Tottenham Transfer Roundup: Andersen boost, Aarons update, battle to keep midfielder

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen continues to be linked with a move away from North London this summer. However, today’s Spurs transfer roundup does not include an update on the Dane’s future. Instead, there is an update on a teenage target, a boost in regards to the pursuit of a Serie A defender, and a fight to keep hold of an up-and-coming youngster.

Aarons to stay at Norwich

The Daily Mail is reporting that Norwich City will resist all offers for their 19-year-old full-back Max Aarons this summer. Spurs have been linked with the Englishman, but the Canaries want to keep the player as they return to the Premier League.

Andersen looking to move

Sampdoria’s Joachim Andersen has indicated that he is looking to move on from the club this summer. He told Goal.com, “It could be time for me to further my career. I have loved my time in Sampdoria – the fans, the president, the staff, the players, the city – but maybe it’s time to move on to develop further”. Tottenham have previously been credited with an interest.

Spurs face fight to keep Oakley-Boothe

Spurs face a battle to keep hold of their 19-year-old midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe according to the print edition of the Mirror (19/06/2019, page 48). The player has just 12 months left on his contract and is considering his future with the Lilywhites amid interest from other clubs.

Why a top dribbler should be a priority signing for Unai Emery and Arsenal this summer

[ad_pod ]

Unai Emery’s first term as Arsenal manager is over and it’s left us with much to ponder, namely how the Spaniard is going to utilise the summer transfer window to further tweak the team to his liking despite a limited budget of £40m.

Provided that there are no high-profile exits, Emery and his scouting team are going to have their work cut out finding a player who won’t just slot seamlessly into the side but also make an improvement where necessary. And if there’s one area in need of addressing most, it’s the lack of a top dribbler to carry the ball up the pitch.

What are Arsenal missing?

In Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, the Gunners have the firepower to knock out any team in the top flight, but the pair are crying out for a classy winger who can carve a chance out of nowhere by beating one or two men with ease and whipping passes into the front-men, or using his dribbling ability to draw defenders away and create space in dangerous areas.

Wingers are usually the most prolific dribblers in any team anyway, but the fact Emery spent much of last season using wing-backs rather than wide-men, fielding formations requiring them on 13 occasions in the Premier League alone, further highlights the areas where Arsenal are desperately lacking right now.

But it’s also a concern throughout the whole team; the Emirates Stadium outfit ranked 12th for dribbles completed per Premier League game last season with 8 and were the worst of the top-six in that department – Chelsea and Manchester City topped the standings with 11.8 and 11.5, respectively – according to WhoScored.

Current options out wide include Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but they completed just 2.1 dribbles per game between them on average with the Nigerian international ranking joint-highest throughout the squad on 1.3.

When you look at the stats in per 90-minute metrics, due to the fact over a third of Iwobi’s Premier League appearances last season were as a substitute, the situation does improve slightly – 2.1 successful dribbles produced. But when compared to other Premier League players (to have played more than ten times) by the same parameters, that would only seal him a place in the division’s top 25 dribblers.

Clearly, it’s an asset missing from Unai Emery’s armoury. So who should Arsenal consider signing in the coming months to add a different dimension to their attack?

Player Profile: Who fits the bill?

The north Londoners would be a different beast with a pacy wide-man, whose dribbling ability can stretch a defence and open up gaps for the Gunners’ big-hitting forwards to get in behind. Iwobi has the technique and footwork but he is wasteful when opportunities arise and lacks truly scintillating speed. Arsenal need someone who can combine dribbling ability with pace and ideally a killer pass – it’s frightening to think how many goals Aubameyang and Lacazette could score supported by a winger who can take two defenders out the game on a regular basis. So who fits the bill?

Yannick Carrasco: The former Atletico Madrid man has already been linked with a switch to the Emirates Stadium, with Dalian Yifang reportedly demanding £25m for his services this summer. Carrasco completed an impressive 3.6 dribbles per game in the 2018 Chinese Super League, while also chalking up seven goals and five assists in 25 appearances. The 25-year-old still has plenty to give for a top club and he could be a shrewd signing at the reported price.

