Inside Paul Pogba's nightmare Juventus return: Injuries, blackmail and a fan backlash

The former Manchester United star is finally set to make his second debut for the Bianconeri, seven months after returning to Turin…

Paul Pogba's back!… Well, hopefully. The France international has been included in the Juventus squad for Tuesday's Serie A clash with Torino, but nobody is getting ahead of themselves. The Bianconeri have been burned before, after all.

Indeed, Pogba's return to Turin has just been one big, long disappointment to date, featuring one injury setback after another.

So, as the midfielder looks to belatedly make his second debut for the Bianconeri, GOAL breaks down a seemingly dream deal for Juve that has thus far proven a nightmare for everyone involved…

  • Injury issues

"Paul is back in Turin. He left as a boy and returns as a man and a champion, but there is one thing that has not changed – the desire to write unforgettable pages of club history together once more. Pogba is back and we couldn’t be happier."

That official statement confirming Pogba's return to Juventus last summer perfectly encapsulated the excitement surrounding the free transfer.

And it was understandable, to a degree. Juve had paid nothing to re-sign a player they had sold to Manchester United in 2016 for a then-world record £89 million ($100m).

He was still only 29, too. The hope was that the Bianconeri would at least get a couple more stellar seasons out of Pogba, who had played the best football of his club career during his first stint in Turin.

However, there were two major doubts surrounding the deal.

Firstly, Pogba was not joining a Juve squad with anything like the same level of quality as the one he had left, and there had long been concerns over his ability to shine without world-class players around him.

Secondly, and far more significantly, Pogba's recent injury record at Old Trafford could not be construed as anything but troubling.

In his final three seasons in Manchester, he had been sidelined with injury on eight separate occasions, and with a variety of ailments. His final appearance for United had actually come in April of last year, when he limped off in a 4-0 defeat at Liverpool.

There was, then, a legitimate question mark over Pogba's fitness, and it would not take long for us to get an answer…

    A hugely controversial call

Pogba officially rejoined Juve on July 11. Less than two weeks later, he broke down in training ahead of a pre-season friendly with Barcelona in Dallas.

"Following complaining of pain in his right knee, Paul Pogba underwent radiological examinations that revealed a lesion of the lateral meniscus," the club explained. "In the next few hours he will undergo a specialist orthopaedic consultation. Therefore, in order to continue treatment, he is not taking part in the trip to Dallas."

As it transpired, he would not take part in either of Juve's two remaining friendlies in the United States, with 45 minutes against Chivas de Guadalajara ending up the sum total of his contribution to the entire tour.

He instead returned to Italy on July 23 for further evaluation before then flying to Lyon on August 1 to consult a knee specialist. The following day, he made a hugely controversial call, deciding against surgery and opting instead to undergo a more 'conservative' therapy.

Allegri's public response to Pogba's preferred course of action was telling. "What do I think? I don't think, I have relied on what was said and the decision that was made. I'm not a doctor," he told reporters at the time.

"Conservative therapy has been adopted, within five-to-six weeks he will be able to be on the field. You have to have confidence. That was the decision, then we'll see if it was right or wrong."

Pogba's thinking was obvious: he wanted to play in the World Cup, and he didn't want to jeopardise his participation in Qatar 2022 by undergoing an operation.

It would prove a very costly error of judgement, though, a gamble that backfired badly…

  • His brother and attempted blackmail

A month of this 'conservative' therapy failed to yield the desired result and, on September 3, Pogba belatedly underwent surgery on his knee.

"The operation went very well, I'm going to recover and come back very, very quickly," he vowed in a social media post. "I wanted to thank you all for your messages, for your support.

"Know that mentally I'm okay despite all the worries, the injury, and the other problems."

Those other problems were no trifling matter. Indeed, it's important to note that Pogba's injury struggles were played out against the backdrop of a devastating familial drama.

On August 28, Pogba's brother Mathias posted a video online promising "explosive" revelations about the midfielder, and his agent, Rafaela Pimenta.

