Amorim must unleash "rapid" academy gem who could be Man Utd's new Carrick

Manchester United are a club that has always had a knack for bringing through and developing young players from their academy to improve their first-team.

Going back to the likes of Ryan Giggs, George Best, David Beckham, and Sir Bobby Charlton, among many others, the Red Devils have a rich history of cultivating world-class talent.

In more recent years, Carrington has birthed careers for Marcus Rashford, currently on loan at Aston Villa, Scott McTominay, at Napoli, Anthony Elanga, at Nottingham Forest, and current first-team stars Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

Ruben Amorim is currently tasked with bringing through the next class of talent through to the first-team at Old Trafford, and there are plenty of potential future stars for the club coming through.

Manchester United's emerging talents

Senior debuts have been handed to Chido Obi-Martin and Ayden Heaven in recent weeks, both of whom joined the academy side from Arsenal.

Obi-Martin has made three first-team appearances for the Red Devils this year after a return of 12 goals in nine matches for the U18 side, following his exceptional haul of 32 goals in 21 games for the Gunners at U18 level during his time in London.

Heaven, meanwhile, came on for Leny Yoro at half-time against Arsenal on Sunday and impressed in the second half, with three out of five duels won, three clearances, a tackle, and an interception.

In The Pipeline

Another emerging talent who should be unleashed by Amorim in the weeks to come is 21-year-old central midfielder Toby Collyer, who could finally be unearthed as the club’s next version of Michael Carrick.

Why Man Utd must unleash Toby Collyer

Sports analyst and Man United fan Kirsty, on X, compared the Carrington talent to the former Red Devils and England midfielder, as well as comparing him to Darren Fletcher.

Back in January, she posted: “Collyer might just be that Carrick/Fletcher player we’ve been longing for. Nothing flashy, just engine, control, and routine.”

Carrick racked up 464 appearances in all competitions during his time with United as a player, earning a reputation for being a steady performer who could break up play and keep the game ticking over with his qualities in and out of possession.

Collyer has a long, long, way to go before he can be directly compared to the now-Middlesbrough manager, but he has shown a lot of very promising signs.

As you can see in the table above, the “rapid” academy graduate – as he was described by one United content creator – has yet to start a Premier League match. That said, he has impressed with his cameos off the bench, dominating players in physical battles whilst remaining composed on the ball.

Collyer, who was described as “aggressive” on and off the ball by Bruno Fernandes, has taken his chances when they have come his way off the bench, and now it is time for Amorim to finally unleash him from the start as he could emerge as the club’s next Carrick.

From the 2009/10 campaign onwards, the England international averaged 2.1 tackles per game and a pass completion rate of 87%. The current United youngster is on course for a similar output on and off the ball, despite being yet to start a match, which is a very positive sign.

Amorim has just discovered Man Utd's next big star & it's not Heaven or Obi

The Red Devils can finally find their next tempo-controlling, yet defensively aggressive, star in the middle of the park in Collyer, and it is down to Amorim to hand him the chances to showcase his quality as a starter in the coming weeks and months.

Tasmania have victory in sight despite Manenti's sparkling display

Another Tim Ward half-century and more Peter Siddle heroics have Tasmania positioned for victory against South Australia in the Sheffield Shield.Chasing 234 to win, they were 0 for 104 at stumps on day three at Adelaide Oval. Ward, who made 82 in the first innings, was unbeaten 60 and Caleb Jewell is on 43.The runs flowed freely for the opening duo, reaching their century stand in 27 overs, with Ward striking eight fours and one six after Tasmania’s bowlers earlier struggled to wrap up SA’s innings.A hard-hitting half-century from debutant Ben Manenti revived SA from 7 for 105 to 252 all out, with Manenti unbeaten on 85.The first-gamer, batting at No. 9, followed his valuable 59 in the first innings with more runs, striking six fours and three sixes. His feats came with handy assistance from Wes Agar (33) and Nathan McAndrew (35).Veteran quick Siddle had ripped through SA’s top order – at one stage he had 4 for 13 from eight overs. The 37-year-old finished with 4 for 45, following his 4 for 51 in the first innings.Siddle counted the prized scalp of Test batsman Travis Head, caught at short leg for a duck, among his victims.Beau Webster chipped in while SA opener Jake Weatherald was the seventh man out, making 52 from 115 balls.

Will Mahmudullah make Bangladesh's T20 World Cup squad?

