Jurgen Klopp’s record in major cup finals: All trophies and titles

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool added yet another piece of silverware to their bulging trophy cabinet with victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final. The Reds overcame the Blues thanks to a late Virgil van Dijk header in extra time, sending the supporters at Wembley into raptures as dreams of a farewell quadruple for their departing manager were kept alive.

Klopp has announced that he's leaving Anfield at the end of the season, bringing to an end a storied tenure that has seen him win the Premier League, Champions League, both domestic cups, the Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. Here, we run through how the German has fared in finals during his managerial career, with his track record decidedly mixed.

May 2012 – Borussia Dortmund 5-2 Bayern Munich

DFB Pokal

Borussia Dortmund had won the Bundesliga for the second season in a row, sealing top spot ahead of Bayern Munich with two games still to go, but Bayern had a chance to secure revenge in the German Cup final.

After Arjen Robben had cancelled out an early goal from Shinji Kagawa, Dortmund seized control of the game with a quickfire double before the break through Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski. Lewandowski made it 4-1 just before the hour, and while Franck Ribery gave Bayern some hope with 15 minutes to go, Lukasz Piszczek put the result beyond any doubt late on, securing a first-ever double for Dortmund.

May 2013 – Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Bayern Munich

Champions League

Bayern Munich beat Jurgen Klopp and Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League final.

Just a week after their DFB-Pokal defeat to Dortmund in 2012, Bayern had lost the Champions League final to Chelsea in their own stadium, but they had the opportunity to make amends 12 months on at Wembley.

Once again, it was Klopp's side standing in their way, though this time it was Jupp Heynckes' men who had a psychological edge after dethroning Dortmund in the Bundesliga. Mario Mandzukic put Bayern in front on the hour mark before Ilkay Gundogan equalised from the penalty spot. Arjen Robben scored a late winner for the Bavarians, who went on to beat Stuttgart in the cup final to seal a treble.

May 2014 – Borussia Dortmund 0-2 Bayern Munich (aet)

DFB Pokal

2014 marked the first (and thus far only) cup final meeting between Klopp and Pep Guardiola, who had won the Bundesliga in his first season in charge at Bayern. There was nothing to separate the two sides across 90 minutes, though Dortmund justifiably felt they should have been awarded a goal in the second half when Hummels' header appeared to cross the line.

In the end, another 30 minutes were required, and Robben finally broke the deadlock two minutes into the second half of extra-time before Thomas Muller clinched victory for Bayern in stoppage time as Dortmund pushed desperately for an equaliser.

May 2015 – Borussia Dortmund 1-3 Wolfsburg

DFB Pokal

Klopp's final game as the Dortmund manager saw him take on Wolfsburg in yet another cup final, but this was a far weaker side that had scraped a seventh-place finish, and those vulnerabilities showed in Berlin. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put them ahead, but Luis Gustavo, Kevin De Bruyne (who would prove to be a long-term competitor for Klopp) and Bas Dost hit the target for Bundesliga runners-up Wolfsburg as they turned the game around.

Klopp's subsequent break from management would ultimately last less than five months as he took over at Liverpool in October following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers.

February 2016 – Liverpool 1-1 Man City (1-3 on pens)

EFL Cup

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool lost to Manchester City in the 2016 League Cup final.

In the first of two finals in Klopp's maiden campaign at Anfield, Liverpool travelled to Wembley – the site of the German's Champions League heartbreak three years prior – to face Manuel Pellegrini's Manchester City. Simon Mignolet's error allowed Fernandinho to put City ahead, but Philippe Coutinho scored late on to force extra-time.

Penalties were ultimately required, but Coutinho, Lucas Leiva and Adam Lallana were all denied by Willy Caballero and City prevailed 3-1, with Yaya Toure scoring the winning spot-kick. This would be Pellegrini's final silverware with City before Guardiola took charge in the summer, sparking one of the great rivalries in English football history.

May 2016 – Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Europa League

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool lost the 2016 Europa League final to Sevilla.

Klopp's second final in 2016 took him to Basel, where Sevilla stood between the Reds and Europa League glory. Liverpool had beaten Borussia Dortmund, fierce rivals Manchester United and Villarreal on their memorable run to the showpiece, and they looked destined for glory when Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring after 35 minutes.