“The French, Italian, English and Spanish public deserve to know certain things,” Mathias’ Pogba said. “Basically, the whole world, including my brother’s fans, France, Juventus and his sponsors, they need to have the information and take an informed decision on whether he deserves respect and love from the fans; if he deserves to play for Juventus and a place in the France World Cup squad.

“I want to open the eyes on the so-called most powerful woman in football, who my brother calls his second mum (Pimenta). I think that what I’ll say will concern many people. I’ll say important things about Kylian Mbappe. Many elements and witnesses confirm what I’ll say. It could be explosive.”

Pogba's legal team immediately confirmed that they were already aware of the claims – which included an allegation that the player had hired a witchdoctor to place a spell on France team-mate Mbappe, of whom he was supposedly jealous – and explained that they were linked to an extortion plot by an organised crime gang.

Pogba had already informed French police that he had been threatened by two hooded men armed with assault rifles in Paris on March 19 of last year and, among other things, had his mobile phone taken away from him, as well as being ordered to pay £11 million ($14m) in owed 'protection fees'. Pogba had also gone to the Italian authorities after being subject to further threats and acts of intimidation in Turin.

Four people, including Mathias, were eventually arrested on September 14, though the former forward was released from prison on December 23.

  • World Cup woe

After Pogba had finally gone under the knife, it was expected that he would be sidelined for eight weeks.

However, just after resuming athletic work, Pogba was struck down by a thigh problem just above his weakened right knee on October 19, casting considerable doubt on his availability for the World Cup.

The bad news was finally confirmed by Pimenta on October 31: "Following yesterday and today's medical review in Torino and Pittsburgh, it is extremely painful to inform Paul will still need recovery time from his surgery.

"For this reason, Paul will not be able to join the Juventus squad before the World Cup break nor the French national team in Qatar.

"If wishful thinking would change things, Paul would be playing tomorrow. But what changes things are hard work, resilience and discipline, all of which are the only things in Paul's mind at these challenging times.

"Paul will continue working, giving his very best to be back on the pitch for the fans and his team as soon as possible."

Lionel Messi's Inter Miami contract: How much will Argentine earn in wages & will he be paid more than Cristiano Ronaldo?

Lionel Messi gave the football world the answers they were looking for when revealing that his next adventure will come in MLS with Inter Miami.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner will be moving to Florida as a free agent after taking the decision not to extend his contract at Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona and several clubs in the Middle East had been keen on acquiring the iconic Argentine, but the 2022 World Cup winner is heading to the United States.

Unsurprisingly, a lucrative deal is waiting for Messi in America, but how much is that worth and will he once again be rivalling Cristiano Ronaldo in the highest-earner stakes? GOAL takes a look…

What is Lionel Messi’s salary at Inter Messi?

Messi is reported to have agreed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Inter Miami, with a 12-month option for 2026 included within those terms. A complicated agreement, which has reportedly seen Apple and Adidas contribute towards making the move possible that stands to benefit everyone in the long run, will see Messi earn a base salary alongside bonuses.

Messi’s contract is said to be worth between $125m-$150m (£100m-£120m), with MLS sponsors Apple and Adidas working on deals that will be based on the amount of revenue that the legendary South American helps to generate. There could also be an ownership stake in place for Messi, similar to the one given to David Beckham when he arrived in the league.

Is Lionel Messi a Designated Player at Inter Miami?

The Designated Player Rule was introduced by MLS in 2007 to help attract Manchester United and Real Madrid legend Beckham to the league. Each side is allowed three players on their roster that sit outside of the standard salary caps imposed by the division.

This gives teams the flexibility to make marquee signings on big contracts without impacting the financial structure of the American game. Messi will fill one of the spots at Inter Miami, although they have some work to do before his arrival in early July as Josef Martinez, Rodolfo Pizarro, and Gregore currently occupy the DP places at DRV PNK Stadium. It is likely that Gregore will be changed to a standard roster player to compensate.

  • Getty

How does Lionel Messi’s contract compare to Cristiano Ronaldo’s at Al-Nassr?

While Messi is set to become the highest-earning player in MLS, his wages will still sit some way below that of eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo and the record-setting contract that he committed to when joining Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Nassr in January 2023.

