Newcastle fans react to Justin Allen’s takeover tweet

[ad_pod ]

Even though just weeks ago it looked like a done deal, it now seems that Newcastle United may be much further away from a successful takeover than was initially clear.

On May 27, The Sun’s Justin Allen reported that a deal had been agreed and the Dubai-based billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan would take over the Magpies, succeeding Mike Ashley.

But in typical Ashley fashion, fans have since been left totally in the dark over the potential deal and there seems to be absolutely no concrete signs of progression towards a successful takeover.

Whatever the case, fans are now fuming as Allen, the journalist who broke the original story, seemed to begin covering his bases on Twitter this week.

The reporter tweeted that he never once said a deal was complete, and to be fair he didn’t, he simply said that the deal was agreed, and that the contracts had been signed and submitted to the Premier League.

However, several of the Toon Army think Allen is backtracking, prompting fears that the takeover is in fact a ‘fakeover’.

If he is confident in his sources, it does seem a little suspicious that the journalist would reply to a Newcastle fan with the hashtag “don’t shoot the messenger”, and the Twitter reactions down below are very pessimistic indeed…

West Brom Transfer Roundup: Bayliss interest, Barry update, Hegazi to stay

[ad_pod ]

West Brom have so far made just one signing this summer, with Filip Krovinovic arriving on a one-year loan deal. It remains to be seen whether they will add to that haul. Today’s Baggies transfer roundup reports on interest in a League One midfielder, news on the departure of a 16-year-old and an update on the future of an Egyptian international.

Bayliss on radar

The Sun is reporting that West Brom are interested in Coventry City’s Tom Bayliss. Premier League duo Aston Villa and Sheffield United are also pursuing the 20-year-old midfielder, who has made 73 appearances during his time with the Sky Blues.

West Brom angry with Barca over Barry

West Brom officials are angry with the way Barcelona have dealt with their capture of Louie Barry according to Sky Sports. The Catalan club “confirmed” the signing of the youngster on Wednesday, but the Baggies are apparently yet to sign off on all the transfer forms.

Hegazi to stay

Ahmed Hegazi is going nowhere this summer according to Birmingham Live. Aston Villa were reportedly interested in the 28-year-old, whilst Okaz (via KingFut) had said that the defender was close to moving to former side Al Ahli. However, he is now expected to join up with his Albion teammates once he has returned from holiday.

Leeds can present Bielsa with a big dilemma in Australia

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds officially touched down in Australia over the weekend as they gear up for their pre-season clashes against both Manchester United and Western Sydney Wanderers.

The Whites’ squad is incredibly slim, having picked just 16 members. Not included in that party are a number of first-team faces who have been left behind in order to gain fitness on the training pitch.

Those who haven’t travelled include Mateusz Klich, who is the subject of interest from Burnley, whilst Helder Costa and Jack Clarke have also been left behind.

And with that in mind, it’s now presented a huge opportunity to some fresh faces beginning to enter the first team picture.

On the chalkboard

Marcelo Bielsa may not be in Australia just yet but if and when he does arrive, he could have a huge opportunity to test some of Leeds’ U23 players out.

Last term Jack Clarke was one of the breakthrough players, eventually earning a move to Tottenham before being loaned back, but the four young individuals who are in Australia with the senior team now have a major chance to force Bielsa’s hand next term.

Midfielders Jordan Stevens and Mateusz Bogusz are both in the squad, as are Bryce Hosannah and Clarke Oduor.

Leeds have a number of attacking options so Oduor could find it a struggle to attain regular minutes unless he impresses on the tour. A right winger by trade, he could be on for a similar breakthrough season like Clarke, who plays in the same role, had in 2018/19 if given the platform to do so.

For Bielsa, this is a major opportunity to oversee their talents, but it may also present him with a significant dilemma.

If these young players do well, particularly against United, there should be every reason to give them minutes in the Championship.

After all, there could be openings in midfield if both Klich and Kalvin Phillips, who has also been linked away, depart.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

If they do indeed go, both Stevens and Bogusz could be those to benefit from the individuals coming through the academy at the moment.

The latter hasn’t played for the Leeds first team yet but has experience of senior football in Poland, where he scored five goals in their third tier.

Although pre-season is traditionally about building fitness, it could just spark a predicament for Bielsa if they do well.

How Crystal Palace could line up in the 2019/20 Premier League opener

[long_read]

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace kick off their 2019/20 campaign at home against Everton on 10th August and they will be hoping to get off to a flying start.

There will be some concern, however, as the Eagles were far better on their travels last season, picking up some of their best results on the road – including memorable wins over Manchester City and Arsenal.

Last term, this fixture ended a 0-0 stalemate, many thanks due to Vicente Guaita, who kept out Cenk Tosun’s brilliant back-heel to keep the scores level late on, ensuring a perhaps undeserved point for the south London outfit.