However, Sevilla, who had won the competition in the previous two seasons, launched a stunning second-half turnaround with a goal from Kevin Gameiro and a quickfire double from Coke. Rather than qualifying for the Champions League – the prize for the victor in this competition – Liverpool missed out on Europe altogether after finishing eighth in the Premier League.

May 2018 – Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool

Champions League

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool lost the 2018 Champions League final to Real Madrid.

In Klopp's first year of Champions League football at Anfield, Liverpool went all the way to the final by knocking out Porto, eventual English champions Manchester City and Roma, but they then faced perhaps the most daunting test of all in the form of Real Madrid.

Los Blancos had won the competition 12 times, at least five more than any other side, and were pursuing a third European triumph in a row. On a bitterly disappointing evening in Kyiv that saw top scorer Mohamed Salah forced off injured and goalkeeper Loris Karius make two mistakes, Real won 3-1, with Gareth Bale scoring one of the all-time great Champions League goals.

June 2019 – Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool

Champions League

Jurgen Klopp lifts the Champions League trophy.

After the woes of Kyiv, Liverpool's 2018/19 Champions League campaign was styled as a shot at redemption. They had amassed more points than any runner-up in Premier League history (97), but while they hadn't done enough to overcome City in a breathless title race, they refused to let Tottenham stand in their way of a long-awaited first major honour under Klopp.

Salah scored a penalty within two minutes of kick-off after a handball by Moussa Sissoko, and Divock Origi secured the trophy in the closing stages, ensuring Klopp finally became a European champion at the third time of asking.

August 2019 – Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea (5-4 on pens)

UEFA Super Cup

Liverpool's success against Spurs in Madrid earned them a place in the UEFA Super Cup final against another English side in Chelsea, who had beaten Arsenal to win the Europa League.

It was the Blues who took a shock lead through Olivier Giroud, but Sadio Mane brought the Reds back level early in the second half. Neither side found a winner in regulation time, and a would-be match-winner from Mane in extra-time was swiftly cancelled out by Jorginho's penalty.

With Alisson out injured, Liverpool had to rely on backup goalkeeper Adrian in the shootout, and he stepped up to the task with a decisive save from Tammy Abraham.

December 2019 – Liverpool 1-0 Flamengo (aet)

Club World Cup

As champions of their continent, Liverpool also featured at the Club World Cup in Qatar at the end of that year, and after beating Mexican side Monterrey 2-1 in the semis, they set up a showdown with Brazilian outfit Flamengo in the final.

Once again, the 90 minutes finished level, but Roberto Firmino, who had scored a stoppage-time winner in the last four, scored in the first half of extra time, and unlike in the Super Cup, Liverpool were able to hold on. Having failed to win any major silverware in the first three seasons of Klopp's tenure, the Reds had won now three trophies in the space of six months.

Farke has unearthed new "dynamite" Leeds star whose value has soared

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke has not been afraid to dip into the academy to utilise the young talent within his squad so far this season.

Teenage midfielder Archie Gray has featured in 35 Championship matches, and started 32, for the Whites, with the majority of his appearances coming out of position at right-back.

20-year-old centre-forward Mateo Joseph has also emerged as a first-team option for the German head coach, having had his breakthrough performance against Chelsea recently in the FA Cup.

The former Norwich City tactician has unearthed a new Whites star with the academy graduate, whose value has soared since his move to the club in 2022.

Mateo Joseph's market value in 2022

Leeds swooped to sign the Spanish-born marksman from Espanyol in January 2022. Football Transfers gave him his first Expected Transfer Value (xTV) in December of that year – placing it at just €300k (£256k).

That came after Joseph scored just two goals in 11 appearances for the club at U18 and U21 level combined during the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, which shows that he had a slow start to life in England.

Leeds forward Mateo Joseph.

The talented number nine then burst onto the scene with a staggering return of 15 goals in 21 Premier League 2 matches for the U21s last season.

His outstanding form at youth level earned him first-team recognition, with six outings for the senior side – including three in the Premier League – without registering a goal or an assist.