The Portuguese superstar is earning around £177m ($221m) per year in the Middle East, with £62m ($77m) of that coming in annual base salary and the rest made up of image rights and commercial deals. Ronaldo’s contribution to Saudi Arabia’s bid for 2030 World Cup hosting duties could net him a further £177m.

Indeed, Messi revealed after his Inter Miami announcement that he may have chosen to move to Arabia, had money been his motivation.

Who was the top earner in MLS before Lionel Messi’s arrival?

Messi will be jumping straight to the top of the MLS top earners chart, with some considerable distance set to be put between himself and the second-placed entry on that list. As things stand, former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri boasts the biggest paycheck in American soccer, with the Swiss star pulling in a little over $8.1m (£6.5m) with the Chicago Fire during the 2023 campaign.

Toronto FC forward Lorenzo Insigne earns $7.5m (£6m), while Mexican striker Javier Hernandez – who has previously spent time with Manchester United and Real Madrid – nets around $7.4m ($6m) with the LA Galaxy.

Why are Barcelona stars missing from Spain's 2023 Women's World Cup squad? Absences of Patri Guijarro, Mapi Leon and more explained

Stars from Barca, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Manchester Utd and more will not play for Spain at the World Cup. Why?

In the build-up to the 2023 Women's World Cup, no nation has had more uncertainty surrounding its squad than Spain. That's because in the weeks that followed the 2022 Women's Euros, 15 members of the team withdrew from selection, six of whom would be key to a Barcelona side that lifted the Women's Champions League trophy in June.

But when Spain head coach Jorge Vilda named his provisional squad for the World Cup just 11 days after that European final, a handful of those players had returned to the fold and made themselves available for their national team again. Alexia Putellas, the two-time Ballon d'Or winner, was also back after recovering from her ACL injury.

What has the dispute been about? Which players are back and who remains away from the international scene? How will this impact Spain's Women's World Cup campaign? GOAL has everything you need to know…

  • When did 15 of Spain's players withdraw from selection?

It was on September 23, 2022, that 15 players – with the support of the injured Putellas – collectively posted a statement confirming they did not wish to be picked for the national team.

"We requested in our communication sent to the RFEF [the Spanish football federation] not to be summoned until situations that affect our emotional and personal state, our performance and, consequently, the results of the Selection and that could lead to undesirable injuries are reversed," it said.

The news came a few weeks after a number of senior figures in the team had made it known that they felt a fresh start was required after the Euros, at which Spain were eliminated in the quarter-finals by England.

"We believe that there are internal aspects that they can change," explained Barcelona defender Irene Paredes. "We would have liked it to have stayed inside but there are things that have been leaked that are not true. There are times when things have to be said, even if it is not pleasant, for them to change."

The RFEF responded to the player revolt with a statement which rejected the idea of players pressuring the association into making changes to the coaching team, claiming that the behaviour was "far from exemplary and outside the values of football and sport".

The association stated that it would "only have committed footballers" and made it clear that those who had taken the action of emailing the association would only be considered for selection again if they were to apologise.

The 15 players who emailed the federation came from six different clubs, with six of them representing Spanish champions Barcelona. Putellas was injured at the time and therefore was unavailable for selection anyway but did share the same statement as the 15 at the same time.

Despite speaking about issues she felt could change, Paredes was not one of the 15 names. Jenni Hermoso, who also spoke openly about the situation, was not either, though she did share a message expressing her "unconditional support" for the 15 players in the days that followed.

Why did the 15 players withdraw from selection?

reported that the emails of resignation referred to recent events within the national team that had "significantly" impacted the players' "emotional state". Much of this was reflected in the statement posted by the 15, which read as follows.

"First of all, the players are sorry about how RFEF has publicised, on a partial and biased way, a private communication that affects our health, which is part of our privacy, sent in reply to the own federation to know who of us did not want to be summoned. Communication which, by the way, has not been replied in any way.

"Secondly, in no case have we renounced the Spanish national team as RFEF points out in its official communication. As we said in our private communication, we have always maintained, we do maintain and will always maintain an indisputable commitment to the Spanish national team.