The Toffees have already completed some savvy business this summer – snapping up Fabian Delph for just £10m and making Andre Gomes’ switch from Barcelona permanent.

Whereas Stephen Henderson, who endured a nightmare debut in the 6-2 loss to Barnet on Tuesday evening, remains Palace’s sole signing of the window so far.

Roy Hodgson and co have already said goodbye to Aaron Wan-Bissaka and question marks remain over the future of Wilfried Zaha, whom the former England manager’s entire attacking philosophy is built around.

Depending on injuries, potential departures, how Palace intend to reinvest the Wan-Bissaka cash, Hodgson’s approach to the game and his willingness to integrate youngsters, there are plenty of different ways in which the Red and Blue Army could lineup.

Click through the gallery below to see our five potential XIs for their opening day fixture…

[snack_break title=”Dream XI”]

Christian Benteke is running out of – and missing plenty of – chances at Selhurst Park, Connor Wickham is perennially injured and Alexander Sorloth doesn’t look quite up to the pace of the Premier League.

Therefore, bringing in a prolific striker to take the goal scoring burden off of Zaha and Andros Townsend is an absolute must for Steve Parish this summer.

With Che Adams having already signed for Southampton, Palace may turn to Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata, whom they were linked to by The Sun (print edition 19/5, page 63) in June, to solve their centre-forward woes.

The big Colombian enjoyed a stellar 2018/19 season with the Serie A outfit, netting an impressive 28 goals in 48 appearances. He’s exactly the aggressive and aware striker Palace need to tap home those low crosses into the box and force opportunities for the wingers.

In the video below, find out which Chelsea academy prospect is reportedly being lined up to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Crystal Palace…

Meanwhile, Wan-Bissaka’s departure leaves a lack of depth at right-back and Zapata’s teammate, Timothy Castagne, looks a solid replacement – the Belgian is capable in defence while also being a threat on the front foot.

He chalked up five goals and five assists in 37 appearances, while Wan-Bissaka managed just four assists all season.

A recent report from Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness) has suggested that Palace are determined in their endeavour to bring him to south London, but the same report claims the 23-year-old is in discussions over an extension to his current deal.

Palace fans can continue to dream for now.

[snack_break title=”Nightmare XI”]

With talisman Zaha’s status as a Palace player next season far from confirmed, Eagles fans could see their side line up without their most important forward on 10th August if one of the big sides can match the club’s £80m valuation.

This alone is nightmarish enough a scenario, but it could get even worse.

Both James Tomkins and Mamadou Sakho struggled with injuries throughout the 2018/19 season and, if either suffer any further setbacks before next month, Palace fans could see an uninspiring duo of Scott Dann and Martin Kelly at the heart of defence next term.

The pair deputised capably at the back end of last campaign but their shortcomings were somewhat exposed in the win over Leicester when Kelly scored an own goal and Dann’s lack of pace was a concern throughout.

If this combination is a worry, the pairing upfront will likely have many at the club tearing their hair out – Wickham and Benteke netted just one league goal between them last term.

[snack_break title=”Progressive XI”]

Wan-Bissaka’s meteoric rise since making his first-team debut in February 2018 indicates that Palace have some real quality coming through the academy and it’s just a matter of unearthing it.

Tyrick Mitchell impressed Eagles fans in their pre-season victory over FC Luzern with an incredible last-ditch challenge and, given Patrick van Aanholt’s lack of defensive awareness, it could only be a matter of time before the 19-year-old benches the Dutch international.

James Daly, meanwhile, could be a cost-free solution to Palace’s striker problem. The 19-year-old netted four goals in nine appearances for the Under-23’s last season and nine in 13 the term before. There’s no reason as to why Hodgson shouldn’t give the youngster a shot in 2019/20.

Max Meyer should be given a chance in the 10 role, where he can roam freely and pull the strings.

The German is certainly capable of becoming the advanced, creative hub the Eagles need and will surely improve on his tally of three assists last term.

[snack_break title=”Realistic XI”]

While seeing the likes of Meyer start ahead of workhorse James McArthur, Hodgson has his preferences and it’s likely that the Palace boss will opt for the Scotsman and his work ethic ahead of the former Schalke man and his quick feet.

Parish would probably have an angry mob hunting him down if he was to let Zaha follow Wan-Bissaka out the door this summer and so it seems likely that the Ivorian should partner Benteke up front – as he did in the win over the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey Schlupp’s versatility was a huge asset to the SE25 outfit last campaign.

The Ghanaian was deployed at left-wing, left-midfield and central-midfield, while he is also capable of playing at left-back – and he will offer balance to the midfield four given Townsend’s threat going forward.

Manchester United fans react to Newcastle’s interest in Axel Tuanzebe

[ad_pod ]

After an impressive loan spell at Aston Villa last season saw Axel Tuanzebe help the Midlands side to the Premier League, a new long-term contract was waiting at Old Trafford to be signed.