A prolonged dip in form has meant Bangladesh’s most capped T20I player can no longer be assured of his place

The biggest question going around in Dhaka right now is whether Mahmudullah will make it into Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup team. The selectors are expected to announce the 15-member squad on September 15, shortly after the BCB president Nazmul Hassan gives his approval. Before the announcement, the board has arranged a three-day training camp for the new technical consultant, S Sriram, to look at the talent at his disposal. On Monday, the first day of the camp, team director Khaled Mahmud said they are yet to take a call on Mahmudullah. He made 52 runs at 106.12 strike rate in the Asia Cup, having made just 99 runs in six T20s earlier this year. Gone are the days of Mahmudullah being the designated hitter for Bangladesh in the death overs. He has looked a shadow of the player he once was between 2016 to 2018.”(Mahmudullah) Riyad is an important part of our white-ball cricket,” Mahmud said. “There has been no decision on him. We will take a decision when we sit down to do the team, whether we need him in the squad or not. I can say that Riyad is still important for us. It is good to have discussions on whether Riyad will get the chance or not. We also can’t say that Riyad isn’t an automatic choice. We have to take everything into consideration.”Mahmud suggested that Mahmudullah’s experience – he is Bangladesh’s most capped T20I player – will not give him an advantage at the selection table. Mushfiqur Rahim, a senior player similarly under pressure to score regularly in T20Is, retired shortly after the Asia Cup, citing his need to give more time to Tests and ODIs. But it was quite clear that Mushfiqur knew his time was up in T20Is.Mahmud, considered Mahmudullah’s mentor from his early days, said that they were not getting the best out of him right now. “At the end of the day, we will consider the best interest of the Bangladesh team. We are not going to see someone differently just because he is more experienced. We definitely value his service, like the other experienced players. Riyad is trying hard, but we are not getting what we expect from him. He is scoring a run-a-ball 27, for instance.”But Riyad has been our match-winner,” Mahmud said. “He made centuries in the 2015 World Cup. He had a big partnership with Shakib [Al Hasan] in the 2017 Champions Trophy. He has won matches single-handedly too. We can’t say no to him all of a sudden, but the team is bigger than the individual. We have called up a lot of players [to the camp], but not all are called up for selection.”Bangladesh’s thinking of a side without Mushfiqur and probably Mahmudullah comes from their confidence in the return of Litton Das, Nurul Hasan and Yasir Ali from various injuries. It is reportedly hoped that the return of this trio could solve their middle and top order problems that have plagued them for more than 12 months.

Kane was presented with a golden opportunity in the first half of Bayern's Champions League quarter-final first-leg encounter against Inter on Tuesday night but uncharacteristically failed to take his moment. The England captain was played through inside the Inter box and wrapped a curling effort towards goal, only to see the ball clip the post and fly out for a goal kick.

It was a rare miss from such a distance from Kane, who has a reputation as one of Europe's most lethal finishers. It was a night to forget for the former Tottenham man, but he has taken to social media in an effort to rally the troops for the second part of the tie.

"World-class" Arsenal ace considering January exit as agents meet with club

While Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta arguably cannot afford to let regulars depart in the middle of a Premier League title race, there are some members of his squad who face uncertain futures.

Arsenal prepare for FA Cup clash against Man United

A lot of the talk at the Emirates Stadium this week has been centered around January and whether Arsenal will indeed back Arteta with quality additions in a bid to boost their chances of winning a first domestic title in over 20 years.

Arteta won his first trophy during his debut season in charge of the Gunners that year, coming from behind to beat Chelsea at an empty Wembley Stadium amid the pandemic.

Since then, Arteta has only won two Community Shields, and the pressure is on Arsenal’s manager to deliver more major silverware, over five years after he was appointed to replace Unai Emery.

“It’s a massive part of our history, we’ve won it 14 times and it is a competition very attached to us,” said Arteta on the FA Cup’s importance to Arsenal.

“It’s a beautiful game to play against a massive club, and a very special occasion as well with the amount supporters that they’re going to bring, so it’s a very big game.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetaapplauds fans after the match

“The memory of winning something and celebrating and sharing it with your people is the ultimate goal. I will never forget the process and the people that you meet, but overall I have great memories about the competition.”

If Arteta is to deliver trophies this season, he will need every star man available, especially considering the bad luck that they’ve had with injuries this season. That being said, there are those who could take their future into their own hands.

Thomas Partey and Jorginho are out of contract at the end of this season, with there being no sign of renewals for either player.

Jorginho considering January exit from Arsenal

According to ESPN, it is believed Jorginho is considering a January exit from Arsenal, and his sights are set on potentially joining one of two clubs in Brazil.

Palmeiras and Flamengo are thought to be the only South American clubs he’ll entertain this month. The 33-year-old’s agents have already held a meeting with Palmeiras, and have offered the Brasileirao side the chance to sign him.

It is stressed that there is no formal offer on the table or transfer talks underway yet, but Jorginho’s representatives are gauging possible landing spots for the ex-Chelsea star, who is a favourite among his teammates.

“I know him a lot, so for me, it is nice to play with him, he knows me well,” said Arsenal striker Kai Havertz on Jorginho last season.

“It makes life easy for me, he is a world-class player.”