"That is why we request in our communication addressed to RFEF not to be summoned until the situations which affect our emotional and personal state, are reverted it would also affect our performance, and consequently, the results of the national team and could lead to undesirable injuries. These are the reasons that lead us to take this decision.

"We want a firm commitment for a professional project in which all aspects will be cared to get the best performance from a group of players with whom we consider more and better objectives can be achieved. We wish the best for RFEF, the women's Spanish national team, and ourselves in particular, without getting into public wars.

"We have never requested the coach's cessation as has been said. We understand that our job is not, under any circumstances, to choose somebody for that position. However, we wanted to express in a constructive and honest way what we consider can be an improvement in the performance of the group.

"Can anybody think that, eight months before the World Cup, a group of high level players, which is what we consider ourselves, are considering this decision, as it has been publicly insinuated, as a whim or blackmail?

"Requesting not to be summoned, we penalise our professional careers, our economy and of course keep on building something important in feminine football. Because getting where we are now has been lots of years of effort for a lot of people. And there are a lot of things to improve, as it has been proved recently.

"From our ambition as players, fighters and winners we just want to be able to get the most professional and personal successes. Last but not least, we are not going to tolerate the tone of immaturity with which RFEF finishes its communication.

"We are sorry that in the context of feminine sport we have to get to this length, as it has happened in other national teams and other sports historically at world level, to be able to make progress in a professional and powerful project and ambitious for the present and future generations."

What happened without those 15 players?

In the months that followed, those 15 names remained away from the national team and Vilda instead called up a wide range of young and uncapped players.

"My solution is this list," the coach said upon the announcement of his squad for the November international break. "I don't see, for now, another solution. I have to call up the players who want to be here 100 per cent."

These players came together well to produce a string of very good results. La Roja beat the world champions, the United States, in October and would lose just once in nine games without the 15 star names that had withdrawn from selection.

Two players would return in the early months of 2023 – though not from that list of 15. In February, Hermoso represented Spain for the first time since early September 2022. Two months later, Paredes did the same.

Making the Lionesses tick: Keira Walsh holds the key to England winning the Women's World Cup

A European champion at club and international level and the most-expensive women's player of all time, Walsh is set to be key for the Lionesses again

It was less than two weeks after England’s triumph at Euro 2022 when the Ballon d’Or nominees were announced, and Lucy Bronze was not happy. The full-back was included on the list, alongside fellow Lionesses Millie Bright and Beth Mead, but she could not help but point out a particularly shocking omission.

"Thanks but I don't deserve this," Bronze wrote on Instagram. "The best Lionesses player during the Euros was Keira Walsh. Should be the first English name in the list!"

It was typical of Walsh’s role that she was overlooked, with her contributions as a deep-lying playmaker so often going unnoticed. But in the last year, it feels like that recognition has really started to be heaped onto a player who certainly deserves it.

A couple of months after the Euros ended, the 26-year-old became the most-expensive player in the history of women’s football as Barcelona, the 2021 European champions, saw it fit to pay a record-breaking fee for her talents.

Walsh has since lifted that Women’s Champions League trophy for the first time, as well as a couple of domestic honours, and is mixing it with some of the best midfielders in the world – all while still winning big praise for her own qualities. Indeed, Caroline Graham Hansen, one of her team-mates in Catalunya, said recently that Barca are “very lucky to have her”.

Off the back of a wonderful first season abroad, Walsh is now looking to deliver more success for England, and if the Lionesses do go on to back that European title up with a first ever Women’s World Cup triumph, there is no doubt that their talented midfield conductor will be key.

  • Getty

    Quietly impressive

A tidy player with excellent technical ability, Walsh became a fixture at Manchester City during her eight years there, with her vision and ability to execute a pass making her a deadly playmaker in a deeper role.

So often, though, it was the players in front of her that got the plaudits. Jill Scott, Izzy Christiansen, Caroline Weir and Sam Mewis all played in front of her in City’s midfield and were named to the PFA Team of the Year. Walsh never featured in the XI.