The England U21 international duly put pen to paper on a new deal at Manchester United, and could have had some serious hope about potentially breaking into the Red Devils’ line-up for the upcoming campaign.

However, The Daily Mail claim that Newcastle hold an interest in taking Tuanzebe to St James’ Park this summer, with the Magpies’ boss Steve Bruce already acquainted with the defender.

It was Bruce who initially signed the 21-year-old on loan for Villa whilst he was manager at Villa Park, and the report claims that he would be keen on reuniting with the defender on Tyneside.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

The Daily Mail add that United will not allow Tuanzebe to leave the club until they sign another central defender, and so a move for Harry Maguire could hold all the cards.

After hearing about Newcastle’s interest, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the matter.

Many supporters of the Manchester side insisted that Tuanzebe should not be granted an exit this summer as he was amongst their better central defenders.

Indeed, some suggested that United’s struggles to sign Sean Longstaff should also factor into the club’s thinking when it came to potentially doing a deal with Newcastle.

Check out some of the reaction of United fans below:

West Ham fans have mixed views on Grady Diangana’s potential loan

[ad_pod ]It has been reported that West Bromwich Albion are closing in on the loan signing of West Ham United midfielder Grady Diangana. The 21-year-old made 21 appearances for the Hammers during the 2018-19 campaign – contributing two goals and one assist. It appears that the former England Under-20 international will be spending this season away from the London Stadium, though.Indeed, after a series of reports throughout Wednesday including those from Express and Star and Football.London, Ornstein claimed at around 5pm that Diangana was nearing a switch to Championship side West Brom. The West Ham fans have been on social media offering their views on the situation.[ad_pod ]And it would be fair to say that there are a lot of mixed opinions.Indeed, whilst some would be happy to see Diangana leave this summer, others feel that he will be needed at the club during the 2019-20 campaign.A selection of the Twitter reaction from the supporters can be seen below:

Newcastle now have all the tools for Steve Bruce to go old-school

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Newcastle signed local lad Andy Carroll on Thursday, and the manager who once proclaimed “I’m not really into tactics” may now have all the tools to play the good old-fashioned 4-4-2.

On the chalkboard

It is not known what formation Bruce will play in his debut campaign on Tyneside. The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has varied his tactics in pre-season, testing a three-at-the-back similar to Rafael Benitez’s, while also deploying a 4-5-1, or effectively a 4-2-3-1.

However, looking back to an article from The Guardian way back in 2011, in which the famous “not really into tactics” quote surfaced, the Magpies boss is described as “unashamedly old school” and unable to influence the game tactically.

With that in mind, the arrival of the 6 foot 4 Carroll has us wondering if Bruce has his sights set on an “unashamedly old school” style of play, once Carroll is fully fit.

[ad_pod ]

The perfect partnership

A traditional target man and a skilful speedster, one little one large, it’s the classic centre-forward one-two punch.

Think Emile Heskey and Michael Owen, Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch, or even Carroll himself together with Luis Suarez during their time at Liverpool.

In Sean Longstaff and Jonjo Shelvey, Bruce has two tough-tackling midfielders with good work rates and an eye for a pass. In Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron he has two wingers with the pace to burn past defenders and whip balls into the box.

And now, with the arrival of Carroll, he has the perfect target man to partner Joelinton in a 4-4-2.

The Brazilian won 2.3 aerial duels per game last term, which isn’t too shabby in itself, while Carroll averages a whopping 6.2 aerial wins each match throughout his career.

Joelinton also has uniquely well-rounded capabilities with and without the ball though, bearing a striking resemblance to Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, dribbling, creating and dropping into space, as well as pitching in with goals.

Pairing the 22 year-old up with Carroll then seems a no-brainer. Carroll is power personified, while his new partner in crime does a little bit of everything, and both of them know how to get on the scoresheet.

We’ve had Wenger-ball. We’ve had Sarri-ball. Is it time the Premier League’s most “unashamedly old school” manager brings us Bruce-ball?

Every Club's Record On The Opening Day Of The Premier League Season

The 2019/20 Premier League season is finally here and the array of optimism filters across the country ahead of this weekend.

Opening fixtures are always difficult to predict. New signings, new tactics and a new beginning – what teams will gel together the fastest?

Whether your ambition is survival or pushing for the Premier League title, it is a time for every fan to get excited about the new campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool kickstart the 2019/20 campaign against newly-promoted Norwich City at Anfield and they will be determined to accelerate from the very start.

This season promises to be a thoroughly entertaining spectacle with multiple teams set to contest for a top-six finish; starting the season on a positive note could be the crucial difference between achieving a European spot or mid-table mediocrity.

