Luke Procter suffering from a foot injury, Rob Keogh was the next man in. When he was given out caught behind for 13, trying to hook Daniel Bell-Drummond, Nothamptonshire were in deep trouble but Rickelton and Neesham turned the game with a stand that lasted more than two hours. While Rickelton paced himself, Neesham thrashed his way past 50 before eventually getting caught and bowled by Joe Denly nine runs short of a debut hundred.Josh Cobb then came in for a quickfire innings of 26, which ended when Zak Crawley held a sharp slip catch off Linde, before Rickelton reached three figures just before the close with a straight drive off Stewart for 2 and while all results remain possible, the visitors will be far happier at the end of day three than they were at the start of it.

Imagine him & Gnonto: Leeds keen on deal to sign "tricky" 15-goal star

The January transfer window officially opens for business at the end of this month and it remains to be seen whether or not Leeds United will be busy in the market.

Daniel Farke’s team are currently second in the division and three points behind Sheffield United at the top of the table, in their hunt to secure automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

The Whites, of course, lost 1-0 to Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley at the end of last season, after their third-placed finish in the regular campaign, and will be hoping to avoid the play-offs this time around.

There were plenty of changes at Elland Road in the summer transfer window, with the likes of Cyrsencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter, Glen Kamara, and Archie Gray all moving on.

Those exits did, however, create space in the squad and funds to bring in the likes of Ao Tanaka, Joe Rodon, Joe Rothwell, Largie Ramazani, and Manor Solomon, among others, to bolster Farke’s options across the pitch.

It appears as though the German tactician is not completely happy with his team, though, as the club are reportedly looking to bring in another attacker next month.

Leeds eyeing up young forward

According to Sheffield Star journalist Danny Hall, Leeds United are one of the teams keen on a deal to sign Louie Barry from Aston Villa in the January transfer window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Farke is seemingly eyeing up a swoop to bring the 21-year-old marksman to Elland Road ahead of the second half of the season, to bolster his options at the top end of the pitch – despite already having Brenden Aaronson, Largie Ramazani Manor Solomon, Wilfried Gnonto, Joel Piroe, Patrick Bamford, Mateo Joseph, and Dan James in the attacking positions.

The reporter adds, though, that Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday are also lining up a move for the former Barcelona youngster, which means that the Whites could face plenty of competition to get a deal over the line before the February deadline.

louie-barry-aston-villa

Barry is currently out on loan with Stockport County in League One and Hall reveals that Wednesday, United, and Leeds would all like to bring him to the Championship if Aston Villa decide to recall him in January before sending him out to a higher level.

This means that any deal for the young gem would likely be a loan move, rather than a permanent deal to bolster Farke’s squad for the future as well as the short-term.

Signing another left-winger to come in and compete in the wide areas in the German head coach’s team could allow Wilfried Gnonto to thrive in a new role as a number ten.

Why Wilfried Gnonto could thrive in a new role

So far this season, the Italy U21 international has played all 22 of his matches for the club on either the left or the right flank, with Aaronson the usual starter in the number ten position.

Gnonto, however, has played 63 times as a second striker or as an attacking midfielder in his career to date, which shows that he is comfortable in central areas, as is also evidenced by him popping up in the middle to score in the clip above.

This suggests that the potential is there for Farke to be able to unleash him in a central role for Leeds in the second half of the season, to allow him to get more involved in the game.

As you can see in the table above, Aaronson averages more touches of the ball per game than Gnonto and, yet, has produced less at the top end of the pitch, with six goal contributions compared to Gnonto’s nine.

Unleashing the Italian wizard in a central role to get more touches of the ball each match could see his already impressive output increase in the final third, by giving him more chances to make things happen as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

This change in position can only be effective, though, if Leeds have enough depth in the wide areas to facilitate moving Gnonto to compete with Aaronson, and that is what the signing of Barry could provide.

Why Leeds should sign Barry

The Stockport County loanee’s form in League One so far this season suggests that the potential is there for him to make the step up to the Championship to be an exciting option for Farke at the top end of the pitch.

Former teammate Will Grigg once described him as a “really tricky” forward with a “massive future” in the game, and his performances this term suggest that he is on the right track to living up to that claim.

As Ramazani has been restricted to six starts due to injury, Leeds have needed Manor Solomon to step up on the right flank, but he has struggled at times. The Tottenham Hotspur loanee has scored two goals and provided one assist in 14 Championship outings.

This shows that the Israel international has failed to provide regular quality in the final third for the West Yorkshire outfit so far, which is not an issue that Barry has had – albeit at a lower level.