The £110,000-per-week midfielder played an important role in Arsenal’s first team towards the back-end of 2023/24 and has featured regularly as a reliable utility man under Arteta this campaign.

Arsenal want to sign "excellent" £120k-per-week attacker more than anyone

Arsenal want to sign a very in-form forward as a “dream” priority target, with manager Mikel Arteta widely believed to be on the hunt for new attacking options.

Arsenal tipped to sign new forward in January

Led by interim sporting director Jason Ayto and managing director Richard Garlick, who are overseeing the club’s recruitment drive after Edu’s departure in November, Arsenal are believed to be entertaining the possibility of capturing a new forward when the window reopens next month.

Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling are both expected to be on the sidelines for weeks after suffering recent injuries, with the former taken off against Crystal Palace last weekend with a hamstring issue.

Sterling has a problem with his knee, and both players will be missing for the foreseeable future, in a seismic blow for Arteta.

The Gunners’ newly-found shortage of wide options has led to reports that Arteta has U-turned on the idea of signing a new winger in January, with the Spaniard and Arsenal now very much considering a winter swoop to reinforce their attacking options.

Some credible media sources, like The Daily Mail, have even claimed there are Arsenal worries that Saka could be out until March – which would seriously endanger their chances of winning a first Premier League title in over two decades.

In terms of the options already at their disposal, Kai Havertz is able to play out wide in place of Sterling and Saka, as is Gabriel Jesus, but Arsenal are now one or two injuries away from being desperately short of bodies in that area.

In the build up to 2025, Arsenal have also been repeatedly linked with a prolific new number nine, with Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak believed to be of serious interest to Arteta’s side.

The Magpies sensation is one of England’s best centre-forwards, bagging 25 goals in all competitions last season, and Newcastle talks over a new contract for Isak have stalled lately – putting a host of elite sides on alert over his potential availability in the upcoming transfer windows.

Arsenal want to sign Newcastle star Alexander Isak more than anyone

Speaking to GiveMeSport, reliable journalist Ben Jacobs has suggested that Arsenal want to sign Isak more than any other player – with the Sweden international standing out as their “dream” top target.

“Arsenal’s dream priority is Alexander Isak, and I’m still told that he would like to join a Champions League club and stay in the Premier League in the long run,” said Jacobs.

“But of course, in the short-to-medium term, he’s on fire for Newcastle United. He’s invested at Newcastle, and he’s well contracted at Newcastle, so they aren’t worried about necessarily losing Isak imminently, nor do they feel they absolutely have to agree a new contract with him because he remains healthily contracted.

“So it’s a bit of a dream target for Arsenal.”

Called an “excellent” striker by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, Isak reportedly earns a wage packet of around £120,000-per-week, but it is unclear how much he’d demand to swap St. James’ Park for the Emirates Stadium.

Their own Edouard: Rangers line up move for "really exciting" striker

Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement will likely have plenty on his mind after his side dropped points once again in the Scottish Premiership at the weekend.

The Light Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by Dundee United at Ibrox and are now a whopping 11 points behind Celtic in the title race, having lost three and drawn two in the league already.

This means that the Gers, who are third in the table, may already be questioning whether or not they are still in the title race, against a relentless Hoops team.

Clement will, therefore, be plotting ways for his side to improve and gain more consistency in their performances, in an attempt to catch up with their Glasgow rivals.

The Belgian boss, however, will also be wary of what these results mean for his future. Football Insider reports that he will be given until, at least, the League Cup final clash with Celtic at Hampden Park next month before the board make a decision on his position.

He may hope that, after that final, the club decide to give him and Nils Koppen a chance to make further changes to the squad in the January transfer window.

Rangers eyeing Championship forward

According to the Yorkshire Evening Press, Rangers are one of a number of clubs eyeing up a swoop for Leeds United centre-forward Joe Gelhardt.

The report claims that interest is building in the former Wigan Athletic starlet ahead of the January window, as he has not played regularly for the Whites so far this season.

It states that there is ‘enthusiasm’ from the player’s camp to pursue a potential loan move away from Elland Road ahead of the second half of the season, but it does not reveal whether or not Leeds are prepared to sanction a deal.

Celtic transfer target Joe Gelhardt in action for Leeds United.

The YEP reveals that there was interest, including from Rangers, in a loan for Gelhardt in the summer transfer window but the Whites were unwilling to send him away at the time.

It is now said that Portsmouth, Stoke City, Plymouth Argyle, Preston North End, Rangers, and two unnamed clubs from Belgium are lining up swoops to sign the English forward in January, due to his willingness to move away from West Yorkshire.

The report claims that they are all interested in exploring a loan agreement for the 22-year-old dynamo, whilst it remains to be seen whether or not the English side would entertain any permanent offers.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Whether it is on loan or on a permanent deal, Clement and Koppen – should the former still be in his post – should push to win the race for the talented youngster.