But what do the stats suggest could happen this weekend? Here is every club’s opening day record in the Premier League from worst to best…

Brighton – W0, D0, L2

The Seagulls narrowly avoided relegation last season and they will be hoping to break their opening day jinx against Watford this weekend.

Brighton have lost both of their opening Premier League match-ups and the closest they came to a result was against Manchester City, but could only hold them off for 70 minutes and lost the match 2-0.

Bournemouth – W1, D0, L3

Eddie Howe has established Bournemouth as a competitive, Premier League side but their opening day stats are not overly impressive – winning just once out of four attempts.

The Cherries host newly-promoted Sheffield United this weekend and is certianly a game they will be eyeing three points from.

Norwich City – W1, D3, L4

Another newly-promoted outfit is Norwich, returning to the top-tier of English football for the first time since 2016.

The Canaries’ only opening day victory was against Sunderland four years ago and it will take something special to beat Liverpool this weekend.

Burnley – W1, D1, L3

Burnley flirted with relegation in the 2018/19 campaign and they will be eager to push themselves away from the drop as early as possible.

The Clarets drew 0-0 against Southampton at St Mary’s on the opening day last season and this weekend the fixture is reversed as they play host to the Saints; finding a winning formula would be an excellent start for Sean Dyche’s men.

Southampton – W2, D10, L8

Southampton have a habit of drawing their opening Premier league fixtures and have done so 50% of the time.

Ralph Hassenhuttl steered the club away from the drop last season and his attacking philosophy could prove too hot to handle this weekend against the aforementioned Burnley.

Leicester City – W2, D5, L6

The Foxes faced a difficult opening encounter last season as they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford and they will clash with another tricky opponent this time around – Wolves.

Leicester have only won twice on the opening day and they will have to be on top of their game if they are to overcome an exciting Wolves outfit.

Watford – W1, D3, L2

The Hornets have participated in six Premier League seasons – only winning one opening day clash.

Watford got off to a flying start last season and beat Brighton 2-0 on the opening day – this fixture repeats itself this weekend and they will be hoping for a similar outcome.

Crystal Palace – W3, D2, L5

Palace have won 30% of their opening Premier League fixtures and they will be seeking to improve that come Saturday.

The Eagles play host to Everton this weekend and they will be desparate to distance themselves from the relegation zone early on.

Newcastle United – W7, D7, L10

Newcastle have played in 24 of the 27 Premier League seasons, winning seven of their opening day encounters.

This weekend they face a testing clash against Arsenal at St James’ Park and they will have to perform to the highest standard if they are to avoid adding another defeat to the stats.

Everton – W7, D11, L8

The Toffees have only ever missed one Premier League season and their opening day record is fairly impressive, averaging 1.23 points per match.

Everton have made some solid signings this summer and they will be optimistic of starting the season fast at Selhurst Park this weekend.

Arsenal fans praise Josh Kroenke after recent interview

[ad_pod ]

It was a productive summer in the transfer market for Arsenal in the end.

The Gunners brought in Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba, Dani Ceballos, Nicolas Pepe, Kieran Tierney and David Luiz, despite having a reported initial transfer budget of just £45m.

One of the faces of the club, Josh Kroenke, has been talking about the reasons behind the difference in transfer policy, claiming the performance in the Europa League final, in which they lost 4-1 to Chelsea, caused the change in thinking.

Could Gabriel Martinelli become Arsenal’s star striker in the not too distant future? Deluded Gooner thinks so in the video below…

“As the second half of the match unfolded, understanding the position we were in and some of the targets as we headed into the summer from a transfer standpoint, we had to rethink some of our strategy based on that last 45 minutes,” he said.

The 39-year-old spoke to BBC Sport about a number of subjects in an extensive interview.

Generally, the Kroenke name is not met with much positivity by the Arsenal fans, and Stan Kroenke in particular has often come under fire. However, it appears that the Gunners supporters are impressed with Josh, and have taken to Twitter to praise him following the interview.

Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama closing in on summer transfer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Victor Wanyama’s exit from Tottenham Hotspur is nearly complete, per Het Nieuwsblad.

What’s the word?

The Kenya international is wanted by Club Brugge, who have offered Wanyama a five-year contract, per the report.

The Spurs midfielder has yet to play for the club this season and struggled throughout last season, making just four Premier League starts.

The Belgian side are keen to secure his signature and the report states that they have already agreed a deal with Spurs.

However, Wanyama has to convince his family that a move to Brugge is the right step for him to make.

No chance at Spurs

Wanyama is remarkably unlikely to make any sort of impact at Spurs this season.

While the club does not tend to play with a defensive midfielder, when they need to, they have Eric Dier and Oliver Skipp who are adept at playing the roles, while Harry Winks is also capable.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Given his injury history, it is a surprise that there are any suitors whatsoever but Brugge have offered him a lifeline.

Wanyama should grab it with both hands and bring the curtain down on his Tottenham career.