Allan Saint-Maximin: The French flyer completed a whopping 4.2 dribbles per game for Nice in Ligue 1 last season, while his six goals, three assists and 1.7 key passes per game also indicate that there’s usually an end product there as well. At just 22 years old, the speedster is an exciting prospect. He’s been linked with Newcastle, Everton and Crystal Palace this summer, so it certainly looks like a winnable transfer race for the Gunners should they throw their red and white hat in the ring.

Check out the video below to find out why Arsenal fans aren’t celebrating Spurs’ UCL final defeat as much as they’d like…

Wilfried Zaha: There’s next to no chance of Arsenal bringing the electric Ivorian to north London if they don’t sell a few players themselves, with Crystal Palace having reportedly slapped an £80m price tag on their star man’s head. There’s little doubt, though, that the 26-year-old would address a need for Arsenal, having averaged 3.4 dribbles per game in the Premier League in 2018/19 and enjoyed his best goalscoring campaign in red and blue, with 10 goals to his name.

Leeds fans excited about Alfie McCalmont

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans are expecting big things from young midfielder Alfie McCalmont after he posted an image on Twitter of him in training.

McCalmont is a young midfield player who could very easily play a part in Bielsa’s side next term.

The teenager returned to training this week for pre-season, and some fans have been talking up his abilities.

The 19-year-old is yet to make a single senior appearance for the Whites, but his impressive performances for the U23 squad has led to a number of supporters clamouring for him to get a chance.

The Northern Irishman has been rated as one of Leeds’ brightest young talents, and he has been capped at under-19 level for Northern Ireland.

His performances for the U23s caught the eye of many supporters as he showed his talents, with goals such as the one against Millwall showing exactly what the youngster is capable of.

One supporter compared him to England international Jack Wilshere, while another stated he could be a replacement for Kalvin Phillips if he left for Aston Villa.

Leeds must give Kalvin Phillips whatever he wants

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Reports from Football Insider have stated that Kalvin Phillips has rejected Leeds’ contract offer as it is a long way off what he is expecting.

The 23-year-old was one of the most important players for Marcelo Bielsa’s side last season, but his performances on the pitch aren’t the only reason Leeds need to keep him.

What’s the story?

It was reported towards the end of last week that the Whites were readying a new contract for their star man, but now it seems that it has been rejected.

Of course, Phillips is one of Leeds’ best players. He earned himself a spot in the EFL’s Team of the Season, and he has gained admiration from a number of Premier League clubs including Aston Villa and Bournemouth.

Fans would be fuming

There is a real possibility that the midfielder will join Dean Smith’s side this summer, but Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani can’t afford to let that happen.

Leeds have already sold Pontus Jansson this summer, and there are also reports that Kemar Roofe could be on his way out. The confirmed exit and the rumoured exit have infuriated the fanbase, and taking a look at the supporters’ reactions when Phillips was linked with a move away shows that news of his sale would bring about a similar meltdown.

The Elland Road faithful are amongst the most loyal and supportive fans in the entire country, but if they lose Phillips you could completely understand if they turned on Radrizzani and his right-hand man.

Indeed, Leeds must throw whatever they can at Phillips to try and persuade him to stay at the club this summer, or else the men in charge face serious backlash from the fanbase if they sell yet another key player.

Bobo Balde tells Christopher Jullien to feed off Celtic fans’ passion to be a Hoops success

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Celtic favourite Bobo Balde has given advice to defender Christopher Jullien after his switch from Toulouse to Celtic this summer, as reported by The Sunday Post.

What’s he said?

Balde once made the move from Toulouse to the Hoops back in 2001, so knows a bit about adjusting to defensive life in Glasgow from Ligue 1.

Winning ten trophies with the club, Balde established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Scotland and he’s passed on some of his knowledge to Jullien, offering to have a direct chat with him in the future.

Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

As quoted by The Sunday Post, the 43-year-old said:

“He is very tall and has a wonderful physique. I don’t think strikers are going to enjoy playing against him. But he also has elegance and is very comfortable with the ball when he is possession.