But it’s the work she does in that holding role that allows the rest of the midfield the freedom to thrive, for club and for country. There's a reason why she became basically indispensable for City, subbed off just twice in the league from the start of the 2017-18 season all the way through to the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

Sadly, she was just thriving in a position that so often doesn’t get the plaudits.

  • Getty

    Adding strings to her bow

That recognition started to come after the Euros. Walsh won the big trophy, was named Player of the Match in the final, made the Team of the Tournament and was named to the FIFPRO World XI, too. Oh, and she signed for Barcelona for a world-record fee.

It was a move that took her completely out of her comfort zone. The midfielder was born and raised just outside of Manchester and had always played for teams in the area. Now she was moving to a new country and joining a club with a unique style of play, one that demands the most from those in the middle of the park.

Walsh spoke a lot during the past season about it being difficult to adapt to the different things that were wanted of her at Barca, but that she’s got to grips with it all has made her a better player, one with even more to her game.

“As a player at City, I was told to stand still a lot more and to wait for the ball to come to me,” she said recently, explaining the differences. “Whereas at Barca it’s about moving all the time and most of the play goes through the middle so I always have to be an option.

“I think I’m probably fitter and sharper than I was in terms of trying to look for the ball and defensively they’re a lot more streetwise, in terms of tactical fouls and trying to slow the game down. That’s something I’ve added to my game.”

"Playing with Keira, it makes football easier,” team-mate Patri Guijarro said after the Champions League final. That’s quite a glowing review.

  • Getty Images

    Adapting to those around her

Part of Walsh’s growth has been about adapting to playing with different players, too. It’s something she’s done a lot over her career, of course, with her partner at the base of England’s midfield changing extremely close to the start of the Euros just last year. However, she has never had to do it on the scale that she has at Barca.

As one of Europe’s biggest clubs, the Catalans have incredible depth and, in order to compete on four fronts, they rotate a lot. In fact, Walsh was a part of nine different midfield trios when named to Barca’s starting XI this past season, sometimes playing as a lone holding midfielder, sometimes as one of two and very often alongside players with unique skillsets.

It's an important quality to have when it comes to tournament football, where so much can change so quickly, but also when you look at the new players in this England team.

Walsh might have new wingers or a new centre-forward to find with her defence-splitting passes, or even a new face in that No.10 role to link up with. It’s certainly a strength that she’s become used to learning to play with so many new faces in such a short space of time.

    Gaining big experiences

All of that quality that Walsh was able to bring to the Barca team helped them to achieve what was top of their list in pre-season and win the Champions League again. It was the England star’s first time lifting the prestigious trophy and Bronze, who also joined Barca last summer, believes the whole experience has had an impact on both herself and her team-mate – and, in turn, the Lionesses.

“It’s given me a different outlook on how to play football,” she said of moving to Catalunya. “I think Keira is the same. I think the pair of us drive a different kind of standard now at England training that has never been there before.

“I think we’ve been able to add that when we’ve come back into camps, not the style of play necessarily but the expectation and the kind of the quality you expect from a team that wins trophies like Champions Leagues and playing with the best players in the world.”

Made in the USA! USMNT stars Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah combine as AC Milan top Genoa in chaotic clash that sees both goalkeepes sent off

  • Pulisic scores late winner
  • Musah with the assist
  • Milan win 1-0

Milan emerged victorious from a chaotic match against Genoa that saw one late winner and red cards for goalkeepers on both sides. By the end of it, though, it was Pulisic that was the hero, with Musah teeing him up for the game's only goal that could be massive in the title race.

Pulisic's goal came in the 87th minute, kickstarting a series of events that led to Olivier Giroud having his own heroic moment as he made several key plays as fill-in goalkeeper to help AC Milan preserve a win no one at the stadium will ever forget.

  • Getty

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Prior to the 87th minute, Milan looked destined to leave Genoa with a drab draw. Even with Pulisic and Rafael Leao in the match as second-half substitutes, Milan never quite got going for nearly the entirety of the match.

That was until Musah floated a cross into the box in the game's final moments, allowing Pulisic to create his moment of magic and win all three points.