As you can see in the table above, the English forward has produced 14 goals in 20 appearances in the third tier, despite taking fewer touches per game than both Aaronson and Gnonto – who have combined for nine league goals in the Championship.

Barry, who has scored 15 goals in all competitions this season, has only missed four ‘big chances’ on his way to scoring 14 times in League One, which speaks to his ruthless efficiency in front of goal.

Leeds have not got enough out of Solomon, as shown by his lacklustre return at the top end of the pitch, and signing an in-form winger with goalscoring potential could be just what Farke needs to be able to unleash Gnonto centrally in the second half of the season.

NSW were 5 for 106 before Kerr and Tremain pulled them out of trouble

Emerging allrounder Hayden Kerr dug New South Wales out of major trouble on day one against Tasmania as he closed in on a maiden first-class century.A confident Kerr rescued NSW from a precarious 5 for 106 with an impressive unbeaten 87 to lift the Blues to 8 for 272 at stumps at the SCG, where just three weeks ago he memorably smashed 98 not out to power Sydney Sixers into the BBL final. The powerfully-built Kerr started slowly with just five runs off his first 23 balls in a bid to stabilise a wobbly NSW batting effort after their top order had been ripped apart by quick Sam Rainbird. When Trent Copeland fell for 9, NSW slumped to 7 for 154 but Kerr found support through Chris Tremain (38) as the pair upstaged their top-order batters with an enterprising 70-run partnership. They counterattacked against the old ball and took advantage of a flagging Tasmania attack amid warm conditions in Sydney.Kerr, who went unsold in the IPL auction, made a cautious start before an aggressive approach against spinner Nivethan Radhakrishnan sparked his 125-ball knock as he compiled his second Shield half-century in his third match. They released Tasmania’s stranglehold after NSW sunk to 3 for 41 after electing to bat. Rainbird was superb with his 3 for 26 from his opening five-over burst marked by a pearler of a delivery to dismiss NSW captain Kurtis Patterson, who was caught behind for a second-ball duck.Until falling away late in the day, Tasmania had chipped away with regular wickets, including Radhakrishnan removing Peter Nevill to claim his maiden scalp in first-class cricket on debut. The India-born ambidextrous allrounder starred for Australia in the recent Under-19 World Cup and didn’t look out of place in his Shield debut with 1 for 29 off seven overs. With just one win from four Shield matches, NSW desperately need a victory to remain in the mix for next month’s final.

"Superb" 24 y/o Celtic player basically admits he could be sold next summer

A Celtic exit in the summer of 2025 is “not out of the question at all”, according to a fresh update from a “superb” 24-year-old Hoops player.

Latest Celtic news

The January transfer window isn’t a million miles away now, so it is no surprise to see Celtic being linked with plenty of potential new signings. Highly-rated teenage Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller has emerged as an exciting target for the Scottish Premiership champions, but rivals Rangers are thought to be providing competition.

There are players who could head the other way in January, however, with Alexandro Bernabei one such figure, with the left-back reportedly playing his final game for Celtic, following a loan move to Internacional.

In terms of current injuries, Adam Idah was ruled out of the international break because of injury, with his involvement with the Republic of Ireland ending before their UEFA Nations League matches got underway. The hope is that he will be back in the fold sooner rather than later, though, with his withdrawal more precautionary than anything.

"Superb" Celtic ace hints at exit

Speaking to Fotbollskanalen [via The Daily Record], Gustaf Lagerbielke admitted that he may leave Celtic for FC Twente permanently next summer, having moved there on loan earlier this year: “It is a straight loan until the summer. Then there is always the possibility that I will be bought. So far it’s felt very good there so we’ll see how it goes forward.

“There is always that [chance of going back to Celtic]. I still have a contract there. It’s not out of the question at all. Then I’ll have to see closer to the end of the season what happens with everything. But it’s a fantastic club.”

The fact that Lagerbielke was even allowed to leave Celtic on loan during the summer window suggests that Brendan Rodgers doesn’t see him as a future part of his plans. This is despite him being admired by his manager, who said of him last December after a winning goal against Feyenoord: “It was a great moment for him because he hasn’t been involved in squads, other guys have been in front of him.

“But his attitude in training in the main has been superb and he has always been ready. The irony of him being sent off and then getting the goal was great, a really nice moment for him.”

Lagerbielke has generally done well in a Celtic shirt, winning the league title and Scottish Cup last season, but he was limited to only seven appearances in the former and may feel that a move away next year is best for his development.

His admiration for the Hoops is clear, but he is also seemingly happy at Twente and likes the idea of his temporary switch being turned into a permanent one at the end of the season.