Mateo Joseph's current market value

At the time of writing (11/03/2024), Football Transfers has Joseph's xTV at €2m (£1.7m) and that is a staggering 567% increase on the €300k he was valued at in 2022.

His soaring market value could be down to Farke's continued use of him in the first-team set-up at Elland Road throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

The England U20 international, who U23 scout Antonio Mango hailed as "dynamite" inside the box, has made 16 appearances for the senior team, with 12 of those matches coming in the Championship as he competes with Patrick Bamford for a starting role.

As you can see in the table above, Joseph recently enjoyed his breakthrough performance for the first-team with two goals at Stamford Bridge against Premier League side Chelsea, with a goal in each half, as Leeds were beaten 3-2 in the FA Cup.

They were his first goals for Leeds, with many more, hopefully, to come, and showed that he has the quality to make an impact against top-quality opposition.

The next milestone for the 20-year-old whiz is to score his first goal for the club in the league, which is a target between now and the end of the current season as the Whites fight for automatic promotion back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Farke has unearthed a 'dynamite' new Leeds gem in Joseph, who he has put faith in as a first-team regular, and it will be interesting to see how he develops in Yorkshire over the weeks, months, and years to come.

Tottenham eyeing "brilliant" star with more assists than Udogie this season

Having enjoyed a solid, if not consistent, first season in charge, Ange Postecoglou could make his mark at Tottenham Hotspur once again this summer to welcome a La Liga star who has received plenty of attention.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites have already reportedly turned their attention towards summer reinforcements, with the likes of Pedro Neto and Kevin Denkey among those currently stealing the headline. Neto has starred for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season and the fact that he's already Premier League proven instantly makes him an ideal option for all those in North London.

Denkey, meanwhile, would finally fill the goalscoring void left behind by Harry Kane, who left to join Bayern Munich last summer. The Cercle Brugge forward has enjoyed an outstanding campaign, making interest from Spurs little surprise. That said, however, it's not just his attacking options that Postecoglou is looking to improve.

Having already welcomed Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario and Radu Dragusin to boost their backline in the last year, Spurs have now been tipped to pursue a La Liga star who has already attracted plenty of interest ahead of a potential summer move. The Lilywhites will simply hope to stand out amongst the crowd.

That star, of course, is Miguel Gutierrez. According to reports in Spain, Spurs are eyeing a move to sign Gutierrez after his excellent season for surprise title challengers Girona. As mentioned, the Lilywhites aren't the only club interested, however. If they want to sign the 22-year-old, then they will reportedly have to fend off interest from Real Madrid, Manchester United and even North London rivals Arsenal.

Daniel Levy hasn't been afraid to back Postecoglou since the Australian's arrival last summer and could once again splash the cash in the next transfer window to finally put Spurs back on course to finish inside the Premier League's top four.

"Brilliant" Gutierrez could compete with Udogie

As good as Destiny Udogie has been this season, Spurs would be getting direct competition in Gutierrez if they managed to secure a deal for the left-back this summer. Gutierrez's stats show just how good he's been for Girona in the current campaign.

Looking to get one over on Arsenal off the pitch, Spurs could land an impressive addition to Postecoglou's squad. As the summer transfer window arrives, Gutierrez will be one to watch out for, whether he stays at Girona or, indeed, chooses a move to the Premier League.

Update on 777’s Everton takeover amid Premier League ownership test

In an ongoing battle to secure the financial boost of new owners, a fresh report has issued an update on Everton and 777 Partners' potential agreement, amid the Premier League's Owners' and Directors' test.

Everton takeover news

777 Partners – a Miami-based private investment company – initially reached an agreement with Everton over a takeover back in September, but are yet to be given a green light from the Premier League due to a number of concerns.

Current owner Farhad Moshiri expressed his delight at the time, saying: "The nature of ownership and financing of top football clubs has changed immeasurably since I first invested in Everton over seven years ago.

"The days of an owner/benefactor are seemingly out of reach for most, and the biggest clubs are now typically owned by well-resourced private equity firms, specialist sports investors or state-backed companies and funds."

Now in March, however, Moshiri is still yet to see a resolution to the takeover and remains in control at Goodison Park, where the Toffees were charged for breaching Financial Fair Play rules for a second time earlier this season. And the latest reports haven't exactly provided a positive update over the potential takeover.