The goal wasn't without controversy, as both sides waited on a VAR review after celebrations subsided. Pulisic, though, was deemed to have controlled the ball off his chest, not his hand, as the goal stood.

That was only the start of the chaos, though, as, in stoppage time, AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan was sent off with a straight red card for a collision outside of the box. Olivier Giroud was forced in goal, as Genoa hit the ensuing free kick off the crossbar.

In the ensuing scramble, though, Genoa goalkeeper Josep Martinez earned a dismissal of his own, making him the second goalkeeper to be sent off in the match. In the end, though, Milan were able to hold on, with Giroud making a late save before being mobbed by teammates in celebration.

With the win, Milan go top of the league, two points ahead of rivals Inter and four points ahead of Juventus, who sit in third.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pioli went with a clearly-rotated side, with his go-to front three of Pulisic, Leao and Giroud all left on the bench after all three started in the draw with Borussia Dortmund midweek.

Musah, though, retained his place as the American has slowly been building his way into Pioli's starting XI. The ex-Valencia star has started three of the club's last five games and appeared as a substitute in the other two.

Milan are dealing with injuries in the midfield as Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Rade Krunic and Ismael Bennacer are all out, so it'll be up to Musah to retain his place as that unit moves closer to full fitness. His assist will surely help though.

As for Pulisic, that's now four goals on the season for the American, who continues to shine in Serie A. He's essentially indispensable now as he continues to be a match-winner for his new club.

    USMNT IMPACT

The upcoming camp will be a big one for Musah, so the USMNT will be glad to see him playing significant minutes on the club level.

Tyler Adams will once again be out for the international break, as the Bournemouth star is dealing with a reaggravated hamstring injury that will seemingly keep him out for some time. As a result, the U.S. will be without their primary No. 6, putting further pressure on Musah and Weston McKennie without the A in the MMA midfield.

Gregg Berhalter could opt to invert the midfield by playing a No. 10 with Musah and McKennie as the two deep-lying midfielders. He could also play a No. 6 like Luca de la Torre, Johnny Cardoso or newcomer Lennard Maloney behind them.

Either way, Musah getting minutes, and contributing, is great news for the U.S., both in the short-term ahead of this camp and in the long-term as the 20-year-old midfielder continues his development as a player.

    GOAL'S RATINGS

    Yunus Musah (7/10):

It was all about the assist, as Musah played a magnificent ball in for Pulisic on the match-winning sequence. Before that, Musah was solid enough in the Milan midfield, although he did walk the line after getting a yellow card.

    Christian Pulisic (8/10):

Came into the game and created some moments of danger, including one that was blocked away. He did get his goal, though, with a fantastic bit of skill to kickstart all of the chaos that followed.

The Dragons headed to Nevada over the summer after bringing a 15-year absence from the Football League to a close. On the back of a record-setting push out of the National League, club co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney rewarded the players in North Wales with an all-expenses-paid visit to Sin City.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

A number of fresh faces have joined since then, while Jones – who has signed a new contract this season – is looking to wrap up back-to-back promotions. He has said of the ultimate goals at SToK Racecourse: “I will keep working hard and keep pushing for another promotion. That's what we are here to do, that is the aim. It is a tough league to get out of, it is competitive and anyone can beat anyone. It is not going to be a piece of cake but everyone knows what we are trying to do. It would be pointless to say promotion is not the aim, and that is what you want to be a part of as a player. You want to be playing in important games and trying to push for promotions. Everyone buys into that so it is down to us to produce that.”

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Phil Parkinson is working with a talented squad at Wrexham, with Jones hoping that fierce competition for places will keep everybody on their toes and collective standards high. He added: "We have got a fantastic squad. The strength in depth we have got is ridiculous. I am sure it is tough for the gaffer to pick a team each week and it is up to us to keep making it tough for him because you know there is someone waiting for the shirt. Everyone wants to be playing, whether that is the league or the cup."

Girona have been the team of the season, they have won 11 games and are now atop the division with 34 points after playing very fine football so far. They are also the league's top scorers with 31 goals, two more than Atletico Madrid.