“I have not spoken to Christopher about the move, but I would gladly do so if he wants to have a nice conversation.

“I would simply tell him to enjoy the moment of being with a massive football club such as Celtic. Enjoy the wonderful supporters and cherish the feelings they give you.

“There is nothing more enjoyable than hearing almost 60,000 Celtic supporters singing your name, and them believing in your ability to help the team.

“The way to do that is to give 100% in every game. That must always be the starting point, the absolute minimum, for any Celtic player. Once you are familiar with your surroundings and your team-mates, then the natural ability starts to flow.”

Adoring support

With Celtic again selling out their season tickets for 2019/20, Jullien is assured to be playing in front of tens of thousands of fans every second week at Celtic Park, with expectations high that the team can deliver their ninth consecutive league title.

The Hoops defence was a major priority heading into the summer after the departures of Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic, so the arrival of Jullien could make a big difference to the fortunes of Neil Lennon’s side.

As Balde points out, the fans adore commitment from players, so it’s important that Jullien attacks the position with confidence from the off.

The first target this coming season is qualifying for the UEFA Champions League group stages, and if the centre-back can help deliver that he’ll be well on his way to being an established first-teamer.

Arsenal legacy for Kroenke can be rescued with big-spending summer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

“Arsenal is at a crossroads. Things need to change.” The damning statement levelled at the north London’s side owner from 16 supporter groups and bloggers. A signed letter calling on Stan Kroenke to “reinvigorate” the Premier League club and bring it back to where it belongs.

After a disappointing end to the season saw them miss out on Champions League football for the third season in a row, the Gunners have had a rather underwhelming summer. Brazilian teenager Gabriel Martinelli remains the club’s only signing of the window and it has become a source of parody that the club with the billionaire owner have a reported £40m budget to spend. Or half a Wilfried Zaha, in other words.

Check out 5 reasons why Arsenal need Wilfried Zaha in the video below…

But as tensions rise off the pitch – captain Laurent Koscielny’s farcical situation adding further fuel to the fire – there remains a hope that Kroenke can salvage something amongst all the mess.

Reports in recent weeks have claimed that the Gunners’ head honchos Unai Emery, Raul Sanllehi, Vinai Venkatesham and Edu will all be involved in the pre-season tour of the USA, and will make use of the opportunity to speak to Kroenke about potentially investing some of his own money into the club.

The north London side have seen bids for Kieran Tierney and William Saliba stall in recent days amidst claims that the “structure” of payment in both deals was not quite up to scratch. Deals for the duo would comfortably take up most of the budget and leave little room for Emery to strengthen other areas of the squad.

So as the club embark on a whirlwind trip around the States, the next couple of weeks seem pivotal. If the Gunners hierarchy can convince Kroenke to finally step in and give the club a much-needed cash injection, then the sense of optimism both amongst the fans and the backroom staff will be rediscovered. Failure to do so will see this festering situation become almost untenable and have potentially devastating results on the pitch.

‘Silent Stan’s’ legacy at the club is in tatters; but it still may not have reached the point of no return. If he heeds the advice of all those calling on him to “care”, then the American may still be able to drag Arsenal out from their slumber. But at the moment, that still remains a massive ‘if’.

Spurs fans thrilled with Paulo Dybala links

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left excited by links with Juventus superstar Paulo Dybala.

Tuttosport, via journalist Tancredi Palmer, claims that Spurs have enquired about the possibility of acquiring the Argentina international.

It remains to be seen if such a deal could be done, with rival publication Calciomercato claiming that Spurs have opted against making a bid.

Nevertheless, fans are excited at the prospect of Dybala moving to north London.

Spurs have already signed Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon this summer for a club-record fee and have also been linked with Real Betis playmaker Giovani Lo Celso.

A deal for Dybala would be something of a surprise; he has made 182 appearances for Juve, scoring 78 goals and registering 30 assists. He has also won 23 caps for Argentina.

And fans are going gaga at the idea of the 25-year-old linking up with Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

West Ham fans are delighted as Pablo Fornals opens account

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United continued their preparations for the 2019-20 campaign with a 5-3 win over Hertha Berlin on Wednesday.