He has yet to make a breakthrough at Leeds in the Championship but his form at youth level and his previous experience in the Premier League suggests that the potential is there for him to be a star for Rangers

Joe Gelhardt's attacking potential

Since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, Gelhardt has only started two matches and made 12 appearances in the second tier of English football, which means that he has not had many opportunities to showcase his quality or develop as a player on the pitch.

He did show early signs of promise in the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa and Jesse Marsch, though, with a return of two goals and four assists in 35 top-flight outings, despite only starting six of those matches.

Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt.

The 22-year-old star was described as a “human wrecking ball” and a “really exciting” talent by pundit Jamie Redknapp after his impressive start to life in the Premier League.

Unfortunately, though, Gelhardt was unable to kick on and establish himself as a regular starter for the Whites and now finds himself on the fringes of Farke’s squad.

That does not mean that he is a bad player or that he would not score goals for Rangers, though, as the youngster may just need regular minutes to find his feet and gain some confidence in front of goal.

Gelhardt’s record of five goals in five games for Wigan’s U18s and 20 goals in 31 games for Leeds United’s U21s suggests that the potential is there for the centre-forward to score goals on a regular basis, if he can find his rhythm at senior level.

Joe Gelhardt could be Clement's own Odsonne Edouard

Clement could find his own version of former Celtic number nine Odsonne Edouard by unearthing the £15k-per-week youngster’s talents at Ibrox in the second half of the season.

In the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, Gelhardt was listed as one of the most similar players to the then-Crystal Palace attacker on FBref, based on their statistics that term.

As you can see in the table above, both players offered a similar threat in front of goal per 90, as scorers and creators, whilst they also showcased their ability to beat defenders with the ball at their feet to create something out of nothing, with their take-on successes.

Edouard was, of course, an elite striker at Scottish Premiership level during his time on the other side of Glasgow, before his move to Crystal Palace.

As you can see in the graphic above, the French marksman plundered 87 goals in 179 appearances for the club in all competitions and won the Golden Boot in the division on two occasions, with 60 goals in 104 Premiership outings.

Rangers are looking for their clinical, reliable, goalscorer after Cyriel Dessers (16) finished eight goals behind Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland in the Golden Boot race in the top-flight last season, and has only managed four goals in 12 games this term.

Gelhardt, based on his Premier League form under Bielsa, can provide similar qualities to Edouard in the number nine position in regards to his all-round play and threat in front of goal, with his academy record suggesting that the potential is there for him to be a reliable scorer.

Liverpool now scouting "special" MLS talent with 36 G/A in 2024

Liverpool are now among the sides keeping a close eye on a new breakout star as they look to bolster Arne Slot’s squad, it has been reported.

Liverpool's Salah contract standoff

Mohamed Salah has been a mainstay in the Liverpool side since he arrived from Roma, and is arguably in some of the best form of his Reds career under Slot. The Egyptian has taken the Premier League by storm once more this season, having managed 11 goals and seven assists in his 13 outings so far to help Liverpool move nine points clear at the top of the table.

Already a Liverpool icon, his 223 goals in Red make him one of the club’s five most prolific goalscorers of all time and despite being 32-years-old he is showing no signs of slowing down. But as it stands, he will be leaving the club for free at the end of the season, with the club yet to offer him a new contract and his current deal expiring in the summer.

Speaking after his side’s 3-2 win over Southampton, he admitted he was “more out than in” as things stand.

“Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club, [so] I’m probably more out than in,” Salah told reporters. “You know now I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.”

Even if a contract is agreed, Salah cannot remain Liverpool’s first choice winger for ever, and his will be big shoes to fill when he does eventually depart Anfield. Now, Liverpool are eyeing a player who could potentially go some way to filling them.

Liverpool monitoring "special" talent

That comes as Caught Offside report that the Reds are now keeping a close eye on MLS superstar Gabriel Pec. The 23-year-old only arrived in the US in January but has taken the division by storm, grabbing 16 goals and 14 assists in MLS as well as a further six goals and assists in just four playoff outings.

His form saw him awarded the newcomer of the year trophy, where he finished ahead of former Liverpool great Luis Suarez in the voting, as well as providing more goals and assists than the veteran Uruguayan forward.

He has been dubbed a “special” talent by MLS fan account MLS moves on X and now, his form has made clubs sit up and take notice.

That is according to Caught Offside, who claim that Liverpool are “among a number of Premier League clubs who’ve had scouts keeping an eye on Pec”. Pec, who has spent much of the season on the right side of attack, is a left footed forward who likes to cut inside onto his stronger foot, not unlike the likes of Salah and Bukayo Saka.

It is added that the 23-year-old is being “eyed up as a future target” for the Reds, which could see him part of the solution to fill the right flank in a post-Salah Liverpool setup.