According to the Financial Times, 777's Everton takeover is set to unravel. The report said: "A Bermudian financial structure used by the Miami-based bidder for Everton Football Club to funnel money invested for widows and orphans into the sport has begun to unravel.”

Given that 777 Partners have reportedly already invested as much as over £160m in Everton, meanwhile, the Toffees could face a nervous wait to see what exactly happens to that loan should the takeover fail to take place. The last thing that those at Goodison Park need is more debt to pay off in the coming months.

Everton face worrying wait

By this point, there's no doubt that Moshiri would have been hoping to have the takeover approved, but the fact that the Premier League are still questioning the Miami-based firm six months after the initial agreement doesn't exactly suggest there's a positive outcome to arrive. And that may even be for the best for the Toffees.

According to Josimir, a document has shown that 777 Partners owed a total of $3.6bn to creditors in the summer of 2023. Meanwhile, Philippe Auclair and Paul Brown also reported that a credit rating agency has slashed the rating of one of the main sources of 777's financing, leading to even more doubts over their credibility.

With that said, it looks set to be an interesting few months in Merseyside, as Everton look to stay afloat on the pitch and receive the financial boost to ensure that they survive away from it. Whether 777 Partners are the ones to ensure that however, remains to be seen.

Arsenal struck gold with a star who’d be worth more than Martinelli today

Arsenal have come a long way under the guidance of Mikel Arteta from midtable mediocrity to genuine title challengers.

Alongside Edu Gaspar, the Spaniard has overseen a dramatic overhaul of the playing squad, although there have been a few survivors from the one he inherited in December 2019, such as Gabriel Martinelli.

The Brazilian is now one of the most important players at the club, and his soaring value has come to reflect that reality.

Jorginho-martinelli-arsenal
Jorginho-martinelli-arsenal

Gabriel Martinelli's valuation at Arsenal

Martinelli joined the Gunners in the summer of 2019 for just £6m from Brazilian fourth-tier outfit Ituano to little fanfare and meagre expectations. After all, he was a teenager nobody in England had heard of before.

However, he quickly showed people who he was, scoring ten goals and providing four assists in just 26 games in his first season at the club. Had he not suffered three injuries that saw him miss 188 days of action, he'd have likely ended the season with an even more impressive record.

Over the subsequent two campaigns, the Guarulhos-born gem produced just 17 goal involvements in 58 appearances. Still, he truly came into a league of his own last year, scoring 15 goals, providing six assists and playing a pivotal role in the north Londoners' surprise title charge.

The 22-year-old hasn't quite hit the heights of last season so far this year, but his return of eight goals and five assists in 32 games has still been invaluable, as has his tireless running.

Martinelli's growing importance to the team has been reflected in his soaring valuation over the last four and a half years, with Football Transfers' Expected Value model pricing him at just €4m – £3m – when he signed in July 2019, and at €64m – £55m today, and at this rate, he's sure to become more valuable than a former Arsenal star would be worth today.

Alexis Sanchez's valuation in 2024

Yes, the Arsenal star in question is Chilean magician and controversial figure Alexis Sanchez, and while his departure from the club has unquestionably sullied his image in north London, his brilliance over the three and a half years he spent at the Emirates cannot be denied.

During his unbelievable stint in red and white, the "special" winger, as described by Bukayo Saka, scored 80 goals and provided 45 assists in just 166 games, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 0.75 games, which is a record that frankly isn't talked about enough.

The magical talent won the PFA Fans' Player of the Year award in his first season at the club, played a crucial role in the Gunners' 2015 and 2017 FA Cup triumphs, and won three Community Shields to boot.

In all, while his move to Manchester United has ruined his legacy in the eyes of most Arsenal fans, his outrageously good performances shouldn't be forgotten – but how much would he be worth today?

This question can be answered thanks to the clever people at Totally Money, who have crunched the numbers and run the calculations to tell us.

They have calculated that the £38.2m Arsenal paid Barcelona for his services in July 2014 would be worth almost double that today, coming in at around £68.8m, or about £13m more than Martinelli is currently worth.