It proved to be a special occasion for Pablo Fornals and Sebastien Haller as the summer arrivals both netted their first goals for the Hammers.

Indeed, Fornals sent Manuel Pellegrini’s side on their way in the 11th minute, before Haller struck the team’s third of the afternoon 20 minutes from time.

West Ham landed Fornals from Villarreal last month, with the Spain Under-21 star moving to the club on a five-year contract.

And after watching him score on his second appearance for the club, a number of West Ham fans took to social media to lavish praise on the midfielder.

Rangers’ winger dilemma could make or break their season

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Having brought four new wingers to the club this summer, Steven Gerrard faces a mightily tough task figuring out who should lead his new-look attack this season.

On the chalkboard

Gerrard has signed Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie and Greg Stewart to compete with Scott Arfield and the returning Jamie Murphy for his two wide berths.

Playing a 4-3-3 for the majority of last season, the roles of the two wingers are vital for Rangers, as they’re tasked with supporting the lone striker, predominantly Alfredo Morelos, as well as chipping in with the odd goal themselves.

Ryan Kent played the role of wide-man at Ibrox expertly last season, particularly in the final few months of the campaign. His six goals and nine assists were important in his 43 outings and he formed a nice relationship with Morelos, often drifting inside to support his forward partner.

Yet, Kent’s return looks unlikely, so that leaves the current crop to fight it out for the chance to become Gerrard’s new favourite.

Who will step up?

The one player who, so far, looks to be forcing the issue is Ojo. The Liverpool loanee has impressed as a right-winger in the early stages of this season and looks to be establishing himself in the role. His direct running style and penchant for striking at goal are some of the qualities possessed by Kent and he looks to have one of the roles nailed down already.

With the right-hand side being the 22-year-old’s to lose, that leaves the rest to battle it out on the left. One who did well in this role last season was Arfield, who brought goals to the position – he scored three times in his three starts on the left flank.

The Canadian could be pivotal this season, with his tactical flexibility opening the door for a change of shape under Gerrard. His ability to play deeper in the midfield might count against him though, as the Rangers boss is still trying to figure out who his preferred options are in that area too.

Looking at the other contenders it could well be Jones who steps up alongside Ojo given his use so far this season in the role. Yet, in Stewart, Hastie and Murphy, you have three players who would be ready to take their chance should they be afforded one.

It could be a while until we see who comes out on top, but Gerrard would be wise to decide quickly on his first-choice for that left flank. Letting the season get four or five games in without a settled front three could see crucial points dropped in the charge to topple Celtic.

With the Gers expecting to close the gap on their rivals this season, a few missed points here or there could effectively decide the fate of the domestic campaign.

Manchester City have missed a trick not signing Dani Alves

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

As confirmed on the club’s official website, reported Manchester City target Dani Alves has joined Brazilian side Sao Paulo on a free transfer.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks had suggested that Alves could be on his way to the Etihad this summer following his release from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.

[ad_pod ]

However, amidst reports linking Pep Guardiola’s side with a possible move for Juventus right-back Joao Cancelo, it has now been confirmed Alves has returned to his native Brazil.

Missed a trick

If City can pull off a big-money deal for Cancelo, then there can be no doubting that they will have got themselves a quality full-back. But seemingly skipping on a free transfer like Alves certainly feels like Guardiola’s side may have missed a trick.

The Brazil international showed at the Copa America that he still has what it takes to operate at the highest level, and was voted the player of the tournament following his country’s triumph.

His past experience working under Guardiola at Barcelona would have given him an added edge and head-start into trying to adjust to the Spaniard’s philosophies at City.

Watch Manchester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Indeed, at 36, Alves would have provided able back-up to first-choice right-back Kyle Walker, and given them a wealth of experience from his time playing in the closing stages of the Champions League – a competition City have failed to conquer in recent years.

Signing Alves on a free would have been an astute piece of transfer business by the Citizens, and it may be something that they look back on come the end of the season with a tinge of regret.
